We can't know what was going on 'behind the scenes' but I'd guess that the information about the nature of her vulnerabilities were being spread as gossip, and the decision was made that it was better to do it this way, rather than have it revealed by the press.

This new information seems to make it more likely both that she might have entered the river in some way, and that she might have gone off somewhere.

When I was watching I took that to be a rather pedantic statement implying that she had been in the river and may now be in the sea, rather than got out of the river some other way.
