22 years later, Phoenix cold case remains a mystery
Oct 18 2019 rbbm

"Having never forgotten the case, in the last few years, Jenn has made the ancestry connection to this cold case.

"So the DNA Doe Project agreed to take her as an active case. She has her own page up here as 'Phoenix Jane doe 1997' is her case name,” added Skeivik.

"In this case, we were able to determine that she's from an area of Chihuahua, Mexico," added Det. Samudio."

Chihuahua is a northern Mexican state, where many in the Phoenix area, have migrated from. The hope is that someone from the region will have submitted his/her DNA information and make a connection to this cold case.

"Even if they are a very distant relative, the more matches that are visible for this yep of work the easier it is," added Skeivik. "I get more hopeful every day that she'll be found or her family will be found and she'll get her name back."

Her name is Bertha Barroteren.
DNA Doe Project

"DNA Doe Project would like to announce that the identity of Phoenix Jane Doe 1997 has been made and confirmed by the Missing and Unidentified Persons Unit of the City of Phoenix Police Department.

We have been working on her case for nearly a year, however, we did not provide the break in the case. Credit for that really goes to Jennifer Skeivik, who discovered the Jane Doe 22 years ago. Jennifer was recently interviewed in the media (link below), resulting in the case being publicized. After Jennifer’s interview, the story was circulated amongst social media and advocacy groups and eventually caught the attention of a family member.

We’ll post more details when they have been released, but here is a link to the breaking story on the woman we now know was Bertha Alicia Holguin Barroteran.

It's so nice to see a living photo of her instead of the postmortem. This just goes to show it's worth it to keep promoting these Doe cases in the news and on social media. All it takes is the right person seeing it and recognizing their missing loved one.

Rest in Peace lovely Bertha. You have your name back now.

DDP might not have technically solved the case, but in a way they did. The new publicity from DDP working on the case led to her family seeing the media about her, leading to her identification. If they hadn't taken the case there's a good chance she'd still be unidentified. I must say the NAMUS sketch was a very good likeness of her. RIP Bertha.

Yes, I definitely agree. The exposure for these cases is absolutely great and is working well. Debra Jackson and Bertha’s cases were solved this way.

Not sure if Mexico retains this custom, but Spanish naming customs include a paternal surname followed by a maternal surname.
If this is true in this example, her first and paternal surname would be Holguin followed by her mother's surname, Barroteran.
