GUILTY Ca - Becky Friedli, 18, Vicki, 53, & Jon Hayward, 55, Slain, Palm Desert, 17 Sep 2006

:dunno: I don't know - this guy is not tweeting anything yet for today, but I will keep it open JUST in case he does. :eek:nline:

I thought he was only taking one day off...

Hey! Didn't the phone pings line up also? If I recall correctly. I'm surprised not too many reporters are interested or covering this "old" case!

Our news stations are sometimes pretty bare bones—they don’t have that big of a staff, so it won’t surprise me if they don’t follow it that closely, unfortunately. Hoping there are more updates throughout the day!

The pings line up and the suspects phones were both off during the time frame of the murder.

Marie Whidmann testifies: She would conduct pro-life workshops. Kathleen Pape was volunteer she worked with @ Sacred Heart Church in Coachella Valley. Whitman had never been to Pinyon Pines. Testifies she did not know Friedli family. Her business card was found near crime scene.

Whidmann is excused from the stand. Judge is now reading aloud notes about evidence found at the scene, including the business card. Two prints found on the card. @KESQ @LocalTwo

Pictures of evidence, including business cards with prints, shown in court. Pape watches intently while Smith seems disinterested.

One forensic technician that analyzed fingerprints on the business card labeled them as non-comparable. @KESQ @LocalTwo #PinyonPines

New witness called forward by prosecution: Dr. Elayne Pope is a forensic scientist. She is professionally trained in burn patterns on the human skeleton and has studied how the human body and tissue responds to heat. She consults in burned body cases. @KESQ @LocalTwo

Dr. Elayne Pope has burned between 150 to 200 bodies for research. Documents variables: environmental factors- indoor vs outdoor makes a difference in heat; the use of accelerants (clothing can retain and hold liquid so length of burn can differ)...

Continued: traumatic injuries (a gun shot would will look different if it happened before the fire vs. afterward because the fat and tissues would change).

In this case, Dr. Pope was asked to look at conditions of the victims' bodies. She assessed the degree of burn patterns present on the victims' bodies, the tissue damage and also the environmental conditions to create a general timeline of events. @KESQ @LocalTwo #PinyonPines

Dr. Elayne Pope, forensic scientist and expert in body burns, testifies with long-winded explanation about the process of a burned body. Fire with an accelerant will start as huge flames consuming the body. Within 1 minute, you get large flames that produce a lot of light & heat.

Continued: Then flames die down. Clothing is a very important variable as it will retain flames much longer than a naked body. Important because the heat exposure will begin to shrink and split the skin, which exposes subcutaneous fat. When heated, the fat liquifies and melts.

Continued: The fat then becomes a fuel source that will prolong and sustain the fire. The fat then melts and pools around the body and can take over as a fuel source. This can prolong the burning process, especially if it is on a solid surface that does not absorb the fat.

Dr. Pope testifies: A body can burn on its own for 2 hours, depending primarily on what the body is on. In this case, the wheelbarrow created a solid surface to collect fat and create a burn source. Says it's a huge variable in this case.

Dr. Pope testifies: In her expert opinion, 18 year-old Becky Friedli's body burned for 18 to 30 minutes and that an accelerant was used. @KESQ @LocalTwo

After tense back and fourth, the prosecution's expert witness, Dr. Pope, and Defense attorney John Dolan agree that the body would have been ignited around 9:45 (roughly) the night of the murders according to her findings.

Robert Pape's defense attorney Jeff Moore now directing questions at Dr. Pope. @KESQ @LocalTwo #PinyonPines

Defense Attny. Moore: "Once flesh is burned, what are the changes you see from burning on the bone?" Dr. Pope: "Heat changes bone from organic material to an inorganic material where it becomes brittle. If it it continues to burn, heat continues to transform the material."

Dr. Pope is discussing her experience training at a crematorium. Those specifics are not particular to this case. #PinyonPines @KESQ @LocalTwo

Dr. Pope: Burn patterns to the head are unique because the scalp has less tissue than other parts of the body. The relative amounts of soft tissue are key to when bone is burned and how it is burned.

Forensic scientist and body burn expert Dr. Pope is still on the stand. Moore is asking her questions regarding her training, background and experience with burning bodies. Most of the discussion is not related to the case. @KESQ @LocalTwo

#PinyonPines triple murder trial: Court is back in session after lunch recess. Dr. Pope is back on the stand. Defense is cross examining. @KESQ @LocalTwo

Defense attorney Jeff Moore is questioning the prosecution's expert witness, Dr. Payne, about the relevance of clothing on a burned body and what Becky Friedli was wearing when she died.

More graphic autopsy photos presented on the screen during discussion of rigor mortis (stiffening of the joints and muscles of a body a few hours after death) and whether it was present in the body. Autopsy says it was not.

Dr. Pope: Final position of burned body is not indicative of starting position. More graphic photos shown. @KESQ @LocalTwo #PinyonPines

Defense attorney Moore: Body-burning expert Dr. Pope was not brought in to analyze the case until 2015. She did not visit the scene, examine the wheelbarrow, nor receive tissue or bone samples. Made analysis off of photos.

The trial for the 2006 #PinyonPines triple murder continues after a brief afternoon recess. The prosecutions witness, an expert in body burns, Dr. Elayne Pope, is still on the stand for cross-examination by the defense. @KESQ @LocalTwo

Defense has no further questions for expert witness Dr. Elayne Pope. She has been excused. @KESQ @LocalTwo

Jury is back in the courtroom

Judge Schwartz reads stipulation to jury. They are cell and home phone numbers used by Becky Friedli, Robert Pape, Cristin Smith, Javier Garcia, Sara Honaker, Sam Gayer and Jackie Muto in September 2006.

