Johnathan Lee Hamilton left his family home in Houston in his father’s gray GMC Envoy to grab a bottle of Coke and a cup of Starbucks coffee for his sister. The handsome six-foot, two-inch young man took the family’s German shepherd, Shadow, with him for the ride, which was unusual. He went back home just to leave the pet and deliver the beverages, like a final offering to his family, and gunned his father’s SUV as far as he could away from the city.

It was May 2, 2015, three weeks before Johnathan’s 27th birthday, and the last time his family saw him.

Johnathan had just finished a course in welding. He was spotted two days later 134 miles away at a garage parking in Bastrop, near Austin. His parents begged the local police to detain Johnathan until the family could pick him up for the sake of his safety, as he was diagnosed with type one diabetes and bipolar disorder. They were told that, since the young man “hasn’t done anything wrong, they couldn’t take him.” By the time they arrived, he was gone.

I would like to encourage each of you to listen to The Vanished podcast on this case. It is excellent and goes into great detail about Johnathan, his disappearance, and very bizarre details of the last night he was seen. Also check out the active Facebook page. There have been many tips over the years that have spotted him all over the nation.
If you are local to the Bastrop area, the Vanished episode will be of particular interest as it is very specific about where his car broke down, and where he was spotted.

Found deceased.

"The Bastrop Sherriff’s Department confirmed today that human remains discovered in the Colorado River, Bastrop County on Sunday, July 27, 2019, are those of our son, Johnathan Lee Hamilton, who was 26 when we reported him missing last April 2015."

Authorities say a jawbone found last month near the Central Texas city of Bastrop belongs to a Houston man who had been reported missing more than four years ago.

Bastrop Police Chief James Altgelt says officers found Hamilton but couldn't legally detain him because he didn't appear to be a danger to himself. Hamilton's family filed another missing person report but were not able to find him again.

Authorities continue investigating the cause of Hamilton's death

Mother of man whose jaw bone was found in the Colorado River still searching for answers

According to the Bastrop County Sheriff's Office, the investigation into how Hamilton died is ongoing.

"The last that was heard from my son was he was at our home on May the 2nd, 2015," said Angela Hamilton, Johnathan's mother. “That day that he left, his dad and him and his little sister had plans to go bowling. There was no argument, there was no fussing.”

When Johnathan was nowhere to be found, Angela reported him missing. She said there's little explanation for why Johnathan could have left but she said he left in his father's vehicle.

Bastrop County Sheriff Maurice Cook said Bastrop police encountered Johnathan in 2015 after he was reported missing.

According to our partners at the Statesman, the Bastrop police received a call reporting a suspicious person at the Burleson Crossing Shopping Center.

Sheriff Cook told KVUE that police determined Johnathan was not in danger.

"And they notified the Houston Police Department and the family," Sheriff Cook said.

He also said because they didn't have the legal authority to hold him, police let him go.

Johnathan's family said they drove to Bastrop and found the car he drove in the Best Buy parking lot.

"Out of gas, with a dead battery ... and there was no Johnathan," Angela said.
