Her birthday is April 5. Somer Thompson Day will be recognized on that day this year and "each year hereafter," according to the proclamation. April 5 this year falls on a Tuesday. At the commission's March 22 meeting, Somer's mother, Diena Thompson, accepted the proclamation, as well as a symbolic key to the county from Commission Chairman Travis Cummings. "We do need to stand together as a community, we need to stand up against the predators," she said. Thompson said she plans to bring a program to the Jacksonville area called RadKIDS, which teaches children from age 3 to 13 strategies for getting away from would-be abductors and handling bullying and Internet crimes. "It teaches kids about everything. It is a really, really good tool to use," she said.
