People who may have seen Klemenok or who were hiking off trail in the area of Upper Chilnualna Fall on or after Sunday are asked to send an email to YOSE_Desk_Officer@nps.gov or call Yosemite National Park Dispatch at 209-379-1992.

"Simply knowing where you went and when you were there may help us focus the search, whether you saw anyone or not," the park stated.

Hayden entered the creek. Does that mean he fell into the creek or was attempting to cool off?

He was last seen wearing a red t-shirt, blue swimming trunks and white sneakers with a tan hat and sunglasses.

Swimming I guess.

California's Yosemite National Park has said that hiker Hayden Klemenok is missing and has launched an appeal on social media.

The national park said Klemenok, 24, was backpacking with a group at Upper Chilnualna Falls on July 2, 2023.

"At approximately 2 p.m., he entered Chilnualna Creek near the trail junction, and his whereabouts are currently unknown," the national park wrote in a Facebook post on Tuesday alongside pictures of the hiker.

Hayden bent down to get a drink of water.

If the reporting is correct my question is - if he was just bending down on all fours to get a drink of water when the "water grabbed him" why was he wearing swimming trunks?

Eyewitness accounts indicate Hayden Klemenok got down on all fours by the swift water to get his head wet or a drink before he was swept away.

This poor family. The wait must be excruciating. I hope he is found soon. :(

Noting:

Hayden Klemenok's hiking companions raced after him, according to his father, but could not catch up before he disappeared.

Kevin Klemenok told NBC 7 while they remain hopeful, after a difficult update from Park Rangers, the search has become a recovery mission.

A San Francisco Bay Area native and recent college graduate has been missing for four days in Yosemite National Park. Hayden Klemenok, 24, was backpacking with friends when he fell, was swept into rushing rapids, and vanished over Upper Chilnualna Falls waterfall, according to his family and friends.

The missing man’s older sister, TM, said her brother and his friends had hiked to the same location on Saturday without any problems. Klemenok and fellow backpackers all dipped their hands and hats into cold flowing water Saturday, she said. The difference between safety and danger changed in an instant Sunday.

I can see that happening, thank you.

Horrible for Hayden and the people he was hiking with. There was absolutely nothing they could do to help him :(
My thoughts are with his family and companions.

Family members have taken time away from work to help with the efforts underway to find Klemenok, according to a [fundraiser] created by friends of the family. As of Thursday morning, nearly $45,000 had been raised to support the family.

"This [fundraiser] is meant to help ease the pain of the costs of all the expenses and struggles they are currently facing," the fundraiser said. "The efforts of law enforcement, the national Park Rangers, and Yosemite Search and Rescue Team are greatly appreciated; however, the outcome of Hayden's whereabouts are presumed devastating."

[...]

"Hayden is a truly extraordinary young man who just recently graduated from SDSU with such a bright future ahead of him," the [fundraiser] page said. "We are all praying for a positive outcome."

Thanks for the info but just to clarify the photo with the article is Upper Yosemite Fall (the info says that but you might miss if it you read it quickly). Where he went in was above Upper Chilnualna Fall which is still very dangerous but is not the sheer and long drop that Yosemite Falls is. (stock photo of Chilnualna Fall attached).

Appreciate the diligence.

Nothing new, sadly. Still missing. :(

Officials urged visitors to contact Yosemite Park dispatch if they have seen Klemenok or were hiking near the area he was last seen on Sunday.

“Simply knowing where you went and when you were there may help us focus the search, whether you saw anyone or not,” the park’s post said.

“They were leaning down to dunk their heads in, and their hats in to cool off. When within a split second it sounds like Hayden slipped. One of his hands, or one of his knees slipped into the water, into the current,” said McKinnie.

“On Sunday morning, we were notified that Hayden had been located. Due to the complexity of his location, it took another 24 hours to formally recover him. While a few further steps remain in the investigation, Hayden’s cause of passing is presumed to be an accidental drowning,” the family posted on Facebook.

The family said memorial service plans are in the works.

His sister said he was a recent graduate of San Diego State and a lifelong athlete.
