Haleigh Cummings vanished 1 year ago

Sheriff Jeff Hardy said he still believes Misty is the key to the investigation. "We have never had tunnel vision in focusing on one piece of the puzzle. That is a major piece of the pie. No question about it," Hardy said.

The Sheriff says his Detectives have done everything within the law to get answers from Misty. "We are bound by laws, policy, and procedure, and she has an attorney," said Harding.

Haleigh's father, Ronald Cummings and his ex-wife, Misty, were arrested last month on drug trafficking charges. They remain behind bars both with over a million dollars bond.

Detectives Mark 1 Year Since Haleigh's Disapperance

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office says detectives have investigated thousands of tips since Haleigh Cummings, then 5 years old, disappeared from her family's Satsuma trailer a year ago Wednesday.

The child's father, Ronald Cummings, has said he returned from work and couldn't find his daughter. His then-girlfriend, Misty Croslin, had been baby-sitting the child.

Investigators say evidence and information they've collected indicates a strong likelihood the child's disappearance is the result of foul play by someone known to Cummings or Croslin.

Caylee Anthony and Haleigh Cummings: a motion, an anniversary
posted by halboedeker on February, 10 2010 3:18 PM

Caylee and Haleigh -- they’re two of the most familiar names in Central Florida.

Television looked back at the first anniversary of Haleigh Cummings’ disappearance.

In a report at noon, WESH-Channel 2’s Danielle Bellini recapped Haleigh’s story, which remains an active investigation. Misty Croslin, who was baby-sitting the girl when she vanished, “is not considered a person of interest but investigators believe she holds important answers in the case,” Bellini said.

Bellini summed up Haleigh’s case: “Over the course of the year there’s been intense searches over thousands of acres and almost 6,000 leads, but not one led to Haleigh. The sheriff’s office is still asking for the public’s help to find Haleigh.”

Sheriff Jeff Hardy on Haleigh Cummings investigation
Updated: Wednesday, 10 Feb 2010, 5:50 PM EST

<snipped>
Sheriff Jeff Hardy has more than 20 years law enforcement experience. He's captured murders, rapists, escaped inmates but it was a phone call just one month into his new job as sheriff that would soon become the most difficult challenge he's ever faced. “It was approximately 34 days after I took office. I just knew it wasn’t going to be a good call. And it was my undersheriff calling me and he explained to me that we had a missing 5-year-old.”

Since that phone call, sheriff hardy says life inside the Putnam County Sheriff's Office isn't the same. “There are so many emotions involved in this case. Very difficult. I've got, I take this to bed with me every night.”

The sheriff says everyday work is done inside of his office but everyday, many of his deputies take the investigation home with them. “We signed up for this a long time ago. It’s a long hours, a lot of emotions…but the toll I hate the most is the toll it took on the family. Because they didn’t sign up for this.”

Misty: 'There's Nothing To Break Me On'
More Jailhouse Video Released Of Misty Cummings' Calls With Parents
POSTED: Wednesday, February 10, 2010
UPDATED: 6:51 pm EST February 10, 2010
<snipped>
In the latest round of jailhouse video released by the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, a more animated Misty Cummings appears frustrated with investigators.

Misty: If they give me 20 years in prison it'll be OK because you guys will come see me. I'll get out and everything will be fine. I'm not scared.

Lisa: You'll be old and gray like me.

Misty: I don't care because they're not going to put me away for something I didn't do. And I didn't have anything to do with Haleigh. And if I knew who did, I would tell them. I've told them everything I can tell them and they need to leave me alone about that.

In a visit with her family earlier this month, Cummings talks freely about her plight in jail and Haleigh, who's now been missing for one year.

Lisa: As soon as they find out what happened to Haleigh, everything will be different.

Misty: I know.

Lisa: I can't believe they still believe, you know. It's crazy.

Misty: It's ridiculous, because they got my bond set so high just because of that and it's not fair. This has nothing to do with it.

Lisa: I know.

Misty: That's what they think I'm going to break. There's nothing to break me on, so they need to leave me alone.

Hank Croslin Sr., Misty Cummings' father, also enters the conversation.

Hank: We just need to find Haleigh.

Misty: I know.

Hank: That's what we need to do.

Hank: If we can find Haleigh, it would be better for everybody.

Misty: I know. I've been, I sit and wonder every day, thinking, just trying to go back and think if I missed anything. I do. Every day. And it's just not, dad, there's nothing. I'm telling you. It's hard.

