AZ - Sanaa Cunningham, 7, abused before death, Maricopa County, 12 Feb 2017 *Arrests**

Hope so, it's been a long time coming. I knew this one had taken a long time to go to trial, but read 8 years in the latest news articles. That is a crazy amount of time to be locked up, without yet being found guilty

Since this is in the US, the defendant must have waived the right to a speedy trial (which, to my understanding, is common when the defense needs more time to prepare for trial). I don't believe it's legal to have someone locked up for 8 years without a trial unless they waive that right. (I don't have time right now to look for a source to confirm that, so JMO based on my memory of my college civics class.)

Yes - they did - from my notes -
[8th time trial was cancelled] so - they have "waived" it 8 times now....

First trial was set to begin on 9/12/18, then 12/4/18, then 7/20/20, then 3/21/22, then 2/15/23, then 9/3/24, then 7/7/25, then the last one on 8/18/25.... now 9/2 for jury selection, trial to start 9/22/25 {per my guess].

Okay - I believe their trial date has been moved - again - for the 9th time now - but it sure is hard to read this court site...
I had jury selection beginning on 9/2 thru 9/4 then trial starting 9/22 thru 10/16 - now they have trial in November listed. And seem like "odd-ball" dates for trial. My notes in brackets [ ] in calender.

and of course - not finding any current articles except the one with Lisa's interview. Anyone else find anything about trial changing dates??

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The murder trial started on Wednesday for a former Phoenix Police officer and his wife who are accused of killing their 7-year-old daughter in February 2017.

Prosecutors said Germayne and Lisa Cunningham had a history of abuse and neglect that led to the murder of Sanaa Cunningham.

The defense said the child had physical and behavioral issues, and this was a tragic death.

What was shown in the courtroom during opening statements was heartbreaking, as photos and videos revealed a seemingly healthy 7-year-old Sanna’s decline from October 2016 to February 2017. She was in the care of Germayne, her father, and Lisa, who was Sanaa’s stepmom.

On Wednesday afternoon, Germayne’s defense team gave their opening statements and said Germayne had no idea his daughter had an infection and believed her symptoms were side effects of a new medication she was given that they expected to happen, per the doctor who prescribed it.

“Germayne Cunningham is not a doctor. He has no stethoscope, he doesn’t have a white jacket, and he has no medical degree. Yet here we are. Because Germayne Cunningham, a father, did not see what even doctors missed, a silent infection that became deadly, and they call that murder. Germayne Cunningham did not murder his daughter,” said defense attorney Natalee Segal.

The defense said the detectives never interviewed Sanaa’s doctors.

“Officers, who are also not doctors, took one look at a dead 7-year-old and decided her father murdered her. You just heard evidence related to the most serious charges in this case. Germayne Cunningham did not intentionally or knowingly delay medical care for his daughter. He did not murder her,” Segal said.

Because Lisa has her own defense attorneys, they will give their opening statements on Thursday morning, 9/25/25.

Guessing trial continues on Monday, 9/29/25.

In opening statements on Wednesday, the state claimed text messages sent between the Cunninghams revealed the abuse toward Sanaa. But on Thursday, Lisa’s defense team stated that the messages pointed to a different story, indicating a fear for the safety of the couple’s other five children.

Prosecutors argued that the Cunninghams waited too long to take Sanaa to the emergency room after she wasn’t breathing correctly. Not long after, Sanaa died of complications from sepsis.

Lisa Cunningham’s attorney took jurors through hours of Sanaa’s complicated medical and behavioral history during Thursday’s court hearing, showing many of the texts in question.

“These are parents that are struggling, and yet they don’t want to institutionalize her. Cunningham (39/now 46) “father” indicted & charged (12/1/17) & arraigned (1/2/18) with 1st degree murder & 10 counts of child abuse. Plead not guilty. Held without bond. DA will seek DP. [DA withdrew intent to seek DP on 2/10/25]. Maricopa County
*Lisa-Marie Cunningham (44/now 51) “step mom” indicted & charged (12/1/17) & arraigned (1/19/18) with 1st degree murder & 10 counts of child abuse. Plead not guilty. Held without bond. DA will seek DP. [DA withdrew intent to seek DP on 2/10/25]. Bond & conditions changed (3/10/25) to $500K secured bond & electronic monitoring for both. Maricopa County
Jury Selection began on 9/24/25 & ended 9/24/25. 12 jurors & 6 alternates.
