Boys Find Human Skull in Arcata

Press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office:

On 12/19/2011 at about 5:00 p.m. Sheriff Deputies were dispatched to the 3100 block of Fickle Hill rd, Arcata, to handle a report of found human remains. The reporting party said that his children found a human skull while playing in the yard. Upon arrival the Sheriff Sergeant confirmed that the skull was in fact human remains.

The father indicated said that his two young boys were playing near the tree-lined area of their yard when they discovered the skull. The boys then carried the remains into the home to show their father what they had discovered. The father believes that it is possible that one of his dogs may have found the skull in the wooded area near their home and brought it to the place where his two boys discovered it.

Do we have any missing people that would be near that area?
I have to research a map to see where Arcata even is.

I do not know how to transfer a map from google, but Arcada CA is up north almost at the border of OR and a few miles in from the coast. Fickle Hill Rd borders Arcada Community Forest.

Arcata is in Humboldt County CA. This is in the Northern coastal portion of California.

My list has five MP's last seen in Arcata:

    John Stewart Campbell (1985)
    Charles Detweilder Allen (1985)
    Joan Penderell Taylor (2003)
    Jon Walker Poschman (2006)
Christine Lindsey Walters (2008) (Listed as missing from Eureka, but her belongings were left in Arcata)

    Human remains found outside Arcata
    The Times-Standard
    Posted: 12/20/2011 02:54:49 PM PST

The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office has recovered human skeletal remains off Fickle Hill Road outside of Arcata.

The sheriff's office got a call at about 5 p.m. Monday from a man who said his children found a human skull while playing in the backyard of their residence on the 3100 block of Fickle Hill Road.

A search of the area for additional remains turned up nothing, and the Humboldt County Coroner's Office came to the scene to take possession of the skull.

Today, search teams from the sheriff's office returned to the area to conduct a more detailed search under the light of day and, at about 11:45 a.m., the teams located additional human skeletal remains. The decomposed condition of the body necessitates forensic testing to determine the age, sex, race and possible cause of death, according to a sheriff's office press release.

The sheriff's office is treating the case of a suspicious death at this point. The sheriff's office asks that anyone with information about the case call 268-2539.

Joann Penderell Taylor seems a good possible. It says she was last seen in a heavily wooded area near Echo Lane and Jacoby Creek Road.

If you put driving directions to that location from Fickle Hill Road it says 18 minutes and 6.8 miles but it's shorter through the woods.

Arcata Community Forest where Christine Walker is said to have taken walks, and Humboldt State University where John Stewart Campbell disappeared from are also nearby,

I would say Christine Walters is the most likely.

The Humboldt County Coroner's Office has identified skeletal remains found off Fickle Hill Road outside Arcata in December as those of Peter John Cain, a 23-year-old who had been reported missing out of Altoona, Pa., in April.

Making a note that John Poschman's remains were located in 2008 and identified in April of 2012. When I searched the forum, this was the only place I found him mentioned. Just posting this as an update.

Article posted by chubby above states that the coroner determined that mr. Cain shot himself. My aunt Patsy has a vacation home in Arcata. Humboldt county is beautiful. It has a distinct "hippie" vibe, and I was surprised at the number of homeless, drifting teenagers and young adults I saw when I was there. I wonder how he ended up there; I hope there is a follow-up story.

PJ was actually a friend of mine. After he graduated, a lot of us kind of lost track of him. He was a wonderful person, gifted songwriter, and honestly, the nicest guy you'd ever meet.

He also had depression, probably not helped by a growing interest in drugs and 60's hippie culture. His leaving was really abrupt, and when I read this I was shocked. God rest his soul.
