I wonder if there is any connection? Or perhaps things like 'gas hazards' and the like are relatively common in these high rise buildings. (I once worked in a building where firefighters appeared on about a weekly basis responding to what ended up being false alarms).

Fifteen minutes after the incident, firefighters were called to the same block of flats to investigate a 'gas hazard'

A Queensland Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman says its crews carried out atmospheric testing.

'But that matter is now in the hands of police,' she said.

Reported as a false alarm .... or a decoy ... :dunno:

"Three fire crews were also called to the unit following reports of a gas leak, but police later confirmed that it was a false alarm."

SHE came to the Gold Coast to watch two friends make a lifelong promise of love.

Ms Wright, a passionate animal rights advocate and the daughter of a Christian church deacon, was on the Gold Coast for a wedding, travelling from her home in New Zealand’s Lower Hutt region for a fortnight-long adventure with her Australian friends.

She was only days away from boarding a plane home to her family when she organised to meet Mr Tostee through dating app Tinder

Detectives are appealing for anyone who may have any information which could assist the investigation to contact Gold Coast police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Oh, how sad ... a deacon's daughter .. Mr Tostee was not the kind of guy for her, by all accounts. :(

I'm just waiting for police to name a suspect and/or put forward a theory before I say much else.

More info from wittnesses:

"At 2.20am, witnesses were woken by loud screams and raised voices echoing from the 14th floor of Avalon Apartments.
"I heard her screaming once, then she stopped. Then she screamed and then she stopped again. I think she screamed a third time and after that I heard a bang," witness Tania said.
"Very upsetting, very upsetting, I couldn't believe it."
Witness Adam said: "By the sounds of things it's happened on my side of the building, right by my bedroom window".
David Hutchinson of Queensland Police said: "Voices were heard and noises were heard coming from the unit".

Aint this the truth??!!:

The death sparked a warning from renowned Australian child and adolescent psychologist Dr Michael Carr-Gregg for people to avoid using the Tinder app.

“Clearly people on Tinder aren’t always who they say they are, so there’s always that whole ‘anybody can be anybody on the internet’ concern,” Dr Carr-Gregg said.

“In my mind it’s terribly superficial. It’s based entirely on appearance. There’s no depth to it and my advice would be to stay as far away as possible from it.”

If it's ever perceived that I have a lot to say about the suspects and not much about the victims in these cases, it's because I have a daughter, just a few short years away from being an adult. And I imagine what it'd be like to be that mother who gets *that* phone call from the police...

.. and then I have to watch my girl go out into the world every day. It hurts too much, for me to focus on the victim.

But I do anyway. My thoughts are with Warriena and her loved ones.

No worries, Ausgirl. Completely understand .. remembering not so long ago when my DD was a teen and out there without her mum. Scary until you can feel that they know what they are doing and are staying within the protection of a stable group of friends. It takes a while, and is pretty worrying and stressful getting them through those teen years.

Re Tinder.. I have a rule for everybody in my house, seeing as we all are friendly people with a big online presence: we can't meet up with anyone we haven't known for more than 6 months, and they have to know *in person* at least one real life friend who thinks very well of them.

This is my own rule for me. And my daughter sticks by this as well if the kids can't have their parents drop them over here first (she also takes her boyfriend with her and they all meet in a public place first).

They came home today from a visit with an online friend of a friend in another suburb, at his mum's house. First thing she said when they got in: "Omg mum, he was a 55 year old pedo. Who killed us. Ok?"

Anyway. I hope this all makes her wise to sites like that. People are so rarely what they seem at first glance.

this case has upset me quite a bit, she's too much my girl for comfort, so forgive my unhelpful blah'ing, lovely ws'ers

Oh Ausgirl, I'm sorry this case has upset you like that. Sending you lots of love :seeya:

Looking at the Google streetview .. there are a number of high rise apartment buildings surrounding the Avalon. The Tiki would get a good view of one side of the Avalon, another high rise on the other side, and a high rise across the street. Every side of the Avalon would be viewable by someone somewhere.

And visitors to Surfers will all be aware of how late revelers and holiday-takers can sit up at night on their balconies, gazing out at the neon lights and waterways.

With all the MSM, I imagine that there will be more than the few witnesses coming forward that we have heard of so far. It is a town that is very alive at night.

So Mr Tostee is known to police.

"Australia's Nine News reported Tostee was known to police for a fraud he was previously involved in that netted him and two friends AU$30,000 (NZ$32,800). The trio were found guilty in 2004 of making hundreds of fake ID cards for underage teenagers attending end-of-exams party week known as Schoolies."

Hmmmmm...

He's been a busy boy...:waitasec:

Or why you would want to climb over it .... 14 floors up ....

What would make a 26-year old woman want to do that? IF she did that.

And how does this come into play ... ?

"Three fire crews were also called to the unit following reports of a gas leak, but police later confirmed that it was a false alarm."

I notice Mr Tostee was not the one to call the police .. he took off for hours and hours (as per enzeder's post above). But did he call about the apparent 'gas leak'?

"Officers were initially called to the scene when a witness on the ground contacted police."

http://www.stuff.co.nz/world/australia/10367377/Kiwi-dies-after-Surfers-Paradise-balcony-fall

Yes... why would anyone want to climb down 14 storeys???? :what:

and... You answered the question I was thinking about...(and missed)...

A WITNESS called LE... Not Mr. Tostee..

More things that make ya go... Hmmmmm?

:waitasec:

The New Zealand Herald:
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11306568

"Witnesses described hearing a woman scream, and it is believed a neighbour called emergency services after seeing her fall.
Police arrived a short time later but Mr Tostee had left the scene,
the newspaper reported.
He handed himself in to detectives about 11am local time yesterday and was questioned for more than two hours at Surfers Paradise Police Station.
He was released without charge after being taken for forensic testing."

I wonder if he handed himself in after calls from LE on his cell phone?

or if he went in by his own decision...

sounds like he was lawyering up while he was gone from his apartment... After poor Warriena's "fall" to her death...
