LE continues to search in the desert. I'm guessing that's because they think Sheryl was really there, wherever she may be now and whatever they think happened. One likely reason they may think that is because there may be photos of her there on the day Robert says she disappeared, whether on his camera or phone (or on hers if she didn't have it with her). Data associated with the photos could confirm time and place.

Here name is Barbara Thomas. Sheryl Powell is the other woman who went missing the same day, at about the same time (a couple of hundred miles away). Sheryl has been found.

I too believe that the Sheriff is satisfied that she was really out there. It appears they parked on Kelbaker Road and then walked up to the dunes (and it sure looks like the dunes in the background of her photo). He apparently had his own camera (his hobby is photography). You can see the dry lake bed he probably detoured to look at in the satellite image from maps.google (he says he went to photograph "the lake" in the interview I heard - do not have a link to that interview right now).

Yes I have set up media threads before but was holding off because frankly I thought she would be found by now I will go set it up now
Please, can you copy text from the articles so the media thread is searchable? Thank you so much for starting it for us, @oviedo! :)

Still no Barbara? I wonder if she was dropped off earlier. I forget is there a lot of traffic on that main road they were traveling on? So if she stayed by the road she could get picked up.
I'm also curious. Could they have driven deeper into the desert and she got out there?

Does the truck have one of those GPS Trackers on it to see just where it's been?

Yes I always get bogged down in the 10% rule though

May have no connection to the case, but interesting since it's north of the search area. (Call 459 is ARSON)

Media Summary for Colorado River
Date Time Agency Call No Report No Call Type Dispo Location
7/20/2019 11:54:36 AM CR CR192010009 459 356** KELBAKER RD, KEL

Dispatch Call Log – San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department

ETA: If it's the house near that location, how do they already know it's arson? If not, was something burned in the desert, which would be arson?

ETA: This would be Kelbaker Rd right around Kelso Dunes Rd.

Ok, they've updated the code to make is a Commercial Burglary now.

ETA: The website I looked at for the code showed 459 to mean arson. It's supposed to be burglary. *slapping my head* ;)

If it’s a newer truck it probably does have GPS.

Sorry, I've edited my post to say Barbara and meant what I said about her. I meant to say Barbara -- know SP has been found -- but got my wires crossed because have been following both threads.

Agree. I think they are confident she was there. It's hard to believe she hasn't been found yet :(

Drinking alcohol, then going for a hike in that heat? I know we are not supposed to blame the victim, but this is highly irresponsible. Perhaps she wandered off in a stupor? Heat stroke can hit you in a flash. Ambush you like the Devil! Then it's too late.
What if that was her plan? Maybe she was stressed out and wanted to end it doing what she enjoyed?

Naw, I mean, she had it going on. Look at her pics.

This has been discussed upthread. Yes, the alcohol might've contributed to some medical event. But while I wouldn't drink beer on even a short hike, of all forms of alcohol it's the least dehydrating. Her husband claims he was also carrying a gallon of water.

The truck shown in the videos looks to be of a newer age, so should have GPS (I would think). Great question.

They apparently stopped on Kelbaker Road and then walked along a dirt road (not very easy for a big trailer) to the dunes and dry lake bed. I wish the Sheriff would provide a map. People often go way further than searchers may think.

The main road, which she was pretty close to when last seen, is the main north south road through the Mojave Preserve and yes, on a Friday, tons of traffic headed toward Vegas. And some headed south, toward Joshua Tree. Not like bumper to bumper traffic, but more than an occasional car.

The missing beer container (whatever kind it was) is concerning, one would think she'd have dropped it if someone grabbed her - although it's possible they picked it up, too. Seems really really unlikely that she would not stay near the RV and since she had to cross the road to get to it, she may never have gotten to it. My mind goes to her getting hit by a car, driver then decided to do a cover-up. It's a really strange one and very sad. If she in fact is still out there in the desert, then IMO, this is a recovery search. Since she never took the key from under the rock near the RV (maybe she couldn't find it?) and we don't know how long he was separated from her (he makes it sound like it was a very brief time, but...who knows?) it's really hard to know what she would be doing just standing around in the heat near the trailer.

