Marina Habe’s body was found on New Year’s Day, 1969, by a dog. The body had been tossed to the bottom of a ravine off Mulholland Drive, and when police arrived, the dog’s owner said he wanted to be sure his name got in the paper.

Every detail of Marina’s murder and the time on either side of it left some sliver of absurdity. She was 17, coming home alone late at night from a date, got to her driveway and then, as her mother watched from a window—awakened by the sound of a racing engine and not knowing whether the man standing beside her daughter’s car was friend or foe—disappeared into another car. The coroner said she was held for a day, fed, raped, and stabbed

Posted this new link on Reet Jurvetson's thread as there may be a connection between the murders of these two women.

Habe had been home from the University of Hawaii visiting her mom during her Christmas holidays when she was abducted.

She had been out that evening with a friend and returned home at 3:30 a.m. when her mother was awakened by the sound of a vehicle with loud pipes.

Hardt looked out the window and saw a man run toward a black car that appeared to be a sedan. She heard him yell "Go" and saw him jump into the passenger side of the vehicle. It was driven away at high speed by another person.
Habe's body was found on New Year's Day by a couple walking by. She had been killed within the previous 24 hours.

The autopsy report says she died from "multiple stab wounds of neck and thorax." Her carotid artery had been cut.
This was the same manner in which Jurvetson was killed.
The spot where Habe was dumped was also less than a kilometre from where the nude body of 19-year-old Rose Tashman was found on May 19, 1969.
She had been raped before being strangled with a piece of wire and dumped in a ravine near Mulholland Drive, according to media reports quoting the detectives at the time.
The San Fernando Valley State College student's car was found with a flat tire on the inbound lane of the Hollywood Freeway, near the Highland Ave. offramp.

That is such a sad story. 157 times. Obviously a crime of raging passion. That's something that intimate driven killers are likely to do. Sad story.

10 Famous People Who Lost Their Loved Ones To Unsolved Murders
On the New Year’s Day of 1969, Marina Elizabeth Habe’s dead body was discovered at the bottom of a ravine. She was just 17 when she was murdered and discarded like garbage down the ravine. She was the daughter of the famous Hungarian and American writer and newspaper publisher Hans Habe and actress Eloise Hardt.

The day prior to the murder, Marina had gone on a date with a family friend John Hornburg. Her mother last saw her when he left for her date and heard her with a man at around 3.30 a.m. in the morning. The next morning she went missing and it was only after two days that her body was found. There were multiple stab wounds to the neck and chest.

The police originally believed that her murder might have been a random kidnapping carried out by biker and dope-dealer nicknamed “Spanky.” But there was not much evidence to corroborate the belief. Investigative journalist Maury Terry had also pointed out that Marina’s death may have been linked to the Manson Family. The Manson Family is a community that was established by Charles Manson. Their main objective of the members of the community was to carry out murders under the guidance of Charles. The Manson Family is well-known for the murder of actress Sharon Tate. The link between Marina’s murder and the Manson Family came up because her body was discovered in the area where the Manson Family was active at that time.

The case is still unsolved due to lack of evidence. But considering the type and style of stab wounds inflicted on her body, the police strongly believe that someone from the Manson Family was responsible.

Did Charles Manson Have 4 More Victims? 'There's an Answer There Somewhere,' Says LAPD Detective (with clip)

"...Manson and his followers were convicted of nine killings, many still wonder: Did the savagery end there?

Questions have persisted for decades about some suspicious area murders and whether their deaths were linked to the notorious clan. These unsolved mysteries persist almost 50 years later and two years after Manson’s death at age 83 and are explored in the latest episode of People Magazine Investigates. Titled “Who Killed Jane Doe #59?,” the episode airs Monday, Feb. 25 at 8 p.m. ET on Investigation Discovery. (An exclusive clip is shown above.)...

Eerily, Jurvetson’s body was discovered on the same stretch of road as the remains of 17-year-old college student, Marina Habe another victim of multiple stab wounds. Habe, who was home for the holidays, disappeared from her West Hollywood driveway after a night out with friends on Dec. 30, 1968. Her body was discovered on New Year’s Day...."

Marina Elizabeth Habe was the daughter of Hans Habe and Eloise Hardt. She was a student at the University of Hawaii home on vacation when she was murdered in Los Angeles, California while returning home from a date.

She may have been slain by members of the Manson family. Her body was discovered on New Years Day 1969 in dense underbrush off Mulholland Drive, 100 feet west of Bowmont Drive. She was found with contusions in her eyes, slashes to her throat and heart, burned, raped and nude except for a shoe.

Los Angeles County coroner Thomas Noguchi recorded that the teenager bled to death. Habe's body exhibited contusions in the eyes, slashes to the throat and heart, burns, and was nude except for a single shoe. She had been raped according to author Ed Sanders. A Los Angeles Times article disputes this conclusion.

Her father, Hans Habe (February 12, 1911, Budapest – September 29, 1977, Locarno) was a Hungarian and American writer and newspaper publisher. From 1941, he held United States citizenship.

California had a number of serial killers operating in 1968 and 1969. The Zodiac was one. Another was Charles Manson. Yet another (although only known positively to be in California in June and July 1969) was John Collins of Michigan. Each of them was known to murder women using a knife.

In the middle of reading a memoir by "Sonic Youth" singer Kim Gordon and was surprised that she referenced Manson, but also her brilliant but suffering from schizophrenia brother, who used to date Marina Habe!

Did she say in her book whether her brother was questioned by police? Was he dating Marina at the time of her death or had they broken up before then?

So she brought a change of clothes for the date. I'm assuming evening wear was one of those mini dresses Sharon Tate was often photographed in at clubs.

Here's from the book "The Family, the Story of Charles Manson," page 127:

John Hornburg told the police this: "That among other
things they visited a club on the Sunset Strip; that after
the evening Miss Habe returned with him to his parents' home, changed from evening dress into Capri pants, a white turtleneck sweater, brown coat and drove home
in her car."

I'm trying to read everything I can find on it and after that I'm going to read up on the Jurvetson murder. My gut feeling is Habe wasn't killed by a member/s of the Manson family.

It looks like her mother's old house is no longer there, a fire station (taking up multiple lots) is where 8962 Cynthia St would be. On the other side are a few bungalows, it's possible address was changed. I would like to see what mother could see from house. Did she actually see her daughter outside? Some reports sound like she only heard noises? Could her daughter been taken before reaching the house? One report said brake was so tight that a female could not have pulled it (did she drive a sports car?)

''Neither Habe nor Jurvetson appeared to have been sexually assaulted or robbed, according to the police.
Both women were fully dressed.''

Reet Jurvetson disappeared in late fall of 1969. Her body was found on the same stretch of road where Marina's body had been discovered on 1 January 1969. However, Reet was not identified until 2015. Earlier accounts refer to her as Jane Doe #59. Her murder remains unsolved as well.

Another potentially connected and unsolved case is the November 1969 double murder of James Sharp, 15 and Doreen Gaul, 19.

A possible person of interest or suspect in Reet Jurvetson's murder was John "Zero" Haught. John was associated with the Charles Manson "family" and died from a gunshot to the head supposedly during a game of Russian Roulette.

All of these murders occurred in the same time frame and close geographical area of the known Manson murders. Coincidence?

Perhaps Leslie Van Houghten could provide some insight into these cold cases.
