I remember a very similar case of a young lady disappearing from a popular park seemingly without a trace. Her thread was buzzing with theories. She was found in the general area months later, and sadly, she had taken her own life.
I am not insinuating that this is the case with Noemi, however...

I am late to this case, so this might be a completely useless comment, but Astoria is in Queens. Queens is a borough, and Astoria is a neighborhood within that borough.
I used to live in Maspeth, Queens, a couple neighborhoods away from Astoria where one of my closest friends still resides.

Not to mention that eyewitness reports are notoriously unreliable, in general, and it's doubly so when it comes to faces (something that takes the brain a great deal of work to dissect and, therefore, recall correctly).

I don't know the answer to how successful her rehabilitation might be, but I tend to agree with you that the chances of success are probably low.
In the HBO documentary, she actually does say that her mother had taught her to lie really well. Which I assume she means she needed to do...
