A man between the ages of 25 and 45 with a height between 5 feet 11 inches and 6 feet 5 inches was buried in a shallow grave along the Eel River near Piercy, according to the anthropologists who examined the remains. Detectives believe the man was the victim of a homicide, but no cause of death has been identified.
The remains were found in a shallow grave along a small shelf by the Eel River near the 83000 block of Highway 271 on October 30.
The unidentified Humboldt County family that discovered the grave has kayaked on the Eel River in the area for years. A few years ago, they spotted the tip of a white men's athletic shoe poking out of the ground a few yards above the normal river level. For years they believed it was debris washed up on the river's shore.
At the end of October, during a kayaking and mushroom hunting excursion, they noticed the tip of a second shoe poking up suspiciously next to the first one.
