The grant will help the organization enhance the quality and quantity of services available to assist victims of human trafficking.

"The exploitation of women, men, and children for profit is a severe violation of human rights," Lowey said. "I am pleased My Sisters' Place will use these federal dollars to continue their robust assistance for those who have been forced or coerced into unwanted labor, sexual, or other service situations. We must do everything in our power to identify and combat human trafficking, and I will continue fighting to secure resources that protect our region from these atrocities while supporting survivors in our communities."

This grant will enable My Sisters' Place to assist more trafficking victims in and around Westchester County with comprehensive, timely services to recover and restore stability in their lives. This includes providing specialized education and skills-building professional development to service providers, law enforcement officials and faith-based organizations to improve their ability to identify, assess, investigate, and refer or provide services to human trafficking victims; increasing the number of collaborative partners who provide critical services to human trafficking victims in Westchester; and developing an evaluation plan that will assist the organization and partner agencies to improve service delivery and outreach efforts.

“A young woman came to the emergency room at Jackson Hospital, stating she had a tracking device in her. X-rays revealed that the woman did indeed have a tracking device imbedded under her skin, typically used to track animals. This led to the creation of the T.H. R. I. V.E. Clinic at Jackson Hospital, developed and designed with special procedures for the care of those escaping human trafficking.

“5. 1 in 7 reported runways in the U.S. in 2018 is likely a victim of child sex trafficking

In the U.S., sex trafficking victims include immigrants as well as American citizens. Though there is no official number, advocates and researchers say the number of domestic victims is high.

According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, 1 in 7 of the more than 23,500 runaways reported to the nonprofit organization were likely victims of child sex trafficking.

6. Girls in foster care are particularly vulnerable

In recent years, a pipeline from the foster care system to trafficking has gained attention.

A report from the Human Rights Project for Girls, Georgetown Law Center on Poverty and Inequality and Ms. Foundation for Women supports that finding. Titled “The Sexual Abuse to Prison Pipeline,”the report found that girls who grow up in the instability of the child welfare system, particularly those placed in multiple homes, are “vulnerable to the manipulation of traffickers who promise to love and care for them. Indeed, some traffickers purposely troll for youth in certain group homes because they are aware of this vulnerability.”

Human and Labor Trafficking the Topic of Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and Federal Bureau of Investigation Annual Conference — FBI

The Homewood initiative took place July 11 with the department’s Vice and Narcotics Unit. Sgt. John Carr said multiple arrests were made at hotels on Lakeshore Parkway and Oxmoor Road. Nine women were arrested and five men. Authorities said the men were “Johns” or pimps. An Alabama law passed in 2016 prohibits media outlets from publishing the mugshots of anyone charged with prostitution without special permission from a judge therefore the mugshots of the females were not released.

31 charged in GTA, Quebec following human trafficking, organized crime investigation
October 16, 2019
"Hundreds of charges have been laid following a year-long investigation that York Regional Police said led the dismantling of a human trafficking and organized crime ring spanning across the Greater Toronto Area and Quebec.

The investigation dubbed “Project Convalesce,” was launched in October 2018 after police said two female victims of human trafficking contacted police for help.

Police said the women were at a hotel in Vaughan and were attempting to hide from the “kingpin” of a human trafficking ring, identified by police as Jonathan Nyangwila."

"Over the past year, police said they were able to identify 45 different women involved in human trafficking that were associated with the group of suspects.

Many of the women, Truong said, originated from the Quebec area but were brought to Ontario.

“We have seen the horrific things that are happening to these women. They are controlled in every way imaginable,” he said.

“I can tell you that they are controlled emotionally, they are controlled through violence, through threats of violence. They are controlled through drugs and alcohol.”

Jason Pope: Authorities File Six New Charges Against DJ Accused of Trafficking Underage Black Girls, Prostituting Them

Jason Pope, the South Carolina DJ at the center of an extensive human trafficking case, is facing several new charges related to his alleged crimes.

Pope, 42, was hit with six new charges including an additional four counts of criminal sexual conduct with a minor (aged 11 to 14) and two counts of trafficking in persons, Florence County Detention Center booking records show.

[...]

