CA CA - Brian Fernandez, 21, & Olivia Gonzalez (dec'd), 20, Los Angeles, 23 Dec 2016

I just found where the Ragged Point info came from:

http://www.ksby.com/story/34160491/plane-searches-for-missing-couples-car-off-the-central-coast

So it's a possible sighting but probably not confirmed. The Cambria stop is the last confirmed location for them since they used a debit card there. Hopefully there is video to back up that it was them at the store...

Answering my own questions about the video:

A detective told her there was video footage of Fernandez using a credit card at a liquor store in Cambria.

Video of him but no mention is she was seen at the store.

Thanks. Does he also have a cell phone? tia

According to his mother he has a phone and he is not answering it:
Fernandez’s mother, Rosa Fernandez, 66, said on Friday her son lives with her in her North Hollywood home. She said her last conversation with Fernandez was at 7 a.m. Dec. 23, and he told her he was going camping, which was not unusual.

“He loves to do that,” his mother said, adding he took with him a backpack, blanket and a tent for the trip.

“He said he would be back by Christmas, which was (last) Sunday. And he never returned — and he never gave us a call,” Rosa Fernandez said. “He always calls me when he decides to come back later, or if it’s night and he’s not home he’ll say, ‘Mom, I’m on my way.’”

Fernandez’s mother said her son has not been responding to family members’ phone calls and texts, and it appears his phone is shut off.

Can cell phones still be pinged if they have been turned off. I wonder when his mother tries to call him if it goes straight to voice mail?

I have read they can, but I don't know that for sure. What I have read on other cases here is the phone can be pinged if it is just turned off, but if the battery was removed or the phone submerged in water/destroyed they cannot ping it. At the very least they should be able to find out the last cell phone towers connected to and figure out if they made it to Big Sur.

Do you think the mother is back peddling now, or MSM badly worded it in the beginning?

"Guzman said she has heard claims from friends of Fernandez that he logged into social media on Wednesday but was not responding to anyone’s messages “which I find pretty weird.”She also said she has never met Fernandez but added her sister had dated him for four months off and on.

“I heard they had a rocky relationship,” Guzman said. A mutual friend told her Gonzalez was planning to “break it off” with Fernandez.

“I was concerned why she left with him on a road trip the next day,” Guzman said. “I don’t think she went against her will because her clothes and makeup were gone.”

Earlier the articles said the text came at 1:00 pm. That's a big difference to get wrong.

I'm wondering if there was another text at 1 PM to a different family member or something? Or the one source that printed 11:40 got it wrong. It is a big gap in time unaccounted for and I cannot find anywhere what time they were at the Cambria General Store.

The time stamp of the video at the store is critical. From that time until 4:00 pm is meaningful.

There has been three stores listed. Cambria Market and Gas Station, The Marketplace in Cambria, and now a Cambria Liquor Store.

Maybe they got liquor at the Cambria store that sells gas and food. 850 Main St. ?

Not sure what you mean by back peddling? I have only seen the one interview with his mother. Guzman is Olivia's sister. Brian's mother did also say she did not know the relationship status of the couple:
The mother said she did not know the current relationship status of her son and his girlfriend.

“They were together, then they were separated,” Rosa Fernandez said. “I don’t know what’s going on with them.”

That matches what her sister says. Seems like they were an on-again off-again couple.

The timeline bothers me because they both told their families they would be home to spend Christmas with them. But they only left for the camping trip on the 23rd. And Big Sur is 6 hours away from LA.

So how do you leave on the 23rd on a camping trip that is 6 hrs away----but intend to be home by the 25th? They were only going for one night?
Seems like a long drive for a one night trip.

That bothers me as well. I realize everyone has different traditions, but in my family Christmas celebrations involves traditions around both Christmas Eve and Christmas Morning. If I told my family I'm going camping 2 days before Christmas but I'll be back for Christmas, it would NOT fly with them if I showed up Christmas Evening. They would be peeved at me, especially if I ran off with an on-again, off again boyfriend I had told them I wanted to break up with again.

Has anyone seen anything about what these two do? Do they have jobs? Are they in college? TIA.

My best friend and I took a road trip from Los Angeles to Big Sur about 6 months ago and when we were driving through the area neither one of us had cell phone service for the majority of the ride. We both have different cell phone service too (At&T and verizon). I'm not surprised they went camping on the 23rd knowing they had to be back for the 25th to celebrate the holiday with family. I have many friends who live in LA that drive up to Big Sur to go camping for a night or two even though its a long drive. Do we know if they've ever gone to Big Sur together before? Or if he goes there often alone?

Curious about the accident scenario. I wonder if her Cellphone going off is due to being out of range and they are still out of range due to accident.

You're welcome. The Big Sur Coast is amazing and is an item on many bucket lists. I think the drive south on Highway 1 gives you the best views. Ragged Point looked too civilized to me to be a camping destination so I searched for camping near Ragged Point. It's a different list then the list in my Post #23. Some Campgrounds register guests just like motels and inns and resorts do. Someone probably could check with a phone call to see if a couple with two large dogs stayed there. Most likely, the first come, first served, campgrounds would not know who was camping. For "off the grid" camping they would need to leave Hwy 1 and head into the hills. I don't know where that might be. Some of the campgrounds were inland and possibly closed following The Soberanes Fire.

Thank you for this info. When I looked up Ragged Point I saw that it is considered part of "Big Sur" and it seems to be a popular tourist destination all on it's own.
Example, Trip Advisor calls it a "thing to do in Big Sur" (lots of gorgeous pictures at link): https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attract...-Reviews-Ragged_Point-Big_Sur_California.html
The Ragged Point Inn also calls itself "The Gateway to Big Sur": http://www.raggedpointinn.com/

It helps tremendously to know that people call that whole area of the California coast "Big Sur"--I'm not from California so I had no idea.

I wonder if they could have ONLY gone as far as Ragged Point, since that is where they were seen?
I wonder if we can we find any previous trips to Big Sur in their social media photos and figure out where they liked to camp or hike on previous trips? Has anyone found Instagram accounts or other social media besides fb?

Two more "off the road" camping areas to add to the list:
Salmon Creek
Estrella Campground

Maybe I'm the only one and I do hope I'm so wrong, but I feel like a murder-suicide could be the case here.

Since reading about the rocky relationship and that she wanted to break up with him (again? on and off couple) before going on that trip etc...well, not having a good feeling.
