The DCFS “failed miserably in protecting this young boy,” telling reporters that photographs of the youngster — which remain under seal pending a Feb. 27 court hearing — show that he was “beaten from head to toe.”

It's ridiculous how badly DCFS failed in this case and the Gabriel Fernandez case. Two young boys who were beaten and abused for years and nothing was done about it

*Preliminary Hearing for both (@ 8:30am PT) – CA – Anthony Avalos (10) (June 20, 2018, Lancaster; died 6/21/18) – *Kareem Ernesto Leiva (32) (BF) arrested (6/27/18) & charged (6/29/18) & indicted (10/31/18) with capital murder, torture (special circumstance allegation of murder involving the infliction of torture) & 1 count of assault on child resulting in death. Plead not guilty. Held on $2M bond. Maximum sentence 32 yrs to life.
*Heather Maxine Barron (29) (“mom”) arrested & charged (6/29/18) & indicted (10/31/18) with capital murder, torture (special circumstance allegation of murder involving the infliction of torture) & 1 count of child abuse. Plead not guilty. Held on $2M bond. DA may seek DP for both. Possible sentence 22 yrs to life.
8/6/18 Update: The arraignment of a Lancaster mother and her boyfriend facing felony charges in connection with the death of 10-year-old Anthony Avalos was delayed Friday after a judge approved new attorneys for the two. They were scheduled for arraignment on Oct. 3. 10/3/18: Next Prelim Setting/Reset hearing on 11/27, was continued to 12/3. 12/3/18: Judge releases most of Grand Jury transcripts. Next hearing on 1/11/19.
1/11/19 Update: Next Preliminary hearing on 2/27.

2/27/19 Update: Both charged & indicted with 1st degree murder, torture intentionally inflicting great bodily harm on another in order to cause extreme pain. Torture is a felony-level offense that carries life prison sentences & 2 counts of child endangerment resulting in death (originally just 1 count). Both plead not guilty. Next Pretrial conference/Trial setting hearing on 7/15.

"The family of a 10-year-old Lancaster boy who died from abuse filed a $50 million lawsuit Thursday against Los Angeles County Department of Child and Family Services and an outside agency that worked with the department in the case.

The lawsuit alleges that DCFS and Hathaway-Sycamores Child and Family Services had more than a dozen reports of suspected child abuse in the case of Anthony Avalos and yet did not take action to remove him from his home...."

CFS Social worker Janet Nichols says spending time with each child is even more critical in the wake of these child deaths—many of whom had cases out of her Antelope Valley office.

“I know a lot of workers are fearful, you know what if I’m the next one,” Nichols said. “If we check on a kid today that doesn’t mean they are going to be ok tomorrow. That’s something I try to stress to my coworkers. We can’t take it home and we can’t second guess ourselves. We go a lot on intuition and checking with management and brainstorming to see if a kid is safe.”