Prosecution calls Javier Garcia to the witness stand

Garcia said he knew of Becky Friedli. Identifies a picture of her. Said he knew her in 2006 as "really good friends, best friends."

Garcia: Met Becky in high school. After graduating, grew a little closer and would hang out more often. Go to parties, hang out at Garcia's home, smoke marijuana together, dated Garcia's cousin

Garcia: In September 2006, the closest they were together. Garcia was 17 or 18 years old at the time.

Garcia: Been to Becky's Pinyon Pines home a few times. Garcia was living in Cathedral City at the time.

Garcia: Talked about wanting to have "more than a friendship" with Becky Friedli. Ultimately, both agreed to keep it as a friendship.

Garcia: Would often have phone conversations with Becky Friedli. Identifies phone number as Becky's, doesn't recall if it was cell or home number

Garcia: On 9/15/06 at 12:30 a.m., Becky was giving Garcia a phone call. He visited Denny's where she worked a few times. Would hang out at his house a few times.

Garcia: Becky would hang out with him before and after working the "graveyard" shift at Denny's in Palm Desert

Garcia: On 9/15/06 between 2:30 p.m. and 5:00 .m., both Garcia and Becky called each other about half a dozen times. Garcia calls would be brief, asking how each other were doing

Garcia: On 9/15/06 and 9/16/06, both Garcia and Becky had multiple phone calls between each other. 11 phone calls throughout the day on 9/17/06 up until 5:12 p.m.

Garcia: Pretty normal phone call pattern.

Garcia: Becky used a cell phone to call him at various times. At her Pinyon Pines home, she used her home phone.

Garcia: A few days earlier, he remembers hanging out with Becky, and Becky receiving a phone call from Robert Pape

Garcia: He and Pape grew up in the same area, went to same schools. Would see him from time to time.

Garcia: Was aware of relationship at the time between Pape and Friedli. They had dated in the past.

"They" being Pape and Friedli.

Garcia: With the phone call between Pape and Becky Friedli, it was late at night (somewhere between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m.). Garcia and Friedli were at Garcia's home.

Garcia: Recalls being interviewed by RSO investigator about the case

Garcia: When being interviewed by RSO investigator, he recalled Becky telling her that she had just talked with Pape over the phone.

Garcia: After a few days of communicating with Pape, Becky Friedli and Pape made plans to go hiking

Garcia: In receiving the phone call from Pape, Becky Friedli looked surprise

Garcia: Hung out with Becky Friedli Friday night, 9/15/06 drove him to her house in Pinyon Pines late at night. Picked him up from a party nearby. Hung out at the Pinyon Pines home with other friends.

Garcia: In 2006, Becky was driving a green Scion xB. Picked Garcia up in that car. Garcia spent the night at her home. They fell asleep. Affirms they had no physical relationship, just friends.

Garcia: Woke up Saturday morning and drove back down the hill. Doesn't recall hanging out with Becky on Saturday, but remembers having phone calls with her. Two calls just before 9 a.m. and one call just after 4 p.m.

Garcia: Last meeting with her was on Sunday 9/17/06, met her at a Del Taco in Palm Desert sometime between 3 and 5 p.m. Friedli was babysitting with her friend, and met Garcia with lunch.

Garcia: After lunch, Friedli went back up to Pinyon Pines. Told Garcia she was going back home to get ready for a hike with Pape and Cristin Smith

Garcia: Friedli left around 4:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. to go back up to Pinyon Pines home. Garcia remembers having conversations with Becky between 4 p.m. and 6:40 p.m. on 9/17/06

Garcia: Conversations lasted for a combined 20 minutes, according to phone records. During conversations, Becky told Garcia "she was preparing for the hike." Taking a shower, getting dressed, doing makeup. Nothing about conversation was alarming. Becky didn't seemed scared

Garcia: Friedli told Garcia Pape "would be coming up soon. He's on his way."

Garcia: After 6:40 p.m, Garcia and Friedli didn't speak again.

Garcia: On 9/17/06 at 11:02 p.m. and 11:40 p.m., he tried calling Becky. Knew she was going to work that day. Couldn't get ahold of her.

Garcia: On 9/18/06, Garcia learned about a fire in the Pinyon Pines area. His mother woke him up to a news report about it.

Garcia: Picked up cell phone. Saw messages from Becky's friend, Claire, saying she had not heard from Becky. Garcia then tried calling Becky. No response.

Garcia: After no response, he drove up to Pinyon Pines as quick as possible to see if Becky was okay.

Garcia: Tried calling Becky again just after 8:30 a.m., 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. on 9/18/06. Did not get in touch with her.

Garcia: When looking at phone records, on 9/18/06, Garcia called Pape. Knew he was supposed to be the last one hanging out with her. Called Pape half a dozen times between around 10:30 a.m. and just before 11 a.m.

Garcia: Pape told Garcia he intended on going on a hike with Friedli. Pape found out Becky had invited some Marines to go on the hike. Pape then cancelled hike.

Garcia: Talking about a "collage" of pictures of friends Becky had. The collage included Pape. Never described collage to Pape.

Garcia: Friend drives Garcia up to Pinyon Pines. Garcia goes to friend's house nearby, then goes to Friedli home. When pulling up, he saw first responders, yellow tape around the property

Garcia: Believes he went to Friedli home before making the calls to Pape