According to arrest warrants, Pope allegedly recruited an underage girl through social media explicitly for commercial sex acts back in July. He confined the victim to a room at a home in Darlington, investigators said, and compelled her to perform sex acts “with intent to extort and threaten the victim” to continue having sex with him for money and other items of value.

Pope has had over a dozen prior run-ins with the law, some of which date back to December 2011. One of the earliest allegations against the DJ came that year when a 13-year-old girl told police she had unprotected sex with Pope and later claimed she learned he had the HIV/AIDS virus.

The girl, who was introduced to the party promoter by a friend, said Pope gave her drugs and alcohol so she would have sex with him, according to police documents obtained by local station WBMF.

[...]

According to a Facebook screenshot, the DJ reportedly once bragged that “I’m 36 with 693 BODIES (All Black females), WBU?”

Authorities believe there could be several other victims out there and are seeking the public’s help in locating those who might be connected to the human trafficking case in Florence. They’re urging anyone with additional information to contact the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) at 866-472-8477.

Pope remains held at the Florence County Detention Center on no bond.

Top U.S. hotels sued for 'industry-wide failures' to prevent sex trafficking
December 9, 2019
"NEW YORK, Dec 9 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) — Landmark U.S. legal action was filed on Monday accusing several major hotel groups of profiting from sex trafficking on behalf of 13 women who claimed they were sold for sex in hotel rooms.

Twelve hotel chains were named and accused of knowing and ignoring warning signs that women and children were sold as sex slaves on their premises, according to the filing, a consolidation of 13 existing cases, in U.S. federal court in Columbus, Ohio."

"Among those named in the 13 cases were Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc., Red Roof Inn, Intercontinental Hotels & Resorts, Best Western Hotels & Resorts and Wyndham Hotels and Resorts Inc".

"An estimated 400,000 people are believed trapped in modern slavery in the United States, from forced labor to sex trafficking, according to the Global Slavery Index, published by the human rights group Walk Free Foundation".

“The entire barrel has a problem … For years the hospitality industry has known that sex trafficking and especially child sex trafficking has occurred on their properties and yet it continues to happen.”

"Several hotel chains have launched initiatives in recent years to tackle trafficking, such as training staff to identify potential victims and raising awareness of the crime among guests."

New ad campaign on Queen Street shines spotlight on sex trafficking in Canada
A storefront along a popular stretch of Queen Street is hosting a unique new advertising campaign aimed at raising awareness about a topic advocates say does not receive enough attention— the dangers of sex trafficking in Canada.

Covenant House, a Toronto-based agency that provides services to at-risk youth, is behind the ‘Shoppable Girls’ campaign, which features live models on display in a storefront on the street, which is known to be a hotspot for Toronto shoppers.

The girls are advertised as “The Amara,” “The Michaela,” “The Samantha,” “The Ellie,” and “The Maya,” and a large sign with bold lettering appears alongside the models.

“To sex traffickers, girls are just products. Unsuspecting girls are being lured into the sex industry and forced to sell their bodies for someone else’s profit. It’s called sex trafficking, and it’s happening here at home,” the signs reads.''
image.jpg

''Text at the bottom of the sign directs people to the campaign’s website, shoppablegirls.com, to learn about the warning signs.

On the campaign’s website, Covenant House highlights a number of notable facts about sex trafficking, including the statistic that 90 per cent of victims are females.

Covenant House says victims are as young as 13 years old when they are first recruited and sex trafficking victims are found at malls, parties, bus stations, and online.

The campaign also points out common myths associated with sex trafficking, including the belief that traffickers are typically strangers and that only lower income youth become victims.''

''According to Toronto police, sex trafficking in Canada is a billion-dollar industry and can be more lucrative than the smuggling of drugs or illegal firearms.''

U.S. Marshals find 39 missing children during operation in Georgia

"ATLANTA (KMPH) —Dozens of missing children have been found in Georgia following a two week rescue operation by the United States Marshals Service (USMS).

U.S. Marshals describe these missing children cases as some of the most " at-risk and challenging recovery cases" in the area.

Authorities say this is because of high-risk factors such as victimization of child sex trafficking, child exploitation, sexual abuse, physical abuse, and medical or mental health conditions."