Also possible that key was never under the rock and that's a fabrication (but most people would then walk the brief distance back to their spouse and get the key...)

Temps in the area are around 100F today (and in their hometown, highs are predicted to go to 116-117F, so 100F would not have seemed too hot to them). Today's reports say the search is nearer to the I-40 (but doesn't give a distance).

What's strange to me in this case (and the other missing woman case last week) is that no one seems to want to give specific details about where, exactly, the person was last seen. How is the public going to help if we don't know which roads (exactly) they were on and where they were hiking? If anyone did see something (anything) you'd think searchers and family would want to know. I know they don't want lookie-lou's.

Kelbaker and Hidden Hills Road intersect just south of the area I thought they were in. A mile from there takes them on a walk to the Granite Mountains (really pretty - again, looks a lot like the background of her red cap photo, but I don't see a dry lake, just a dry stream bed).

Hmm just a thought I had. Since they brought in cave searchers today, I wanted to see what kinds of caves were known around the area they stopped. I didn't realize how relatively close that is to Mitchell Caverns. It wouldn't have been much of a hike to any caves on the Kelbaker side of the mountain, it appears.

ETA: Doing a little Google measuring, it is 1 mile from the GPS locations given several times on this thread on Kelbaker Road, to the foot of the mountains where Mitchell Caverns is.

1 mile + 1 mile = 2 mile walk. Also, that mountain is to the east side of Kelbaker, where RT said they were walking.

ETA: changed food of mountains to FOOT

ETA: deleted photo - print screen showed too much private info.

Responding both to your post and previous posts about "irresponsibility." I know a lot of people who have retired out to Bullhead/Havasu/Laughlin. They are so used to the heat that they can power through a day of hard work in a 100F climate (like the one I live in) with no issues. They are out in the sun with a beer in their hand in 117F weather - for half the year. Heat tolerance is a thing. It's very dry, though, so having a beer in one's hand (or water, obviously) is pretty typical. I have a cousin and a good friend (one in her 40's and one in her 60's) who can be out there all day on beer and margaritas. It's the lifestyle of the desert.

A woman went missing out there in about 2003 and there was a 3 or 4 day search. Details were never given, AFAIK, but she was found alive in Kingman (much cooler there). Apparently separated from her partner and took a ride/was offered a lift.

Both my daughter and I have suffered heat stroke out that way and one of the side effects is euphoria, so there's that, too. I try to warn people about Death Valley (people think getting really hot and then drinking water is enough). No fluid can counteract the heat. And the euphoria is real. I was not in my right mind when I finally got out of the heat, at all.

Just a random thought.....

Hubby and I enjoy drinking beer on hot sunny days.

We have a habit of putting our empty cans/bottles back in the case so we can return them for recycling and deposit refunds when the case is full of empties. (In Canada.)

If their beer case has all but one accounted for, it lends some credence to his story of her leaving the vehicle with a beer in her hand.

(Unless she used a travel mug...but fingerprints should help confirm who opened each beer.)

Google Maps

I think these may be the rock formations RT was referring to.
If so I can see how she could just go around a corner and he could lose sight and hearing of her situation..

Edit: These Rock formation images are walking distance off Kelbaker rd. ..."Sweeney Granite mountains area"
If she were to climb and fall between these style rocks, it would be vary hard to find her. You would have to be standing right over the top of her.. jmho

Naw, I mean, she had it going on. Look at her pics.

Beautiful people suffer from depression all the time ;).

I don't think suicide here, but I could get on board with heat stroke for sure. I'm almost 25 years younger than her and felt like I was having a heat stroke after 20 minutes of doing yard work the other day. Drinking water!

But, having heat stroke and collapsing in an area so well hidden they still haven't found her? Unlikely.
