IL IL - Helen Green, 12, Chicago, 1971

My best friend went missing when we were 12 years old. That was back in 1963 and it was taken very, very seriously. Groups were formed to look for her. It was during the summer and we were both to turn 13 that year. My birthday is in July and hers was in August. Now if she were to be 15 years old, I agree that she would most likely have been thought of as a runaway teen. Believe me, we were just kids. My best friend was eventually found. She had drown.

In my adult life, I went to work for the very same Sheriff's Office that had handled her case. A missing person's report was done and LE vowed to look for her as long as it took. I disagree with you as to how you say it was back then (at least here) because I lived through that time frame.

MOO

I shouldn't have made my comment sound nearly as universal as I did -- but it certainly doesn't surprise me that there's no missing persons report for someone who is known to have run away at that time. I'm sorry about your friend -- and yes, somebody who might have been injured, hurt, or taken would have been searched for. I was only talking about kids who were known to have run away.

Helen is resonating with me. I grew up in Chicago. . And was born in '58. She could have been a classmate of mine. (But wasn't). I remember threatening to run away at about 12. My Dad sat me down and calmly talked to me about the horrible things that could happen. . Not TOO graphically. . Leaving out sexual junk.. but it was graphic enough that I don't think I ever considered it again. Of course in Helen's case it sounds like it was the only option she felt sh e had. I hope her brother decides what's best for him and her in the search.

NCMEC held Helen's NamUs profile up; but it finally went online.

Now the harder part begins. Looking through all the Jane Doe's and deciding if any of them could be Helen Marie. Her family seems fairly certain that she would have headed towards New York. They say she was seen a few times around the old Cook County Hospital in Chicago after she went missing. I think she could have headed most any direction if she made it out of Illinois. After all the abuse this child endured, I hope she made it and managed to stay alive. I am not sure that is a very realistic thought, as I feel she would have contacted some of her family if that was the case.

I'd like to have a photo of her done with longer hair. We are also still working on getting a photo of her from a better angle. When you look at her, do any of our Jane Doe's come to mind? It's time for this child to make it back home.

I honestly do not think Helen is listed. I feel she will either be found locally or she will be an older JD

If the eye color is correct on this Jane Doe then she isn't Helen. Other than that it looks good. The family tends to be tall. The age is right and from seeing photo's of the family, the looks are possible. I agree.....submit her, there is no harm in trying and worse case she is ruled out.
I do agree with roselvr in that Helen probably survived a few years once she escaped from Chicago. and this Jane Doe falls into that category too.

Not knowing very much about different US states, (big apologies) https://identifyus.org/en/cases/5221 ( NJ - Galloway Twp - WhtFem 668UFNJ, 14-18, Watch w/Wide Leather Band, Dec'71) is definitely worth looking at more. I was there this evening and ended up here. I saw that Stillseekanswers posted her earlier in the thread. Just something about the facial features, even with Carls auburn hair picture reminds me of Helen. Namus has 1/1/1971 as the date Helen was last seen and the UID had been deceased for several months when found. Most of the time, i don't see many resemblances when suggestions are posted so i could be totally off. Just wonder what everyone else thinks. :)