Misty: God's going to bring Haleigh home. God's going to bring Haleigh home.

Lisa: That's right.

The conversation later turned to the intense media coverage of her case.

Lisa: I think Mrs. Nancy Grace needs to keep her mouth shut until she knows her facts.

Lisa: That's right. I don't blame you at all. I mean they need to give you a nationwide apology.

Misty: They're not going to put me down no more. I'm tired of it. I'm going to start standing up for myself.

Lisa: That's what you need to do right there.

Lisa: Do you ever get to watch Nancy Grace?

Misty: No, we don't. I'm glad.

Lisa: Well, yours and Chelsea's and everybody's phone calls are going to be on there tonight.

Misty: Oh, good.

Lisa: I know. This is all crazy.

Misty: Well, whenever I talk to Chelsea here or Timmy or whenever, I'll try to call them later so I can see what's said or whatever.

Her family is holding two vigils for the girl as the Putnam County Sheriff's Office insists it continues to follow up on leads.

Haleigh's father's side of the family is holding a candlelight vigil in Satsuma that will begin at about 6 p.m. It's happening just down the street from where Haleigh vanished from her home in the middle of the night one year ago.

Investigators stress the case is still active and are asking for any tips, including information about Croslin's activities leading up to Haleigh's disappearance.

Cummings' family said the focus isn't on the hardships of the past year, but the heartbreak of Haleigh's disappearance and their hope for her safe return.

Haleigh Update: More Jail Video and Audio Coming!
Posted: Wednesday, 10 February 2010 6:00PM
<snipped>
On January 10, 2010, Haleigh's father, Ronald Cummings, and former babysitter/stepmom, Misty Croslin Cummings, were arrested on drug trafficking charges along with Ron's cousin, Hope Sykes, Misty's brother, Tommy Croslin, and Misty's friend, Donna Brock.

Recently, some audio and video recordings from the jails where the suspects are housed was released.

The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office contacted News Talk 97.3 The SKY to inform us they have two new redacted DVD video recordings of more jail visits with inmates Misty Croslin Cummings and her brother Tommy Croslin along with an audio CD with redacted phone calls from inmate Donna Brock. The audio and video files were too big to be transferred electronically and the notification came to us too late to get a courier to the St Johns County Sheriff's Office before it closed.

The SKY's TJ Hart will drive to St. Augustine at daybreak to get the DVD's and CD's as soon as the doors at the sheriff's office opens. Hopefully, we will be able to load the electronic information on to our laptop computer and have it up and online before 9am ET Thursday.

Please bookmark this page and check back often for updates.

UPDATED: Family, Friends Gather for Haleigh Cummings Vigil
Created: 2/10/2010 7:28:27 AM
Updated: 2/11/2010 3:06:46 AM
<snipped>
Family and friends, along with the Justice Coalition, have gathered in Satsuma for a public candlelight vigil to remember Haleigh Cummings. The vigil began at 6 p.m. in the same neighborhood she vanished from one year ago.

At the vigil, which is at the corner of Tyler Street and Monroe Avenue, the FBI Citizens Academy Alumni will be set up to offer free child identification kits. Included in the kits is everything you need to take inkless fingerprints, cards for detailing a child's physical description, a place to keep a recent photo and an easy to use swab to take and store a small DNA sample.

Ronald Cummings lived in a trailer with his girlfriend, Misty, a year ago when the girl disappeared. Deputies made the trailer off-limits for weeks, and her family never moved back into the home in the Satsuma neighborhood near Highway 17.

Misty's brother, Tommy Croslin, and her father, Hank Croslin Sr., lived about 100 yards away in the same neighborhood.

But neighbors say Hank Croslin Sr. moved out last Saturday, leaving behind some broken furniture and toys on the road. The seven neighbors First Coast News talked to Tuesday said they were glad all the relatives are gone.

"They were a nuisance to the neighborhood," said neighbor Stephanie Santos. "They were very scary to the kids."

Haleigh's family hopeful one year later
Last Update: 4:46 pm
<snipped>
A lot has happened in the year since Haleigh Cummings vanished - her father got married and divorced, and he has been arrested several times. But her family's hope that she'll be found safe has remained unchanged by time.

Through tears, Theresa Neves, Haleigh's grandmother, talks about the growing tribute for her granddaughter. "It reminds us that one day, she'll play with these things, " Neves says about the toys that people have donated in her grand daughter's honor.

One year ago today, 6-year-old Haleigh Cummings disappeared from her Satsuma home. Neves remembers every moment after she got the news.

