At least 10 people were killed, two local Turkish officials said, as videos posted on social media showed destroyed buildings in several cities in the southeast of the country.

Broadcasters TRT and Haberturk showed images of people gathered around wrecked buildings in the town of Kahramanmaras, seeking survivors.

“Our priority is to bring out people trapped under ruined buildings and to transfer them to hospitals,” he said.

“Some international help might be necessary,” she said, noting that poor weather conditions were making the situation worse.

There were also reports of damage in northern Syria.

The opposition’s Syrian Civil Defence described the situation in the rebel-held region as “disastrous” adding that entire buildings had collapsed and people were trapped under the rubble.

The quake, one of the strongest to hit the region in more than 100 years of records, struck 23 kilometers (14.2 miles) east of Nurdagi, Gaziantep province at a depth of 24.1 kilometers (14.9 miles), the US Geological Survey said.

Some collapsed buildings housed 100 people. At 4:17 AM local time, the earthquake collapsed several buildings in a 200 miles radius of the epicentre. I'm guessing 3-4000 deaths, although I could be way off. So many collapsed residential buildings in Turkey and Syria.

According to the CNN story linked above, the Turkish government has requested international assistance. Considering that Turkey is a NATO country with substantial services, the situation must be truly catastrophic.

The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) said the quake struck at a depth of 10 km (6 miles), while the EMSC monitoring service said it was assessing the risk of a tsunami.

The tremor lasted about a minute and shattered windows, according to a Reuters witness in Diyarbakir, 350 km (218 miles)to the east, where a security official said at least 17 buildings collapsed.

Authorities said 16 structures collapsed in Sanliurfa and 34 in Osmaniye.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported a series of further earthquakes following the initial tremor, which it put at a magnitude of 7.8. There was a quake measuring 6.7 in Gaziantep and another of 5.6 in the city's Nurdag area.

Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) put the magnitude of the quake at 7.4 near Kahramanmaras and the larger city of Gaziantep, close to the Syrian border.

Tremors were also felt in the Turkish capital of Ankara, 460 km (286 miles) northwest of the epicentre, and in Cyprus, where police reported no damage.

"The earthquake struck in a region that we feared. There is serious widespread damage," Kerem Kinik, the chief of the Turkish Red Crescent relief agency, told Haberturk, issuing an appeal for blood donations.

Turkey is among the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. More than 17,000 people were killed in 1999 when a 7.6-magnitude quake struck Izmit, a city southeast of Istanbul. In 2011, a quake in the eastern city of Van killed more than 500.

According to Syrian State TV, citing the Ministry of Health, the earthquake Monday has killed at least 111 people and injured 516 others in the Syrian regions of Aleppo, Latakia, Hama and Tartus. Live updates: Turkey-Syria earthquake kills nearly 200

Tartus....
Through connections in the art world, I have a friend who lives in Tartus. He is a well known artist as well as a sea captain. Tartus is closer to the border of Lebanon, fairly south of the epicenter.
Now I am worried about him after that news article. I have reached out to him to hopefully learn he and his family are at least safe. Maybe he is out to sea presently, I don't know. But he has a family.

So far no response....understandable of course.

This is terrible.....all those people, so much devastation.
