Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton provided an update on what is known of the situation. The full press conference can be watched at the top of this story.

Singleton said that Vicki White was armed with a 9 millimeter handgun when transporting Casey White. At this time, it is unclear if any other weapons were in the vehicle that the two left in.

Singleton said that Vicki White was taking Casey White to a mental health evaluation. Singleton confirmed that there was not a scheduled mental health evaluation.

Officials provided an update on missing Lauderdale County corrections officer, inmate

From your article above:
"The inmate is a 38-year-old male who is described as 6-foot-9 and 270 pounds."
Must be experiencing a growth spurt.

Yikes, how concerning! I'm sure that this will cause the jail from which he escaped to examine their protocol. Hard to believe that he was allowed to leave without a confirmed MH appointment, and crazy that it took hours to realize that the two were missingo_O:eek:

Well, I'm sure that the deputy transporting him needed paperwork to present when delivering him to the mental health facility for an evaluation. There was probably no such paperwork generated because he didn't have an appointment.

How in the heck did this happen? I can only think that it was an "inside job." (IMO)

Hi. So, I’m local.

One correction: Lauderdale Co is not the county Huntsville is located in. Huntsville is two counties east in Madison Co. In case that helps anyone.

Thought I’d mention an interesting local flavor.
Casey Cole White confessed to the murder of Connie Ridgeway, which was highly publicized from Rogersville, AL by a local former Rogersville police officer turned radio podcaster named Mark White. And then Casey Cole White disappears with Lauderdale officer Vicki White, who it’s stated is not related to Casey White….

So, either VERY interesting coincidence. OR additional possibilities that the third White is linked to one of them, or Casey White THOUGHT Vicki might be connected to Mark.

Maybe my local connection is the only reason I find that interesting…

The office did not provide any additional information about what might have happened, but said investigators "are currently attempting to locate any video that may tell us more about what we're dealing with."

The office said even though they left at 9:30 a.m., no one realized the two were missing until 3:30 p.m. It is not clear how their disappearance went unnoticed for so long.

Vicki White (also spelled 'Vicky') has training in inmate mental health.

In 2016, Vicky was quoted in an AL.com article about a hands-on experiment where she wore an earpiece to understand what it like for inmates with severe mental health issues: "it's hard to concentrate on what you're supposed to be doing," she told the paper.

In 2017, minutes of the Lauderdale County Commission show that she and other members of the Sheriffs Department attended the National Institute of Corrections Inmate Behavior Management conference in Aurora, CO.

(Editor’s note: This story involves a jail employee and inmate from Lauderdale County, Ala., which is the county where Huntsville is located. We stress this to avoid any confusion. Law enforcement has issued an alert to surrounding states.)

North Alabama deputy, inmate missing

Err, Huntsville is the county seat of Madison County Alabama o_O

I think she helped him escape, either voluntarily or under some kind of coercion or extortion:

"Missing Assistant Director of Corrections Vicki White broke protocol when she escorted inmate Casey White from jail this morning to apparently take him to the courthouse in Lauderdale County."

[...]

"Vicki White coordinates all transports from the detention center to court and therefore knew the protocol, the sheriff added. Singleton said that although Casey White was supposedly being transported for a mental health evaluation at the courthouse, they have since learned that no such evaluation or other court hearing for him was scheduled for Friday."

[...]

"When Vicki White escorted Casey White out of the jail, she told the guard she was going to drop him off at the court and then go seek medical attention because she wasn't feeling well."

So she coordinates all the transports and knows two deputies are required. She takes him out of jail alone, against protocol, knowing no appts or court was scheduled for him. She then buys herself some time by telling the guard she would not return immediately.

So either she helped him of her own free will or he coerced her to voluntarily help him under some manner of threat or blackmail or extortion or something.

Either way, I don't think she's safe with this guy whether she is voluntarily with him or not. I'd be watching the Mexican border.

Officials looking for a Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office employee and a murder suspect who went missing in Alabama on Friday are trying to figure out if the employee was taken against her will or if she was assisted in escaping.

Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton, speaking at a news conference Friday evening, said there was no reason for Vicki White to transport the inmate after an investigation.

Authorities said they are still searching and investigating any interaction between the corrections officer and Casey White, as well as any phone calls he had received.

When Vicki White escorted Casey White out of the jail, she told the guard she was going to drop him off at the court and then go seek medical attention because she wasn’t feeling well.

The sheriff said Casey White was never dropped off at court and Vicki White did not make it to the place where she said she was going to seek medical attention.

Vicki White has been with the department for 25 years and is eligible for retirement — which she has talked about doing in the last few months, Singleton added.

What the heck is a "fake bus"??

Whether this is a case of an assisted escape, or if she was perhaps overpowered and kidnapped, the sheriff said, is not known. He said investigators will be trying to determine whether there a relationship between the two that others in the jail were not aware of.

Singleton said normal procedure in transporting a capital murder suspect would call for two armed officers; he said Vicki White arranged transports for inmates as one of her duties at the jail. She was a supervisor, he explained, so when she told her subordinates she was transporting the inmate, they didn't question her.

Singleton said that after speaking to the court, officials confirmed that there had not been any scheduled mental health evaluation. He also said that her decision to take the inmate to the courthouse alone was "a strict violation of policy," as someone charged with that severe of a crime should have been accompanied by two deputies. Because Vicki was in charge of courthouse transportation, he said, it's likely that none of her subordinates felt comfortable challenging her on the policy breach.

Though the circumstances may appear suspicious, Singleton said he would want conclusive proof before accusing Vicki White of any wrongdoing. He said White had been voted employee of the year multiple times, and was well-liked and respected. He also said she was eligible for retirement, and had discussed leaving the department for months.

"Obviously, you know, we're looking at all angles," he said. "Did she assist him in escaping? That's obviously a possibility. So we're looking into that as one angle of the investigation. Was she kidnapped en route to the courthouse? You know, taken against her will? That's obviously another angle we're looking at."
