Tuesday, June 28th:
*Final Jury Selection begins (Day 2-for Paul only) (@ 9am PT) - CA - Kristin Denise Smart (19) (missing May 25, 1996 while walking back to her dorm from a off campus frat party at Cal Poly, reported missing on May 26, 1996, San Luis Obispo, still missing; legally declared dead on May 25, 2002) – *Paul Ruben Flores (19 @ time of crime/44/now 45) arrested (4/13/21), charged (4/14/21) & arraigned (10/20/21) with 1st degree murder. Plead not guilty. No bond.
*Ruben Ricardo Flores (55 @ time of crime/80/now 81) arrested (4/13/21), charged (4/14/21) & arraigned (10/20/21) with accessory to murder after the fact. Plead not guilty. $250K bond. Bond was lower to $50K. Has posted bond (4/22/21), out of jail.
Trial set to begin with final jury selection starting on 6/27 thru 7/1 for Paul & for Ruben undetermined. Trial will not begin on 7/6/22, but moved, not date set. Trial has been moved from San Luis Obispo County to Monterey County in Salinas. For 2 juries: 12 jurors & 8 alternates.

6/27/22 Monday, Final jury selection (Day 1) (for Paul): Jury selection for Paul’s jury is expected to start today. Around 270 jurors are in his pool. Judge & attorneys in chambers while prospective jurors fill out another form to determine whether they have legitimate reasons to be dismissed. The morning session has already seen more than 120 jurors excused for hardship. Just 5 are being called back for more questioning @ 10:30am. Five prospective jurors spoke before the lunch break to express that their religious or personal convictions would prevent them from begin impartial. Attorneys expected to question them further at 1:30pm. 3 jurors were excused for practical reasons (moving out of state soon) & 5 additional jurors were dismissed after sending notes to the court last week. Judge O’Keefe read a list of 80 witnesses who may be called to testify in this case. None of the prospective jurors had any personal conflict with or connection to those witnesses. A peremptory challenge is a dismissal of a prospective juror without needing to state a reason for dismissing them. The judge ruled that each side will get 20 peremptory challenges. Those 7 seats were then filled with new prospective jurors. After being questioned about their ability to serve, one additional juror was excused by the court.

Flores Trial Rescheduled to Begin July 18
Opening statements in the murder trial for Paul and Ruben Flores have been rescheduled to begin July 18 in Monterey County Superior Court, 12 days after its original July 6 date.

6/28/22 Tuesday, Final jury selection (Day 2) (for Paul): Today’s hearing was delayed by 45 minutes because a significant number of prospective jurors did not return to court this morning. While it’s being sorted out, voir dire has resumed. One potential juror was excused this morning after expressing that she could not be impartial. The prosecution then moved to accept the jury panel as it is. Sanger did not accept the panel, and used an additional peremptory challenge to excuse another juror. The empty seats were filled by 7 new prospective jurors, and both sides began the voir dire process again. After a lengthy discussion with Paul Flores, the defense also agreed to accept the jury panel. After further questioning, the court excused two prospective jurors who disclosed that they may have personal biases. The prosecution then moved to accept the jury panel as it is. After a lengthy discussion with Paul Flores, the defense also agreed to accept the jury panel.
