Bruce Harrington’s world was turned upside-down more than 30 years ago, when his younger brother, Keith, and sister-in-law, Patty, were brutally beaten to death in their Orange County home by a mysterious killer then known as the Original Night Stalker.

And then, on Wednesday, Harrington spoke forcefully, sometimes passionately, at a press conference where authorities identified Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, as the suspected Golden State Killer — thanks to DNA.

“You were wrong,” he said Wednesday, addressing politicians whom he said hindered the effort to establish the database. “It is time for all victims to grieve and take measure. It is time for the victims to begin to heal after so long,” Harrington said. Of DeAngelo, Harrington said, “He’s now in jail and he’s history.”

His poem sent to two media outlets and the Sacramento mayor December 11, 1977 for those who haven’t seen it.

Excitement’s Crave

All those mortal’s surviving birth
Upon facing maturity,
Take inventory of their worth
To prevailing society.

Choosing values becomes a task;
Oneself must seek satisfaction.
The selected route will unmask
Character when plans take action

Accepting some work to perform
At fixed pay, but promise for more,
Is a recognized social norm,
As is decorum, seeking lore.

Achieving while others lifting
Should be cause for deserving fame.
Leisure tempts excitement seeking,
What’s right and expected seems tame.

“Jessie James” has been seen by all,
And “Son of Sam” has an author.
Others now feel temptations call.
Sacramento should make an offer.

To make a movie of my life
That will pay for my planned exile.
Just now I’d like to add the wife
Of a Mafia lord to my file.

Your East Area Rapist
And deserving pest
See you in the press or on T.V.

original night stalker. but they changed to golden state because ppl would confuse him for Richard Ramirez. he was a night prowler and killer that operated in so cal in 80's

I never followed these cases so I’m clueless of how they’re all tied together. Are they saying he is the “Golden State Killer”, the “East Area Rapist”, and “The Ransacker”? Is there anymore?

im thinking it will be life without. death is very costly here and takes forever and he will die naturally before they can execute him anyways

I actually hope he does die in prison rather than being executed. He deserves to die alone in a cell, forgotten and frightened about what's on the other side, if he's put to death it will be an event with other people around and a pastor called to give him comfort and a last meal and all that jazz. He doesn't deserve it. Let him creak to death in a cell with old age and loneliness his only companions.

Sorry if the above makes me sound like a sadist, but this guy is truly horrible. MOO

Who is the East Side Rapist?

DeAngelo graduated from Folsom High School in June 1964 before enlisting in the U.S. Navy and going to fight in Vietnam, according to newspaper clippings. After returning from the war, he earned an associate's degree in police science from Sierra College and a bachelor's degree in criminal justice with a focus on criminal law from Sacramento State. He then interned with the Roseville Police Department for a short period of time before moving south.

DeAngelo worked as a police officer in Exeter, a city about 10 miles from Visalia, from 1973 to 1976 [many homes ransacked, and a murder —- connected?]

officer with the Auburn Police Department from 1976, when he is believed to have committed his first rape, until his termination in 1979

3 daughters. he was caught stealing a hammer and dog repellent and then didn't show up to his civil service hearing.

So no Australia connection then? Does anyone know why he was dismissed from the police force? He has two children? Thanks guys.

Wondering if his wife and kids wore some of the things he stole?
Maybe when his mother died some of her items were sold or given away and perhaps even recognized, like the fancy dishes for example.
imo, speculation.

It's possible she served quite a few holiday dinners on that fancy Noritake china set!

He named Senator Burton in particular. Probably CA State Senator John Burton. Burton was in the California State Senate from 1996-2004, when Mr. Harrington was advocating for the DNA database.

We may never find Judy. We may never know who likely killed her. This story makes me sick to my stomach. Because this monster, like so many others, likely has other victims. Hidden in ditches. Buried. In oceans and rivers and swamps. Down deep ravines. The rage inside me is burning so hot right now. No one deserves to be murdered. No one.

I wonder what his childhood was like... The cause of divorce...who turned him in and how long they knew.

Im glad they changed the name because years ago I was getting it confused with Ramirez title. So they were right about that.

I credit the books author with coming up with a good name for him and also the renewed interest in the case which led to his arrest.

I get enjoyment just thinking about how the monster must have felt when he was awoke at 2:30am with a knock at the door from LE to arrest him.

He had no idea it was coming and he most likely felt he would go to his grave without getting caught. Hope they do a good job of suicide watch on him. We need to have him be dragged through the trial procedures to make him see what a criminal like him now needs to go through.

Then when its all over let him rot in a cage for many years to come. Suicide is too easy for him. Better watch him now.

they make you work in prison. or go to school. the only ones laying around are the ones locked down and thy are laying around in their cell. in jail however they do a lot of laying around.

This has been a long time coming, and I'm SO glad he's still alive to face the consequences. But, really, what's the worst that will happen to him? California only retains the death penalty as a plea bargaining chip. As punishment for 12 murders he'll live out his days watching TV and lounging around, 3 meals a day and full health coverage.

I'm sure the usual suspects are salivating over the chance to defend him in court.

I wonder what his childhood was like... The cause of divorce...who turned him in and how long they knew.

It sounds like the tip that came in was pretty recent. It will be interesting to learn more about who the tipster was and how they knew anything about him being the possible culprit. Maybe the sketch from the recent special on TV rang a bell with them.

I think once LE got the tip they monitored him and got his DNA likely from his trash without him knowing like someone else thought too.

"According to NBC Los Angeles, a tip from the public that came after increased attention on the case led to DeAngelo’s arrest."

“Neighbours of the suspected Golden State Killer lived have described the 72-year-old as a recent retiree who liked biking and lived with his daughter and granddaughter.

Residents of quiet, middle-class Canyon Oak Drive in Citrus Heights, California, described Joseph James DeAngelo Jr as a 'regular guy' who's only vice was the occasional 'alarming' outburst of cursing.

Next-door neighbor Cory Harvey watched as 30 FBI agents and other investigators combed through DeAngelo's home on Wednesday morning and proclaimed, 'I can't even believe it, I can't even believe it'.

I’m glad the monster is finally in jail where he belongs it is a great pity it never happened sooner.

I read he repaired cranes.

I really wonder what he did for work after he was let go from the PD, if it was a job that took him to other areas of the country that leads to entirely new avenues of inquiry.
