Why an ESL teacher might have helped 3 O.C. inmates escape - LA Times

ETA: there's more detail on the search as well:
[...]

Investigators believe the men have been living out of a van that was stolen in South Los Angeles the day after the escape. A man matching Duong's description stole a white 2008 GMC Savana around 4:40 p.m. Saturday, police said. Duong is believed to have responded to a Craigslist advertisement attempting to sell the vehicle, Hallock said.

Investigators were "extremely encouraged" by the new leads, he said.

At least 10 other people have been arrested since Wednesday as part of the escape investigation. Some were members of a Vietnamese street gang that Tieu is affiliated with, while others were detained because of probation violations.

The department has not identified the gang, but court records show Tieu was one of several members of the Tiny Rascals — a large South Asian gang known to operate in Orange County and Long Beach — charged in a 2011 murder

Sheriff Sandra Hutchens has said that Nayeri, 37, is believed to be the mastermind of the escape.

Maybe there shouldn't be mixed genders working at prisons ?

And what is the point of English classes... so they could better themselves when they were released and thus become productive members of society ?
Somehow that's doubtful---given their crimes. I realize that's not being positive at all.
How much was their education costing the taxpayer ? And now, even more to re-apprehend them ?
My .02 is that this despicable woman needs to be made an example of ; and the cost of the criminals' arrest should be taken from her bank accounts.

Hopefully they'll be caught soon, and without further loss of life.
At least they have clue as to what type of vehicle they're driving.

[..]
Two raids conducted by Orange County sheriff's SWAT units overnight could be linked to three inmates who escaped from the Orange County Central Men's Jail.

Both raids took place late Thursday night - one in the 8100 block of Westminster Avenue in Westminster and the other near Garden Grove Boulevard and Hoover Street in Garden Grove.

Sheriff's officials have not yet confirmed the two raids were connected to the search for the three escaped inmates, Jonathan Tieu, 20, Bac Duong, 43, and Hossein Nayeri, 37.

FWIW, my family members in Little Saigon reported to me over the phone this morning that they heard the helicopters overhead last night, until almost midnight.

Ravaghi booked on accessory to felony (jail escape). Arraignment set for Monday.

Nayeri and Ravaghi had written correspondence beyond a "teacher-student" relationship.

“The correspondence that they had in writing was of a personal nature”: Lt. Jeff Hallock says of Ravaghi & Nayeri.

“Much more personal than it should have been” Lt. Jeff Hallock says about relationship btwn Ravaghi & inmate Nayeri.

To be a US Marine - do you not need to know how to read and speak English? I thought you did but maybe not??

I just read this article and it says that Nayeri is a 44-year-old former U.S. Marine and grew up in central California.
Why was he even allowed in the ESL class in the first place? I would think that if his English was good enough to become a US Marine he wouldn't need ESL classes in jail?

California jail escapee caught
One of the three inmates who escaped from a California jail last week has turned himself in, Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens told reporters in Santa Ana.

Bac Tien Duong, 43, was taken into custody in Santa Ana on Friday morning.

Authorities are still looking for the other two escapees.

If officials were aware that the nature of the letters were more than a teacher-student relationship, why did they not do something to stop it? If it is against the rules, then follow the rules!

RSBM

Exactly !!!

Don't they have sec. cams during these "classes". for the protection of the employees ? And don't they review them at least occasionally-- to see that nothing nefarious is going on ??
Some more heads need to roll at that prison ; imo.

ETA: correct me if I'm wrong but did the video say the ESL teacher was one of 10 arrested in connection with the incident?

If so, why haven't we heard more about the rest?

The rest seem to be members of the "gang" and it doesn't seem they were directly involved in the escape.

They got his age all wrong. He is 37, not 44. He was born in Iran, which is presumably why he was allowed to take ESL classes. Although since he has been here for a long time I very much doubt he needed these classes. Interestingly his criminal history starts in 2005 (drunk driving that killed a person). He also clearly likes to run from the law, having done so a number of times. Including running to his native country (Iran). I just hope he hasn't managed to run outside the US this time.

After Escapee Surrenders, Investigators Think 2 Missing Inmates Could Be in San Jose or Fresno | KTLA
[...]
Investigators believe the remaining two escaped inmates may be together in the San Jose area in a white van, Sheriff's Department Lt. Jeff Hallock said at an early evening news conference. As recently as Thursday morning or afternoon they were there, and may be headed for the Fresno area, where Nayeri was believed to have an associate, he said.

"At some point, the three of them were together in the San Jose area," Hallock said.

The manager of The Alameda Motel in San Jose told Bay Area TV station KRON that that Tieu check into the motel on Tuesday evening and checked out Thursday morning.

He also told the station he saw a white van.

Investigators with the San Jose Police Department were later able to confirm that both Tieu and Nayeri stayed at the motel, KRON reported.

Duong returned to Santa Ana and surrendered. He was cooperating with investigators, Hallock said.

Yes, I noticed that the age the article listed sounded off after I posted that comment on here. Maybe whoever wrote that article was confused and was thinking of the age for the ESL jail teacher, Nooshafarin Ravaghi, since she is 44.
It was just a bit suspicious to me that an ex US Marine needed to take ESL classes in jail and I wondered how he got accepted into the ESL program in the first place.

That makes sense what you said though - that since he was born in Iran (even though he grew up in CA and was a US Marine) he was able to enter the ESL classes.

I also agree that I hope he hasn't left the US yet either! He sounds terrifying and it's so scary to think that people with their backgrounds/previous charges are out on the loose somewhere. I just hope they get caught before more innocent people have to suffer.
