Police seek tips about Oregon Coast cold cases
Dec. 2, 2018
"To the police and prosecutors who tracked him, Ackroyd is a confirmed serial killer.

But how many others might Ackroyd have found and harmed along his route?

Authorities point to the remains or clothes of five other people found in the 1970s in the isolated wilderness not far from Highway 20 — and all in Linn County, where Ackroyd grew up.

1976: The skull of one unidentified woman was found a mile off Highway 20, on Swamp Mountain.

1977: The remains of Elizabeth Mussler, 22, of Lebanon, were discovered in a shallow grave in the Thistle Creek area of Green Peter Reservoir.

1977: Friends Karen Lee, 15, and Rodney Grissom, 14, made their final phone call from Lebanon. Their bodies were never found, but Karen’s jeans, pages of her journal and the blouse she had sewn for a school project were found off a logging road in the Upper Soda Fork area of Linn County. Five years later, some of Grissom’s clothing and possessions were found not far from where Lee’s things had been located.

1978: The skull of another unidentified woman was found by a logging crew in the woods a quarter-mile south of the highway near Snow Creek.

No evidence linked Ackroyd to any of these other deaths, but the cases remain open. Their timing and proximity to Highway 20 prompted investigators to wonder if the mechanic had a hand in them.

If you have information about Ackroyd or the disappearances, call the Linn County Sheriff’s Office tip line at 866-557-9988."

This is really interesting. I don't think any of these could of been Neal Falls though. He would of been a little kid in the 1970s

Here are a few cold cases that might be worth checking into. Most are very unlikely; based on the timeline you guys have pieced together, I'm guessing that he started killing in Oregon in the '90s and didn't head to other states until about 2000, which rules out a lot of these, but if it was iffy I included it.

Kentucky
Jessica Wallace, remains found in March 2003 - http://www.kentuckystatepolice.org/cold_case/post15coldcase9.html
They don't give very much information, but since Falls was in and out of the area when she vanished I included her.

Michelle Collins, last seen July 2004 - http://www.kentuckystatepolice.org/cold_case/post11coldcase3.html
This one is possible but unlikely, especially since she's never been found.

Greta Henson, murdered in January 1992 - http://www.kentuckystatepolice.org/cold_case/post10coldcase2.html
This one's unlikely because of the timeframe, but she was strangled and shot in her home.

Indiana
Amanda Lee Vanscyoc, murdered November 2001 - ISP: Amanda Lee Vanscyoc 11/13/2001
Found nude and strangled near the Ohio River near Evansville.

Oregon
Angela Kreuger, murdered May 1996 - ANGELA KRUEGER | Unsolved Cold Cases | The City of Portland, Oregon
They're a little tight-lipped on the cause of death ("trauma"), but she was an escort.

Cassie Stevens, murdered July 1998 - CASSIE STEVENS | Unsolved Cold Cases | The City of Portland, Oregon
Shot and killed; a drug user from Seattle who "needed to support her habit."

Linda Woods, murdered April 1992 - LINDA WOODS | Unsolved Cold Cases | The City of Portland, Oregon
Another unlikely one, but she was strangled.

Veronica James, found murdered in January 1999 - VERONICA JAMES | Unsolved Cold Cases | The City of Portland, Oregon
Drug user and occasional sex worker. They don't say it but she was found in a canvas bag so she may have been dismembered. Died due to blunt force trauma.

Sarah Yarborough, murdered December 1992 - http://www.kval.com/news/local/137105653.html
Check out the sketch on this one. Give Falls some terrible 90s hair and he could definitely be an aged version of the sketch. They have DNA, so if it was him they'll connect it.

Sharon Hiller, murdered November 1992 - http://www.kval.com/news/local/Who-killed-Susan-Marie-Hiller-139304508.html
Exotic dancer found strangled in a river.

Also, I really think Oregon police should take a look at these cases: http://www.kval.com/news/local/41372312.html
If he began killing in the early to mid-90s, these might have been some of his first victims, and he may not have escalated to dismembering bodies yet. The only ones that seem out of the realm of possibility are the the two 1980s cases. But one of them seems unconnected to the others; it's farther north, and it sounds like police had ideas but no evidence on the suspects there. The other could be coincidence, or could have been his inspiration.

