Wondering what's going on as the Bench Trial started on 10/25/21. How long can it take for the Judge to hear all the evidence? Do they still call witnesses, and have misc. testimonies for experts? Does the Judge go into a room by self to deliberate? Oh, @Niner, Thank You. I see you included that info. They have witnesses and cross examine the witnesses.

Parking the link to the newspaper here. Couldn't find mention of the trial yet. Local News - Noozhawk.com

Triple-Murder Trial Starts for Pierre Haobsh, Accused of 2016 Slayings of Han Family

Oct. 28, 2021
A triple-homicide trial started this week for the man accused of killing Santa Barbara physician Henry Han and his family in 2016.
[.....]
Santa Barbara County sheriff’s Detective Joel Rivlin testified Thursday about evidence found in the Han family’s home, including the three bodies in the garage.

Prosecutors showed the video taken by sheriff’s investigators walking through the house in the early morning hours of March 24, 2016, and Rivlin described the scenes and pieces of evidence recovered.

The beds in the master bedroom and the child’s room were stripped to the mattresses, and bloody bedding was found in the home’s laundry room and washing machine, according to the video and testimony.

Rivlin testified about finding a bullet in one of the pillows found in the washing machine, and bullet fragments in other pillows in the laundry room.
[.....]
Testimony in the case is scheduled to continue at 8:30 a.m. Friday [10/29/21] in Superior Court.

MOO, I want Justice now. He killed three human beings, one a child, and his only motivation was financial gain. After five and 1/2 yrs., I've forgotten some of the details, but they were morbid details. All three shot in the head. I remember he laid in wait for Dr. Han to get home, and possibly kept the wife and child alive until Dr. Han got there. He wanted to make demands of Dr. Han so it's possible. It was said he was in a business transaction with Dr. Han, but it sure sounded like he was forcing himself into the transaction. I believe he used the victim's own fire arm / gun. He wrapped the bodies in plastic. (see news quote below)

A lot of details in this older news article:
Inside the Han Family Murders - The Santa Barbara Independent
"On Wednesday evening, March 23, authorities discovered all three wrapped in clear plastic and duct taped in the garage of their 4640 Greenhill Way home near Goleta. Each had been shot multiple times, and their official cause of death was listed as “gunshot wounds to the head.”'

[...]

"Until his arrest, American-born Pierre Haobsh lived with his French-born father, Frederick Smith, or Frederick Haobsh, in rented rooms of an Oceanside house..."

[...]

"Nadine Courtney, a beauty blogger and former Newlyweds reality TV star, told the Associated Press via email Saturday that she is Haobsh’s sister."

"A March 25 KGTV San Diego newscast featured Oceanside neighbors, who remembered Haobsh as “off.”

He had shown up at Dr. Han's business:

"On both Monday and Tuesday, Haobsh had reportedly walked into Han’s Santa Barbara Herb Clinic across from La Cumbre Plaza, bypassed the front desk, and said in a brusque, dismissive manner, “Henry knows who I am.” Han was last seen alive at 10 p.m. Tuesday night, and Yu and Emily at 7 p.m. that night, according to Brown."

You can read all about Dr. Han and his family in the article. His story is quite interesting and inspiring. He overcame a very rough beginning and became beloved by his patients. He was a very successful doctor and healed many people.

"As Carlson, Relis, and Bardach tell it, Han was about 12 when doctors, intellectuals, and professionals were rounded up as part of China’s now infamous Cultural Revolution. Han, his older sister, and his parents were exiled to a re-education camp in the rural outposts of western China. The stories vary, but according to Bardach, Han’s childhood was “unspeakable.”...."

MOO, Dr. Han overcame that unspeakable childhood, only for him, his wife, and five yr. old daughter to be murdered by Pierre Haobsh out of greed hoping for monetary gain that might have been all in his imagination.

Here's an article on what happened in court on Friday, 10/29.

Friend Testifies That Pierre Haobsh Confessed Killings, Asked for Help Moving 3 Bodies

Oct. 29, 2021
The triple-murder trial for Pierre Haobsh continued in Santa Barbara Superior Court on Friday with testimony from a man who said Haobsh confessed the killings to him and asked for help moving the bodies.
[.....]
Thomas Direda testified that he knew Haobsh through work, and then they became friends.

Prosecutor Hilary Dozer presented a conversation of text messages between the two men in March 2016 that Direda testified were related to the Han family killings.
[.....]
Direda said he would not go up to Santa Barbara County with Haobsh, as he requested, but offered to call around to see if anyone else would help him.

