At least one dead in Vienna after 'apparent terror attack' at six locations near central synagogue | National Post
''VIENNA — Multiple gunmen opened fire at six locations in central Vienna starting near the central synagogue on Monday, killing at least one person and wounding several others in what the interior minister said appeared to be a terrorist attack.

Several “heavily armed and dangerous” attackers were still on the loose as police shut down and sealed off large parts of central Vienna in a manhunt, Interior Minister Karl Nehammer said. Residents were urged to stay indoors.''

''Police said on Twitter that at least one person had been killed and several injured, including a police officer. Vienna mayor Michael Ludwig told ORF that 15 people were being treated in Vienna hospitals, and that seven were in a serious condition.''

Vienna terrorist attack: several dead after shooting near synagogue in Austria – live updates
''Explosive belt worn by attacker being defused
The explosive belt we mentioned earlier – reported to have been worn by an attacker who has since been shot – is currently being defused by the demining service, the Australian broadcaster ORF reports:

According to the information provided by the crisis team to the ORF, the suspected perpetrator shot was wearing an explosives belt. This is currently being defused by the demining service. He is also said to have carried a lot of ammunition with him.''

''Austrian chancellor Sebastian Kurz said on Monday night that the attack in the heart of Vienna was “definitely” a terror attack that had been “very professionally” planned.

Citing government sources, broadcaster ORF reported that the gunman shot by police outside St Rupert’s Church was carrying an explosive belt and a bag filled with a large amount of ammunition.

Several special forces units have been brought together to search for “mobile perpetrators” who are still believed to be at large.

Oskar Deutsch, the president of the Jewish Community Vienna said on Twitter that all synagogues, Jewish schools, kosher restaurants and supermarkets would remain closed on Tuesday.''

This is deeply saddening and horrific. I am hoping so much that these terrorists are found soon. Perhaps the deceased terrorist's identity can be found and help lead the police to the others.

When I read that citizens of Vienna were out in restaurants because the lockdown there would begin at midnight tonight, it reminded me of other times.

The other times being whenever people are out and about in their lives, at Christmas markets or concerts, in mosques, churches or synagogues or just anywhere feeling safe.

It seems that these terrorists strike when the atmosphere feels normal to citizens. It is so inhumane. It's as if the evil planners behind these attacks enjoy catching people off guard, while tearing their lives from this earth.

My heart is with the loved ones who have had precious people torn from their lives, perished at the hands of such evil. May they be surrounded by comfort and love.

May the injured recover.

I hope that the people of Vienna know that the world is sending comfort to them right now, in the midst of this fear and sorrow.

5 dead in Vienna attack; assailant had previous conviction
''VIENNA -- Five people died, including an assailant, and 17 others were wounded in a shooting in the heart of Vienna hours before a coronavirus lockdown started, Austrian authorities said Tuesday. The dead attacker was a 20-year-old Austrian-North Macedonian dual national who had a previous terror conviction.

Two men and two women died from their injuries in the attack Monday evening, Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said. The suspected attacker was shot and killed by police.

Vienna's hospital service said seven people were in life-threatening condition Tuesday after the attack, the Austrian news agency APA reported. In total, 17 people were being treated in hospitals, with gunshot wounds but also cuts.''

''Interior Minister Karl Nehammer later told APA that the dead assailant, who had roots in the Balkan nation of North Macedonia, had a previous conviction under a law that punishes membership in terrorist organizations.

The attacker, named as Kujtim Fejzulai, was sentenced to 22 months in prison in April 2019 because he had tried to travel to Syria to join the Islamic State group. He was granted early release in December under juvenile law.''

Islamic State claims responsibility for Vienna attack | Toronto Sun
''CAIRO — Islamic State claimed responsibility on Tuesday for a deadly attack in Vienna, in a statement issued through its Amaq News Agency along with a picture and video purporting to show the gunman.

The picture, released on Telegram, showed a bearded man identified as “Abu Dagnah Al-Albany.” The accompanying statement said he had attacked crowds in central Vienna on Monday with a pistol and machine gun before being shot dead by police.''

In the photo, Albany carries a pistol, a machine gun and a machete and is wearing a ring stamped with a sentence saying “Mohammed is the messenger of Allah.”

Amaq posted a video of Albany minutes later in which he pled allegiance to Islamic State leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashemi al-Quraishi. He was speaking Arabic in the video.''