And on an unrelated side note, there were a truly disturbing number of young African-American women being strangled, stabbed or both in Portland in the 1980s and early 1990s.

Does anyone have an updated link for the cases Oregon should be looking into? The very last link is broken. :( I
watched The killing season and have had a wondering thought of serial killers using the interstates and highways because I've always lived a hop, skip and jump away from either i5, i205 and hwy 97 in Oregon. After watching and listening to some terrifying stories, I'm lucky I didn't get snatched up as a kid.

Sometimes kills along highways indicate a job like truck driving

Have they looked into Texas much? There was a guy going by "The Marine" and various other sudo names on Eccie.com. He fits the general description. Was known for non-payment and turning violent. There were many alerts out on him.

I have a feeling LE has put this on the back burner, since the killer is dead there is nothing to worry about. I guess its up to us to figure it out.

I never heard of The Marine.. interesting if it was him.

This is an interesting one and Neal def worth keeping in the old reference cabinet.. That said i'm not sure he was a killer yet.. Seems to me someone that was smart and had done this before would have left most of those items he found with at a secondary location. All he really needed on his person was a handful of zipties and that seems more logical if he had been someone who had done this before

Falls' former addresses according to a background check. Obviously you need to keep in mind these records are not always 100 percent accurate:

Henderson, Nevada (May 2005-?)
Albany, Oregon (1998 - ?)
Lebanon, Oregon (1996-1999) Hunting/fishing licenses issued there in 1997 and 1998.
Klamath Falls, Oregon (1990-1992)
Butler, Indiana (Gun permit issued Dec. 2001. Expired in 2005)
Eugene, Oregon (Verizon cellphone registered to a po box)
Veneta, Oregon (T-Mobile cellphone registered to a po box)
Coos Bay, Oregon (1990s)
Springfield, Oregon (last known address)

I have wondered if Neal Falls could be the West Mesa Bone Collector. Satellite images indicate the last victim was buried in 2005.

I have also (in addition to the West Mesa Bone Collector) wondered if Neal could have been in the area for the Jefferson Parrish 8.

When I heard the story of the Jefferson Parrish 8, I thought I was hearing the Chillicothe story again. It actually took me a while to find the Jefferson Parrish 8 as I had heard it from one of the umpteen true crime channels I listen to.

The Jefferson Parrish 8 happened between 2005-2009. I am not sure where Neal was during that time, and I have some serious doubts about him staying there for 4 years. There was also a very likely suspect who was tied to each woman who went missing and/or died.

I don't think Neal is a likely suspect by any means, but the stories as so similar to me, and this felt like a good time to mention it.

How many victims did Neal Falls have and has he been linked to the Long Island serial murders

I realize I am replying to myself, but now that I review this, there was an extremely similar murderer that went into detail about why he chose the women he chose.

William Devin Howell was a Connecticut serial killer (who may have also been responsible for a separate set of murders in that area) like Falls, killed many sex workers, most of which were habitual drug users. His story sounded a lot like Neal Falls’s Chillicothe killings and the Jefferson Perish 8. It’s eerie to listen to the stories and hear how incredibly similar they are.

What makes this interesting to me, is that Howell had a collecting place for his victims (much like West Mesa bone collector). But may have also went on a tirade of killing and leaving the victims on the side of the road off Route 8.

Does anyone know if hes been ruled out in any of the Vegas murders?
I have not heard anything for or against it.

Wild to think that him and LISK may have been operating in the same area at the same time.

There is a couple of murders I suspect Falls may have committed. I think he is a great suspect for the I-70 killer. The West Mesa Bone collector was not too far from him at the time that happened, but logistically seems a little unrealistic.

There is one jerk who walked barefoot into a gas station and proceeded to shoot the clerk. He is captured on CCTV and never identified. This happened in 1997, in Nebraska, and reminded me quite a bit of the I-70 shootings. The description of the man sounds too large to be Falls, and the CCTV photos are not that convincing.