"I remember that call. It came in the middle of the night," says Neves. "I remember driving as fast as I could to get there and running through the house in the woods."

Tonight, Neves and the rest of Haleigh's family will mark the sad day with a candlelight vigil. She hopes this will remind people that a little girl is still missing and that one day, she'll be found safe.

"I hope with new developments, there will come some answers and Haleigh will come home."

“No Stranger Took Haleigh Cummings!”
Tuesday, February 9th, 2010 at 8:11 pm
<snipped>
As previously released, it is very unlikely that Haleigh’s disappearance is the work of a stranger.

Evidence and information obtained during this investigation indicate a strong likelihood that Haleigh’s disappearance is the result of foul play by someone known to Misty Croslin and/or Ronald Cummings.

There is no specific individual whom investigators have identified as a person of interest. Investigators still believe that Misty Croslin holds important answers in this case. She still refuses to provide any sort of detailed accounting of the hours during the late evening and early morning of Haleigh’s disappearance.

Furthermore, physical evidence at the scene contradicts Misty’s sketchy account of her evening activities.

Sheriff Hardy realizes the importance of keeping Haleigh in the spotlight and the public involved in this case.

He appreciates all of the leads and tips that have been provided, and wants to assure everyone that each lead and tip is acted on by investigators. Sheriff Hardy wants to reassure the public, but mainly Haleigh’s family, that we will continue to aggressively pursue this case until Haleigh is found.

Exclusive: Haleigh Cummings’ Dad Undercover?
Wednesday, February 10th, 2010 at 7:32 pm
<snipped>
The Bald Truth has learned investigators have enlisted a new secret weapon in their strategy to get Misty Croslin to tell what they believe she knows about five year old Haleigh Cummings—her ex husband, Ronald Cummings.

In a surprising revelation, Cummings, behind bars on drug trafficking charges, tells his mother that two law enforcement investigators paid him a visit to brief him on the lines they wanted him to feed Misty, who still carries a torch for the now accused drug dealer she was living with when she reported his daughter missing a year ago today.

“They came and told me what to say, and (that) I had to tell Misty that I really, really loved her,” said Cummings in a jailhouse visit with his mother, Teresa Neves, caught on audio tape and released Tuesday.

The two agents have been working together on the Haleigh Cummings case, we’ve learned, leaning on Misty Croslin and her family for months.

Cummings says they instructed him to tell Misty that “I’d stand behind her no matter what,” discuss how much he missed Haleigh and how broken up he was at losing Junior, working up a sob story to touch her heart and try to unlock the truth, when, so far, all else has failed.

“I just don’t want it getting’ out because they asked me not to even say anything about it,” he went on.

Misty Croslin is in jail charged with eight counts of drug trafficking a county away from Cummings who remains in the Putnam County Jail, near detectives working the Cummings case.

Sheriff Says Haleigh Case is One of the Saddest
Created: 2/10/2010 9:25:46 PM
Updated: 2/10/2010 9:45:22 PM
<snipped>
When Haleigh Cummings disappeared a year ago, Jeff Hardy had just been elected the sheriff of Putnam County.

"It was a challenge dealing with all the media, national and local media, Hardy said. "It was overwhelming if you want to know the truth, but we had to deal with it."

Sitting in his office Wednesday, Hardy spoke to First Coast News in a one-on-one interview about the Haleigh Cummings case.

Hardy said the investigation has been difficult on his staff, himself, and the little girl's family.

HARDY: In my 22 years of law enforcement, this is sad. This is one of the saddest cases I've ever seen.

FIRST COAST NEWS: Sad because you're dealing with a missing girl or is it more than that?

HARDY: It's more than that. Just the whole situation from day-one is sad. What led up to these events is sad.

FIRST COAST NEWS: Many people have said, "why can't they [investigators] break that that teenage girl?"

HARDY: Because we have laws in this state and we have interviewed her extensively. You cannot force an individual to talk. So it's got to be a matter of time. It's a waiting game at this point.

Hardy said he has a team of detectives still working on the Haleigh case.

FIRST COAST NEWS: Are you any closer than you were a year ago to finding Haleigh? Or even a month ago?

HARDY: All I can say is time will tell. Time will tell. That's all I can say , as far as how close we are to solving this case.

UPDATED: Emotions flow at second vigil for Haleigh
Published: Thursday, February 11, 2010 at 6:01 a.m.

Letters from a jailed father, a poem from a grieving grandmother, prayers and tears marked the first anniversary of the disappearance of Haleigh Cummings at a vigil Wednesday night within yards of the home from which she vanished.