In response to questioning from the prosecution, Direda said he was scared for his safety and told Haobsh he would help, but did not.

Direda admitted to deleting a message in the text chain because he didn’t want to look like he was helping Haobsh, which investigators discovered from phone evidence.

In that deleted message, he said he would try to help Haobsh any way he could, and planned to contact specific friends to see if they would help.

In the series of text messages shown in court Friday, Haobsh wrote several unanswered texts asking for updates on March 23, and then wrote that he “rented an 18 wheeler with forklift and took care of it all.”

At 7:35 p.m. March 23, Haobsh texted: “Yep. Am screwed. They just found everything. My live's over. Only if I got to it all sooner …” and right afterward, “Like this morning.”

Santa Barbara County sheriff’s deputies responded to the Han family home around 5:30 p.m. March 23 for a welfare check after business associates reported that Han had missed meetings that day.
[.....]
He testified that he called the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department to report the confession in the early morning hours of March 25, and said he was scared for his life in case Haobsh decided to “come after me.”

He also said he talked to his brother, who is a judge and former district attorney, before calling law enforcement, and that he and his brother “agreed it was important to report.”

Haobsh was arrested at gunpoint by law enforcement in San Diego County March 25, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department.
[.....]
The non-jury "bench trial" is being heard by Superior Court Judge Brian Hill, and testimony is scheduled to continue on Monday [11/1/21].

The images of the victims in this horrible crime of murder of a beautiful family, including a little girl, has been said to be emotionally devastating. Let's hope there's no more delays and this really happens this year, and be done and over with all stalling.

Santa Barbara DA Drops Bid for Death Penalty in Han

"...In exchange, Haobsh agreed to waive his right to a jury trial; Judge Hill will act not just as judge but as jury."

[...]

"If Judge Hill finds Haobsh guilty, he’d be sentenced to three terms of life without the possibility of parole. In addition, Haobsh and his attorneys — Christine Voss and Michael Manley with the Public Defender’s office — agreed to allow prosecutors to introduce pretty much all of the evidence and testimony presented during the 2017 preliminary hearing..."

[...]

"Haobsh, who is reportedly both competent and sane, clearly had no interest in anything but delay. The mountain of evidence — ..."
From your link:

As details of the case emerged — of bodies wrapped up in tarps and wrapped with duct tape, of all three victims shot to death in the beds of their Goleta home — and of the daughter shot multiple times in the face — Haobsh would emerge as the poster child for death penalty supporters: an allegedly creepy, calculating killer motivated by greed and profit.

Not much is known about Haobsh. He is reportedly highly intelligent, as well as socially awkward and inappropriate, especially with women.

Haobsh reportedly believed Han was much richer than he actually was and killed him as part of a plan to transfer all the funds in Han’s bank accounts into his own and flee to Mexico, where he reportedly intended to find a Russian bride.

Thanks for the article with the recent bench trial details from court. I didn't know about the witness friend, but I did know that the killer was interested in Dr. Han's CBD product development. MOO, really, the witness friend had a lot of involvement by turning Haobsh onto the idea, even though he decided to not help.

What I find most interesting is Haobsh saying he rented a 18-wheeler and forklift. Wow. Did he really? Was he going to put the bodies in a semi truck? That sounds far-fetched. JMO, He should've realized Dr. Han would be noticed missing right away, but he just left the bodies to be found right away. Not that it mattered, he had already been noticed at the office as a suspicious rude guy-- Haobsh had went to the office two days in a row acting rude and forceful. MOO, sloppy plans and not very bright guy, IMO. Cold, no feelings to kill them. Hope he gets LWOP.

Friend Testifies That Pierre Haobsh Confessed Killings, Asked for Help Moving 3 Bodies | Local News - Noozhawk.com

Habosh said he was a “monster” and confessed to killing three people, Direda said.

Haobsh then identified the people as “Dr. Henry,” his wife and his daughter, Direda said.

Direda knew Han, whom he described as “a friend of mine,” and said they were working together on a skincare line with CBD and trying to synthesize CBD for some of Han’s patients at the clinic.

Haobsh asked Direda for help moving the bodies, specifically Han’s, which was the heaviest, Direda said.

“I didn’t believe him initially,” Direda testified.

I was trying to find more mention of whether Haobsh really rented an 18 wheeler and forklift. I know he took one of the victim's guns, but apparently he had an Arizona gun and a silencer. LE probably obtained the video from Home Depot of the killer buying that poly wrap. Lots of premeditation. In another US state, he'd probably get the DP.

