''(CNN) -- A woman crashed her car into a house in the Mar Vista neighborhood of Los Angeles on Friday, setting both the vehicle, and the house on fire, officials say. A person with knowledge of the matter told CNN the driver was actress Anne Heche.

The driver was traveling at a high rate of speed when she ran off the road and collided with a residence, Los Angeles Police Public Information Officer Jeff Lee tells CNN. The impact left the car engulfed in flames and the driver suffered burn injuries. She was taken to a local hospital by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics in critical condition. It took firefighters more than an hour to "access, confine and fully extinguish the stubborn flames within the heavily damaged structure," the LAFD said.

There were no other injuries reported.''

She crashed, stopped, was approached by a bystander, then sped off to the second crash.

“Witnesses told TMZ Heche first crashed her blue Mini Cooper into the garage of an apartment complex.
Residents of the complex tried to get Heche out of her vehicle, but she sped away and crashed into the home a short time later, TMZ reports.”

“I was positive that the driver was dead. That she had burned up. It took at least 30 minutes for the fire department to douse the flames, extract the car and pull her out of the car.'”

Ugh on first looking at this I thought it was that horrific crash in LA where the 6 people died and the drunk speeding woman (who hasn’t been named yet) survived. That terrible accident has been on my mind.
o/t UGH.

Wow. I remember her horrible manic phase decades ago. It makes me think this was part of another breakdown, perhaps. Awful. I hope she can recover well.

What a scary thing to happen.
I went looking for more about this and found LA Times article from 2004 where she discusses the earlier breakdown. Parts of it definitely sound similar.

ETA: TRIGGER WARNING SA: Another news story from 2001 regarding her mental health and childhood abuse. Wow. This poor woman has been through hell and back.
Exclusive: Anne Heche Interview

Yes. I remember her interview with Barbara Walters when she said she had been "insane" most of her life. She was very open about her alternate personality and self destructive behavior. She described horrific sexual abuse by her father. I remember thinking she was a deeply troubled woman.

She's expected to live, I hope she does and can get the help she needs, if this was in fact some sort of manic episode.

The footage from the Ring made me gasp. How lucky that this was a one-sided incident, because no pedestrian, cyclist or animal would have survived that impact.

Hopefully the people whose home burned down will not suffer from this too much, mentally and financially.

I was surprised people are assuming it was a vodka bottle, as a European my mind went straight to sparkling water!

There is a picture of the inside of the car, taken after the accident, with what looks like a water bottle on the front seat.

ETA There are actually two water bottles, one on both front seats, and also a red cap.

''Manpearl who has lived in the family friendly neighborhood said he ran towards the intersection where the Mini had crashed into the home.

‘Before I approached the car, I saw the resident of the home standing barefoot in the debris. She was in shock and frantically asked me to help get her pets out of the house. I was able to get the leashes for her two small dogs and escorted her out of the side of her house. She had her two dogs with her and a tortoise.’

Manpearl explained how he then went to the car to help the driver who was wedged inside between the airbag and the seat.

‘I tried speaking with her a few times asking if she was ok but she wasn’t responding so I had to get closer. I was able to open the back door of the car and crawled half-way inside. This time when I asked her if she was ok, she said no.’

Manpearl asked Heche if she could raise her hand to see if she was ok and she said no and made some grunts. That’s when the hero neighbor felt water dripping on him only to realize another neighbor was squirting a hose at the car which had now caught on fire and was quickly spreading up the walls of the house.

‘I tried to talk to her again and noticed it was getting smokey and the flames were now on my right and my left so I quickly made my way out of the car.’

The engineer made his way to the front of the house and attempted to put out the flames with another hose but realized it was useless because the whole house was ablaze.

By now nearly ten fire trucks had arrived on the scene.

‘I was positive that the driver was dead. That she had burned up. It took at least 30 minutes for the fire department to douse the flames, extract the car and pull her out of the car.’

‘I was surprised to find out that it was Anne Heche. I think I knew she had had problems in the past.’

The owner of the home, together with all her pets, tortoise included, spent the remainder of the day at Manpearl’s house where neighbors brought her food and clothes. The LAFD said her whole house is now destroyed.''

One of the articles posted upthread suggests that the bottle with the red cap is vodka.

...An earlier shot also shows Heche moments before the second accident at the wheel with a bottle of vodka with a red cap plonked in the cup holder...
