At 7:15 AM on September 11, 1997, officers with the Amarillo Police Department were dispatched to the 3100 block of north Wilson Street in response to a call for a dead body in the roadway.

Upon arrival, officers found the body of 35-year-old Linda Gayle Jackson lying facedown in the street. Jackson's cause of death was determined to be caused by a vehicle striking her. Further evidence at the scene showed that Jackson had been assaulted inside a vehicle prior to her death, and the case was ruled a homicide.

There is an unproven connection between Jackson's murder, the unsolved murder of Gloria Ann Covington (not featured in this list due to no available photograph) and the well-known disappearance of Dorien Thomas, who vanished in October 1997.

From the charleyproject.org,

"Dorien was one of the children who discovered the body of Gloria Ann Covington in August of 1997, more than one year prior to his disappearance. Dorien was playing in Hilltop Park in Amarillo with friends when they came across Covington's remains behind the YMCA building. She had been stabbed to death.

Covington's friend witnessed her murder and was assaulted herself during the crime. She said that Covington was attacked inside a light-colored pickup truck before her murder. Linda Gayle Jackson was killed one month after Covington's death. Witnesses reported that she entered a vehicle similar to the truck involved in Covington's case. Both women's homicides remain unsolved."

''Jackson was thought to have been engaged in the act of prostitution at the time of her murder, which has likely hindered efforts to involve the public in solving the case. Due to this black mark on Linda Gayle Jackson's case, please note the following details:

Jackson was the mother of two daughters and was survived by three brothers and a sister. She was a life-long resident of Amarillo and a graduate of Amarillo College; at the time of her death, she worked for Sytel Computer Co.

She left behind a grieving family and she was beloved.

If you know anything about the murder, you are urged to call Potter Randall Special Crimes at 378-9468, submit an anonymous tip via amapolice.org, or call the Amarillo Crime Stoppers at 806-374-4400''

''The Amarillo Police Department announced Dec. 20 that it is establishing a Cold Case investigation unit, in hopes that the work of the investigators will allow APD to find new leads and bring peace to loved ones of victims.

According to APD, this unit was created in part due to the technological developments allowing more advanced research and testing capabilities. The new unit will be a part of the APD Homicide Unit and currently consists of officer Jimmy Rifenberg. APD stated that the new unit will allow Rifenberg to focus on solving area murder cases that had previously been stalled by lack of evidence or viable leads.

In total, Amarillo currently has 49 unsolved homicides dating back to the 1950s. According to the police department, evolving technology has made it possible to find new evidence in cases that were previously unsolved.''

"The main thing we want to reiterate is that this is for the families and victims. The officers work so hard on these cases, and then it gets to a point where they don't have a lead and it becomes a cold case, and the officers try to get back to them when they can, but couldn't always focus in it. Bringing in officer Jimmy and having these cases be his sole focus, we want the families to know that and know that we haven't and didn't forget about them," Burr said.

APD asks that if any individual has any information regarding any of the unsolved homicides, please call 806-378-9446. To leave an anonymous tip individuals are asked to call Crimestoppers at 806-374-4400, download the P3 tips app, or go to their website at amapolice.org.''
