MORENO VALLEY, CA — A man who aided his younger brother in trying to cover up the alleged killing of a 16-year-old Moreno Valley girl pleaded guilty Thursday to being an accessory after the fact and was immediately sentenced to a year in jail.

Gary Anthony Shover, 27, of Hesperia admitted the felony count under a plea agreement with the Riverside County District Attorney's Office. Shover was originally charged with first-degree murder and a special-circumstance allegation of lying in wait, but after a 2022 preliminary hearing, a judge dismissed those counts, and the accessory charge was substituted for him alone.

According to sheriff's officials, the brothers were identified as suspects in Briones' disappearance and death following a weeks-long investigation that ended in February 2019, when the siblings were taken into custody without incident at their residence on Grevillea Street, near Old Ranch Road.

Briones was last seen on Jan. 13, 2019, in Moreno Valley Community Park, at the intersection of Cottonwood Avenue and Frederick Street, where she had been visiting with friends and relatives.
Sheriff's Lt. Chris Durham said at the time that Owen Shover, a friend of Briones from Moreno Valley High School, was the last person to have seen her alive.

Durham said investigators spoke to Shover, who allegedly claimed he had dropped Briones at the park, where she was picked up by somebody in a four-door sedan. But Durham said that video images from surveillance cameras in the area conflicted with Shover's story.

I think it's safe to say no jury selection or trial happening this week or month.

Owen is probably working on a plea. Maybe he has some pity for his brother who also was jailed for years, and doesn't want to make him testify against him. Then again, he probably only thinks of himself. I say no deal unless he produces Aranda's remains.

CA - Aranda Briones (16) (Jan. 13, 2019, Moreno Valley, not found) – *Gary Anthony Shover (21/now 27) arrested (2/11/19), charged (2/15/19) & arraigned (3/1/19) with 2nd degree murder & conspiracy to commit a crime. Held without bond. <<Charges dismissed on 9/16/22 & recharged (9/16/22) with a felony accessory after the fact. Plead not guilty. Bond changed to $10K (9/30/22). Out on bond (9/30/22).

11/17/23 Update: Hearings on 11/17/23 were disposed. Request for continuance pursuant to PC 1050 filed. Next trial readiness conference hearing on 3/7/24 @ 8:30am & felony settlement hearing for Owen.
3/7/24 Update: 3/7/24 Update: Gary Shover plead guilty & admitted the felony count under a plea agreement with the Riverside County District Attorney's Office. Shover was originally charged with first-degree murder & a special-circumstance allegation of lying in wait, but after a 2022 preliminary hearing, a judge dismissed those counts & the accessory charge was substituted for him alone & was immediately sentenced to a year in jail. In addition to a year in county jail, Superior Court Judge John Molloy ordered Shover to serve 12 months of probation & pay victim restitution, in an amount to be determined later by the Department of Probation. Owen Shover is being held without bail at the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta & trial proceedings for him are slated to begin on 4/25/24. 4/25/24 Docket update: Owen: Jury trial is not scheduled. Instead a motion hearing for continuance pursuant to 1050PC filed by DA. Felony Settlement conference hearing instead.

Thanks! Change of venue? There was a lot of media at the beginning of this case - but as you say - not much after that.... and it has been 5 years already!!
