Here I go with the long shots. I see East Coast as California, Oregon and Washington. As I'm not from the US, please correct me if I am wrong.

Keep up the good work on missing folks, but maybe brush up on US geography.

California, Washington, and Oregon are our major West Coast states, on the Pacific Ocean.

Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida & a few others are East Coast states, on the Atlantic Ocean.

That train likely passed through major rail yards in Chicago or Kansas City on the way West.

Yes why on Earth was I looking at West Coast states? My gosh I am a dummy! Back to the drawing board I go!

Ok this is following my geography lesson, some Breakfast and now my stupid brain is working.
All the following men are listed as having tattoos, which could explain a few things…

This case doesn't seem to appear on the ME's LA County site even when I put in the case number, but the Namus is active and last updated more than 12 months ago. If they received the DNA tests back surely this would have at least given them Male/Female?

What am I missing? Is this a body, a skull only, a skull among other partial remains but no torso? I'm having trouble visualizing these remains.

Puzzling because soft tissue remaining but not all parts in one location, leads me to believe dismemberment, maybe? Generally the pelvic bones will indicate gender so I’d say they were not part of the remains. Soft tissue means it was a more recent death versus long term skeletal remains. Plus the broken left jaw would indicate violence. Did someone who was left handed hit them, swing a bat or pipe at them, to cause such an injury?

If the train originated from the east coast, was it in an area known for seasonal workers? What was growing in the southeast US in June. Not likely to be any harvesting going on in the northeast that early in the season.

Who had access to the train cars? Is there a homeless population near a train hub where other partial remains were found?

Yes, exactly what I was thinking. Maybe we should start by looking at east coast UIDs and MPs whose profiles show partial remains were found (i.e., torso, limbs, hands) around that time frame. Especially ones found in train cars or near train tracks, if any. And good investigative questions, btw!

That train likely passed through major rail yards in Chicago or Kansas City on the way West.

This UID was found in Nov 2007 near tracks in East Chicago, IN. It'd be nice to have details about the train's route.

ETAsk - Does NamUs do automatic comparisons of DNA amongst UIDs with partial remains or is that only done by request?

The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs)
Inventory of Remains -
Head not recovered
One or both hands not recovered

Condition of Remains -
Not recognizable - Partial skeletal parts only

Now I’m rethinking that left jaw bone injury. If the damage is on the victims left jaw, then the perp would need to be right handed if attacking from the front. If attacking from behind, then the perp could be left handed. Just thinking, I could be wrong too.
