Some people (speaking for myself) sadly rely on the Maps App in new places, and the direction of the map is not necessarily the same way you are facing. It can feel tricky if your mind works differently. Maybe his map was turned around compared to the direction he started walking. This is exactly what I suspect happened in another very similar case.

I don't believe any blame should be placed on his friends. They didn't allow him to drive a vehicle or anything, and as far as they knew, he was in an area with plenty of other people around, between the bar and hotel. This was not foreseeable.
I agree that his friends had no reason to believe that anything of this magnitude would happen. I suppose that holds for the bar staff as well.

It seems Riley was unable to find his hotel, because that would have been safer and more comfortable and convenient than going to the homeless camp or staggering along the river.

About the the tab- I go out 2-3 time a month. In the summer more than that. I hardly ever close my tabs. I give the bartender my card, they run it and give it back. Most of the time I just leave. They add a 15% tip and that’s that.

ETA- my tab stays open throughout the night. I don’t drink just one lol.

Regarding Ubers and kicked out customers being sent home in one. It's nice in theory, but realistically there are logistics about knowing the destination, using the app then charging the person's card (?), keeping track of the patron, getting them in the car, etc. The biggest barrier I see is that Uber (and taxi) drivers don't want extremely drunk customers in their cars. Especially ones who are not there volitionally. There's unpredictability, potential belligerence, vandalism, vomiting, passing out, and plain old not wanting to go to the ordered destination.

Yes, those are valid points, which I agree are all likely and valid reasons why bars haven’t implemented an Uber policy for expelled patrons.

I guess in this case it would have been up to his friends to arrange this, but they were also young and drunk and surely unaware of the direction things would take. Hindsight is 20/20.

Luke's 32 Bridge was the third bar Riley visited. Still unknown whether there was any drinking prior to heading out to the bars... MOO

“When they left Tempo, the went down to, I believe, Miranda Lambert’s bar first, spent probably about an hour or and 15 minutes or so, maybe a little longer, there,” Chris Whiteid said.

This was around 7:30 to 8 p.m., according to the Whiteids. Chris said the group then went to Garth Brooks’ bar, and he called his mom.

“He Facetimed me,” she said.

After the Facetime, Ryan Gilbert, Strain’s father, said the boys went to Luke’s 32 Bridge, Luke Bryan’s bar.

Aside from abduction or deciding to start a new life, the only plausible explanation I can think of for him still being alive is perhaps he is concussed and has amnesia. Even then, I don't know how he would survive this many days without someone assisting him.

Sadly, I think he's deceased. Would love to be wrong, though.
When I saw him stumbling past construction sites, I wondered if perhaps he had decided to enter and get out of sight to lie down for awhile. But the crews would have discovered him by now.

This is such a sad story. Seeing him stumble, fall....

Bars can be more responsible, I mean anyone anywhere everyone everywhere can always do better, but bars can't really police people's decisions.

We need to do better with education. Buddy system. We got there with designated drivers. We need designated get-homers.

21 year olds policing themselves. Nobody left behind.

Called. His. Mom.

Oh, my heart.

Good son.

Good stories shouldn't end this way.

Up until this point we had only heard one side of the story. This idea that his friends were barred from leaving never made any sense.
The only way that would make sense is IF the staff selected a mark flashing too much money, tossed him from the bar (all alone without backup), and sent him along to be mugged. Now, surely that would become very obvious, very soon as reports would quickly cluster around that establishment.

Doesn't that read like something out of 18th century London and Paris?
I think they were "barred from leaving" until they paid their bill
And they weren't thinking well enough themselves for anyone to say to at least one friend, "I'll get yours. You go on with Riley." But they were drinking too, so thinking and moving slowly.

It looks like he's on the phone in the 1st picture.

I’ve been assuming they viewed him as too inebriated. I didn’t think he actually did anything, but maybe I’m wrong.
I guess i wonder what that means in such a large rowdy bar. Because if he were falling down like he is in the video--you'd think a friend would leave with him. But if an altercation happened then that might impact either his mindset or his overall safety.