But the most emotional message came from Teresa Neves, the paternal grandmother of Haleigh, who read part of a letter from Haleigh's father, Ronald Cummings. He is in the Putnam County Jail on drug charges.
"Momma, I hung a picture of Haleigh and (Ronald Cummings) Junior on my wall right above my pillow ... When I turn over and go to sleep, and wake up, they are the first thing that I see and the last thing before I go to sleep," Neves tearfully read. "I miss them so much ... Haleigh is such a little tomboy. She is her daddy's little girl."

Cummings' sister, Crystal Cummings, read another letter from him in which he dreams of sheriff's officials taking him somewhere without telling him why.
"And then it will hit me -- there's Haleigh, there's my daughter right in front of my eyes," he wrote. "I long for that day more than I long to live."

At Wednesday night's vigil, Annette Sykes, Ronald Cummings' grandmother, read a poem she wrote about Haleigh.
"...Someone took our precious little girl, broke our hearts and shattered our world. Haleigh was taken in the middle of the night, scared and terrified and full of fright," Sykes said. "They searched the river, they searched the ground. Still, our Haleigh was not found ... Haleigh needs to be here with her daddy and brother, grandmas, grannies, papas, sisters and brothers."

Sheffield was at Wednesday's event but did not speak.

Putnam pauses for Haleigh

Teddy bears guarded framed pictures of the 6-year-old along a purple-draped table, which would become an altar for hundreds of candles by the night's end.

Crystal Sheffield, Haleigh's mother, said it felt like it was just yesterday. "I didn't think it would come to this," Sheffield said. "A part of me is missing and nobody will tell us where she is or let us know - it's not fair to her."

Sheffield said she still believes Haleigh is alive, and did not think it would take this long to find her. "It can't go on forever," she said.

Griffis said that Croslin seems to be playing games and needs to "just come clean."

"It's like she's baiting the sheriff's office with 'give me what I want and I'll give you what you want'," Griffis said. "If she's alive, help us get her back. If she's not alive, we still want her back so we can give her a place to rest so we can go visit her."

Sheffield did not give a clear answer as to whether or not she felt Croslin was involved in her daughter's disappearance. "I'm not out to judge nobody," Sheffield said. "I'll can do is pray."

If anything, the release of audio and video recordings of jailhouse conversations between family members and Ronald Cummings, Misty Croslin and Hank "Tommy" Croslin Jr. show how tedious incarceration can be.

Hours of recordings of them talking with relatives have been released, and much of the conversation revolves around life in jail: the food, the cold and the restrictions.

In one conversation, Cummings talks of visiting the dentist for tooth pain. He notes the dentist probably would give him Lortabs, a trade name for a form of hydrocodone, one of the narcotics he is accused of selling.

"It's better to tough it out," Cummings said. "If I can tough it out in here, I can tough it out out there."

In the interview, Croslin seemed to admit to her role in the drug ring.

•Croslin: I did not give the guy ... I did not sell the whole time. I'm being charged with everybody.
•Mother: I know. That's what I don't understand. I mean you told the truth. Why do they keep putting charges on you?
•Croslin: Exactly.

Croslin also told her mother she wants people to stop asking her about Haleigh.

•Croslin: They're not going to put me away for something I didn't do, and I didn't have anything to do with Haleigh, and if I knew who did, I would tell. I've told them everything that I can tell them, so they need to leave me alone about this. Why I'm in this jail has nothing to do with Haleigh.
•Mother: That's right.
•Croslin: Then leave me alone.

New jailhouse video was released Thursday showing Misty Croslin-Cummings speaking with her mother during a jailhouse visitation. Investigators say Croslin-Cummings was the last person to see missing 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings, her then step-daughter, before she disappeared one year ago.

"They're not gonna put me away for something I didn't do, and I didn't have anything to do with Haleigh," Croslin-Cummings told her mother by jail phone.

In the recording, Croslin-Cummings tells her mother that police need to "leave her alone," because she has told them everything she knows about the missing little girl.

Misty is in the St. Johns County Jail on charges of illegally dealing in prescription drugs. Her bail is set at $1.35 million.

"If they give me 20 years in prison it'll be OK because you guys will come see me. I'll get out and everything will be fine. I'm not scared," she said.

"You'll be old and gray like me," her mother replied.

Misty believes authorities are trying to force a confession out of her. "I've told them everything I can tell them and they need to leave me alone about that," she told her mother.
