Elaine Jones lived in Box Hill, a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Elaine was married to Alan Jones and there were 4 children, Gregory, Pauline, Nita and Jennifer. Alan, Elaine, Nita and Jennifer were camping at Town beach, Tocumwal (on the NSW-Victorian border), the beach and camping area is situated on the banks of Australia's largest river, the Murray River.
This was a yearly camping holiday for the Jones family and they would always camp at the same spot every year, the Jones family were regular visitors to Tocuwmal over the Christmas - New Year period. In January 1980 the Jones family set up camp at the Town Beach where they enjoyed swimming and fishing in the river. On the night of the 3rd January 1980, Elaine left the camp site at around 9.30pm and walked the 2 km's along the path to the local cafe to buy milk and chocolate, this was a nightly occurrance as there camp site did have refrigeration.
Alan woke on Friday 4th January to find his wife missing, Alan and his 2 daughters immediately began a search for her along the river banks before Alan got into his boat, along with daughter Jennifer and continued the search of the river. Elaine's naked body was found approximately 1 km west of the bridge floating against a log in the water.
Alan pulled the boat alongside and dragged his wife's body into the boat, in doing so Alan suffered a heart attack and died. Jennifer was left stranded in the boat with both deceased parents. According to reports Jennifer swam to the shore and raised the alarm.
Police attended and it was ascertained that Elaine had her throat cut, she was naked and had been in the water for some time. New South Wales Homicide detectives attended the scene and began an investigation. Many people were interviewed, as the town was very busy with holiday makers, and a photo kit of a suspicious man was circulated through the media.
no crime scene was found and very little evidence was recovered.
This January marks the 40th anniversary of one of the states most baffling crimes. According to police there were 3 suspects, Alan (unlikely), an un named suspect and Raymond John Edmunds (Mr Stinky)
