speaking from my experience night time will be the worst for the child. 20 years later when it is dark and all is quiet, when all the activity of the day is not there to fill her mind is when the memories sneak up unexpected.
Or in the middle of the day when everything is seemingly fine. A smell or a color or a cooler they put beer in. A tree. The smell of cedar water.
Or 30 years later when your own child wants to go outside to play or go to a sleepover with the kids from school or when you are babysitting your nephews and someone looks like the creep and you freak the heck out, and the kids wonder what's wrong and even you aren't sure.