Triple Homicide Case Ongoing in Santa Barbara with Forensic Tech Expert | Davis Vanguard

"...he forensic tech then proceeded to identify the pictures that he took while searching a red Lexus vehicle with Arizona license plates that contained Haobsh’s driver’s license, along with Dr. Han’s driver’s license and iPhones, belonging to the victims, wrapped in aluminum foil."

"Defense Attorney Michael Hanley objected to the way the prosecution was allegedly leading the witness to confirm one of the iPhones—the objection was overruled by Judge Hill."

"One receipt from Arizona showed a purchase of firearms, while another from Home Depot noted the acquisition of 10 ft. of poly wrap. Other receipts confirmed the items purchased and locations of the purchases were also found within the vehicle."

"Furthermore, a “homemade silencer” was found in the trunk of the car next to the spare tire, as noted by the forensic tech,..." BBM

Prosecution Continues Building Case in Han Family Triple Murder - The Santa Barbara Independent

Nov. 1, 2021
In the second week of witness testimony in the case against Pierre Haobsh — the man charged in the 2016 triple-murder of Dr. Henry Han, 57; his wife Jennie, 29; and their 5-year-old daughter Emily — prosecutors called witnesses to testify on fingerprint evidence found at the scene and an interview between Haobsh and Santa Barbara Sheriff’s detectives.
[.....]
On Monday, Dozer and Ladinig called Corey Schroeder, a latent fingerprint analyst from Fresno who has been certified in nearly a dozen counties and worked in the field for 25 years, to review fingerprint evidence he processed from the murder scene. Schoeder analyzed plastic bags, wrapping, and duct tape rolls — including the plastic sheets the bodies were found wrapped with — and found multiple fingerprints that matched Haobch’s prints. Schroeder was able to find fingerprints on the plastic sheets used to wrap Jennie and Emily, but not on the third body, prosecutor said.
[.....]
In the afternoon, Ladinig called on Detective Jeff McDonald, who assisted in the initial interviews after Haobsh was arrested on Friday, March 25, 2016. Prosecutors played back the tapes, which showed a sleep-deprived Haobsh in a red polo shirt being interviewed by McDonald, who slowly switches between small talk and philosophical discussions about the nature of “monsters” during the four-hour interrogation.

Haobsh sat silently, slouched in his chair and leaning back as the video was projected, and he watched himself stammer through answers. He parked his burgundy Lexus in Carlsbad for a day, he said, removing the battery and leaving it unlocked; that could be why the evidence was found inside when he was arrested.
[.....]
Prosecutors will continue with detective McDonald’s testimony, and the remainder of the interrogation tapes, on Thursday morning. Dozer and Ladinig will continue to call witnesses into next week, when the defense will have an opportunity to present its case. The trial is expected to continue until Thanksgiving.

Triple-Murder Trial for Pierre Haobsh Continues with Testimony From Sheriff’s Personnel

Nov. 5, 2021

By Serena Guentz, Noozhawk Staff Writer | @SerenaGuentz
November 5, 2021
9:30 p.m.

The trial for triple-murder suspect Pierre Haobsh continued Friday in Santa Barbara County Superior Court and included testimonies from Detective Jeff McDonald and Sgt. Travis Henderson.

Parts of McDonald’s four-hour interrogation with Haobsh also were shown to the court on Friday.
[.....]
McDonald’s March 25, 2016, interview with Haobsh, which was shown to the court Friday, depicts McDonald trying to get Haobsh to confess to the three murders, which Hoabsh initially denied, claiming he was being framed.

Haobsh later talked about the murders in hypotheticals.
[.....]
During cross examination, public defender Christine Voss pointed out that McDonald had lied to Haobsh multiple times throughout the interview in order to get a confession.
[.....]
During Henderson’s testimony, he and prosecutors went through photos of evidence found in Haobsh’s vehicle, including two guns, two iPhones wrapped in tin foil that were confirmed to belong to Han and Yu, and several power tools.

Surveillance footage from Arizona Firearms on March 19, 2016, also showed Haobsh purchasing what Henderson said was a 9mm Glock handgun, a Ruger .22-caliber Mach III handgun and three boxes of ammunition.

A Home Depot receipt found in Haobsh’s car included the power tools found in the vehicle, and clear plastic sheeting and 3M duct tape, both of which were found in the victims’ residence.

The bench trial being heard by Judge Brian Hill, which does not have a jury, is scheduled to continue with more testimony on Monday [11/8/21].
