4/9/20 Update: Breaking: Almena will likely be released from jail. Because of coronavirus pandemic, Judge Trina Thompson is recommending that Almena be released on electronic monitoring. His retrial still set for July 6th. Judge Thompson called for a teleconference hearing on 4/10. Teresa Drenick, a spokeswoman for the Alameda County district attorney’s office, said prosecutors will seek a specific order that Almena have no contact with the victims of the case or any witnesses. Thompson is requesting that Almena be placed with Leaders in Community Alternatives, an Oakland-based company that provides services for electronic monitoring and house arrest. Thompson’s request is a reversal from another order last week, when she declined to grant the defense’s emergency motion to release Almena due to coronavirus concerns. Thompson has postponed Almena’s retrial until July 6, also in response to the growing pandemic. And 4/1 hearing was moved to 5/1. Bond was reduced on 4/17/20 to $150K. Expected to post bond.

Are there courts "open for business"? I doubt it, but that's just MOO.

Could be a video teleconference... Judge was supposed to decide on releasing him yesterday.

From yesterday:
Due to the ongoing release of inmates associated with concerns over COVID-19 and the spread of the disease in jails, Almena will be allowed to shelter-in-place with family in Lake County. A judge ruled he will have to use an ankle monitor.

During a telephonic court appearance with Judge Trina Thompson of Alameda County Superior Court, Almena’s attorneys provided proof that Almena had a “verifiable and acceptable” location where he could shelter-in-place while under electronic monitoring.
Derick Almena, awaiting retrial in Ghost Ship Fire, to be released on $150K bail

Thank you for that article @MsMarple - can you access Alameda County court site? Is there another future court date for him since the article didn't mention one? I have his trial starting on 7/6.

TIA! :)

Looks like he got released....

Defendant in Ghost Ship fire released from jail over coronavirus fears

May 4, 2020

DUBLIN, Calif. —
A man facing a second trial after a fire killed 36 partygoers at a San Francisco Bay Area warehouse he’s accused of illegally converting into a cluttered artists enclave was released from jail Monday over coronavirus concerns.

Derick Almena, who’s been behind bars since 2017, was released after a court hearing by phone, the Alameda County sheriff’s office said. He will be under electronic monitoring while he waits for a new trial.
[.....]
At least 35 confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been reported at the Santa Rita Jail where Almena was held. According to his attorneys, a report by jail medical staff said Almena’s psychological and physical health were in jeopardy.

Almena was released in the rural community of Upper Lake, where his wife and children live. He is banned from contacting relatives of victims or witnesses. He can’t leave home unless a court gives written approval, and any violation can send him back to jail, the Mercury News reported.

Almena posted $150,000 bail last month, and officials verified where he is staying Monday, the last step for his release, the newspaper reported.

Hey all. Just want to chime in to maybe give you all a little solace and hopefully not offend anyone, but imo, Lake County sucks. Clear lake is pretty, but very stinky. So I hope he's next to the lake and it smells bad.
