Anthony Bourdain, 61, Tv Chef And Travel Host, Found Dead, Suicide

Anthony Bourdain shared his love for Detroit's culture and history

Late chef and television host Anthony Bourdain was a New Yorker to his core, but he was not shy about his love for the Motor City.

Bourdain — who was found dead of an apparent suicide in France Friday morning — had visited Detroit many times for his travel and culinary shows for the Travel Channel and CNN. He was also working with the latter network on a historical documentary series, “Detroit 1963: Once in a Great City,” which was reportedly scheduled to debut this year.

Between "No Reservations" and "Parts Unknown" Bourdain featured the Cadieux Cafe, Polonia Restaurant in Hamtramck, Al-Ameer in Dearborn, Duly's Place coney island in Detroit, a Guns + Butter pop-up dinner with Chef Craig Lieckfelt and elsewhere...

Ah, the beautifully rich tapestry of Detroit's history.

Anthony Bourdain genuinely engaged himself with the culture, wherever he was.

Excerpt from the link (below):

"Bourdain also called being from Detroit a "status symbol."

"It implies something. You come from a place where all of this great music and all these great cars, and all of these great, cool things [are from]," he said. "I'd love to be able to say that I came from Detroit. That would be like the coolest thing I could ever say."

Anthony Bourdain loved Detroit, called it beautiful and magnificent

Anthony Bourdain dead at 61, CNN says

Bourdain frequently filmed in South Louisiana and was in Cajun country earlier this year for an upcoming episode of "Parts Unknown." The Louisiana shot episode is scheduled to air June 17.

He was a writer for HBO's "Treme" and he's featured New Orleans over the years on his food shows, including "The Layover" and "No Reservations." He's had shots at Snake & Jakes with Donald Link and Steve Stryjewski, eaten at Pho Tau Bay with John Besh and had drinks with musician Davis Rogan at the Sazerac Bar.
Bourdain said New Orleans was the one city in America he would tell someone "they absolutely had to eat."

"In America, there might be better gastronomic destinations than New Orleans, but there is no place more uniquely wonderful. So I would say New Orleans. With the best restaurants in New York, you'll find something similar to it in Paris or Copenhagen or Chicago. But there is no place like New Orleans. So it's a must see city because there's no explaining it, no describing it. You can't compare it to anything. So, far and away New Orleans."

Anthony Bourdain on New Jersey and why his show stands out in one of his last interviews

Anthony Bourdain was slated to be the cover of the November issue of (201), the food issue. Freelance writer Ian Spelling, who was commissioned to write the piece, interviewed Bourdain in April 2018. Bourdain, who grew up in Leonia, died by suicide in France on June 7. This is among the last interviews he gave. Spelling reports that "he sounded engaged, speaking eloquently about food and his youth in Leonia, and forcefully supporting his girlfriend, actress-director-activist Asia Argento."

Spelling spoke to Bourdain by phone while he was shooting "Parts Unknown," his CNN show, in Spain. Here is the interview, edited and condensed.

I wonder if all of the recent reporting describing how "easy" (quick and relatively pain free) it is to end one's life by hanging has any influence on those who are already on the brink? I'm not saying that these suicides shouldn't be factually and completely reported, but if there's some agreement that widespread reporting of certain events lead to "copycats" in the aftermath, maybe there is something to it. IMO RIP

My memories of food are intertwined with nurture, especially with people I loved who were with me at various times in this journey of life.

This quote from Anthony Bourdain brings this home to me:

"Bourdain said. "Whereas if you sit down with people and just say, 'Hey what makes you happy? What do you like to eat?' They'll tell you extraordinary things, many of which have nothing to do with food."

I believe these can initiate "triggers" which may happen to people, bringing a flood of pain to their minds.

State of mind, depression, all play a huge role.

I wish with all of my heart that everyone would reach out before they feel enveloped by these feelings. Thankfully, some people do.

Opening the discussion in society will be a tremendous help to people.

An article about media guidelines for covering suicide -

"Great care should be given to the way in which suicides are reported in the media. Improper reporting techniques can lead to suicide contagion (copycat suicides).

One of the best examples of suicide contagion was that of the Vienna train suicides of the 1980s. For about four years, from 1984 to 1987, several individuals died by suicide by running or jumping in front of oncoming trains. The media coverage of each suicide was sensational and extensive, and caused numerous “copycat” suicides.

Finally, in 1987, a campaign was launched to alter the way the media reported the suicides. The result of the campaign was dramatic – suicides and attempted suicides dropped by over 80% after only six months.

Thus, the way suicides are reported in the media can either CAUSE suicides or PREVENT suicide.

I'm truly saddened by Anthony Bourdain's untimely and tragic passing. If I made a list of celebrities I'd like to meet, AB would have been in the top 5. Bourdain always seemed at ease with anyone he encountered and was able to relate to people from all walks of life. There are still a few more episodes of his current Parts Unknown series, but I will surely miss his travel/food shows. I feel the need for some No Reservations and/or Parts Unknown binge-watching.

Yes! Thank you for this. I'm in a great place in life but I will admit learning of three suicides (Kate Spade, Emily Glass, and now Anthony) in just the last few days has me a little rattled and down. I can't imagine how this affects people who're in a dark place. My heart hurts for them.

I love Bourdain. My grandmother and I watch his show together.

Shocking and sad.

I wish he and other suicides could have seen their lives as something other than a prison they had to escape.

To me, the most important words to remember, and to hang on to tightly throughout our lives are "This, too, shall pass".

How can we help prevent suicides? Ask and listen, doctors say
People may fear that talking about it will trigger an attempt, but it's the right thing to do, experts say.

Suicides have reached a record high in the United States and the deaths of two beloved celebrities — fashion designer Kate Spade and celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain — have left people wondering how to help a friend who might be in crisis.

Even as psychiatrists and public health specialists struggle to explain the growing numbers, people who have survived their own suicide attempts say there are things that ordinary people can do to help someone they know who might be at risk of suicide: ask, and listen...

Deeply, deeply saddened to hear. RIP Anthony and thank you for your incredible work. I will miss following his show. It was never just the food. He immersed himself in the culture.

It's strange how the death of a man, very few of us, if any really knew, has had such an effect on us. I actually want to cry, but won't allow myself. I wonder what it was about this man that touched so many.

I've gotten a little weepy at times today, so you're not alone if you want to shed a few tears :(

Anthony Bourdain brought the world, its people, their cultures, their cuisine to all of us through his travel/food shows. At the end of each hour of No Reservations or Parts Unknown, we felt as if we'd been right there with AB and his dining companions - eating, drinking, talking, enjoying ourselves with folks we hadn't known but became friends by the end of the program. I am saddened and feel like I've lost a dear friend. Rest in Peace, Mr. Bourdain.
