Body ‘surfaced’ from ground at North Highlands home, official says

NORTH HIGHLANDS, Calif. (KCRA) — Deputies are investigating after a buried body was found at a North Highlands home, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department said Thursday.

The body was found Tuesday afternoon in the backyard of a home in the 6200 block of Dundee Drive. The body “had surfaced from beneath the ground” and was found by workers renovating the home, Sgt. Shaun Hampton said in a news release.

The homeowner who did not want to be identified said he had to evict the previous tenants because they hadn’t paid their rent for the past year. After going into the home, he found it in deplorable conditions.

While cleaning the home and hauling away seven trailer loads of trash, workers spotted what appeared to be part of a leg sticking out of the ground.

Patrol deputies and homicide investigators examined the bones, which apparently had been buried but had become exposed, and determined that they were human, according to a Sheriff’s Department news release. Investigators spent nearly two days at the site and were able to unearth an entire skeleton. They also checked the rest of the property and determined there were no other remains, the news release said.

The remains are not believed to be ancient, and the matter is being investigated as a suspicious death, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

A California man was arrested on Friday in the 2015 killing of his housemate, whose remains were found by construction workers in December in the home’s backyard, authorities said on Saturday.

Michael Christopher Sager, 22, was arrested and booked on murder charges after construction workers found the human bones in a shallow grave on Dec. 26 while renovating a North Highlands home, about 12 miles northeast of Sacramento, police said in a news release

Investigators believe Sager stabbed his housemate to death in the summer of 2015 after they got into a verbal argument. He then allegedly buried him in the backyard and eventually vacated the home. No one filed a missing person report for the victim, whose name was not released at this time.
