On Saturday, December 17th, 2011, at approximately 1:38PM, the Palm Springs Police Department received a call of possible skeletal remains found by a hiker, on a hill in the western of South Palm Springs. Officers responded to the location and contacted the hiker. The hiker led officers to a hillside area between Avenida Moraga and Camino Monte, approximately 1300 feet west of the 2100 block of South Palm Canyon Drive. Officers observed the skeletal remains and determined that they were human bones. Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner personnel also responded to the location to assist in the investigation. The investigation at the location was suspended due to darkness and weather conditions.
On Sunday, December 18th, 2011, at approximately 8:15 AM, PSPD and Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner personnel resumed the investigation at the location. Several human bones were recovered and they are all believed to be related to one human body. The name, age, and sex of the decedent have yet to be determined pending investigation. A cause and date of death have not been determined and it is unknown if this is related to any type of crime. It is estimated that the bones have been at the location for at least three years.
Palm Springs Police Department Detective Personnel are investigating all past reports of outstanding missing persons in the area in an effort to identify the decedent. Anybody with information on missing persons who were known to hike in the area or were last seen in the area during the past 15 years are urged to contact Detective Simon Min at 760-323-8142.
