Human Remains Found in Joshua Tree
A visitor found partially buried human remains in Joshua Tree National Park, and an investigation into the suspicious death was underway, sheriff's officials said Sunday.

The visitor found the remains Saturday morning near Big Horn Pass Road and Park Boulevard, about six miles south of Twentynine Palms, and alerted a park ranger who then contacted the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, according to a news release from a park spokesman.

"Due to the suspicious circumstances regarding this incident, the Central Homicide Unit assumed the investigation," said Sgt. Ben Ramirez.

The remains have not been identified, he said.

Seems like the remains were closer to the side of the park that backs up to Twentynine Palms. Twentynine Palms has four demographics: military (most folks are military), conservative country ppl, methheads/drugaddicts/drunks, and passive hippie types.

There also are many visitors to the park from all over the world. If the person was not from the local community then it might be difficult to ID them (especially if they are foreign).

This case makes me think of Erin Corwin. Maybe something similar happened. RIP. We also have had some missing women in the high desert, but not local to Yucca Valley/Joshua Tree/Twentynine Palms. This doesn’t mean much as the Mohave is just one big area that many people from surrounding areas of the desert pass through.

Posting some quotes from the above links:
Curtis Krueger, 30, was arrested Wednesday in connection with the death of a man whose body had been found in a shallow grave, the news site Patch first reported. Newsweek confirmed that Krueger is a Marine Corps communications officer assigned to Combat Logistics Battalion 7, a unit that falls under 1st Marine Logistics Group.

The Marine officer was arrested along with his wife, Ashlie Stapp, according to the Murrieta Police Department, which said the couple had been under investigation since June 2 when the body of Henry Stange, 54, was discovered in a “partially covered” grave in Joshua Tree National Park in California.

A law enforcement source told Newsweek that Krueger’s government computer and military-issued e-tool, a foldable shovel used for digging combat fighting holes and filling sandbags for base reinforcement, was collected by law enforcement officials. Stange’s body showed signs of blunt force trauma to his head.

The two suspects were taken to the Cois Byrd Detention Center in French Valley; bail was set at $1 million for each, county records show.

Stange lived in the 24000 block of New Clay Street, near Kalmia Street. Investigators did not specify when he went missing, or whether he was killed at his home. A possible motive also was not disclosed, and there was no word on how the suspects were connected to Stange.

Krueger was arrested by San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies near the south entrance to the Twentynine Palms Air-Ground Combat Center. Stapp was taken into custody on the campus of Copper Mountain Community College in Joshua Tree.

Marine Lt. Adam Miller told City News Service that Krueger enlisted in April 2005, beginning his career as a private, and continued up through the non-commissioned ranks until he qualified for officer candidate school.

He earned his lieutenant's bars in 2015 and has been stationed since June 2017 at the Twentynine Palms base, where he is a communications officer assigned to Combat Logistics Battalion 7, Combat Logistics Regiment 1. Neither Krueger nor Stapp has documented prior felony convictions.

Henry Stange

A loved one posted a tribute to Henry Allen Stange on Facebook. Judy Stange Gardner wrote on Facebook of Stange, “He was a son, a father, a brother, a cousin and a friend to many. He was murdered the last week of May, his remains were found in the desert- near Joshua Tree, in California. Our lives will never be the same. If you know anything, please contact Murietta PD. Henry Allen Stange.”

Everyone wasn’t his fan, however. A web page online is devoted to criticizing Stange and contains photos that are supposedly of his modest living arrangements. “This site is dedicated to expose the lies that Henry A. Stange (WA6RXZ – KG6EBF) has been broadcasting over the past two years on 147.435MHz about his supposed lifestyle,” it reads. “Remember his claims of living in ‘god’s country’ just houses away from Hollywood notables such as Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger?” The page then goes on to show photos supposedly showing a modest living environment. There is also an online poll devoted to whether Stange would get his kids in a divorce. One choice was given as “Don’t Care, Hope He Dies In A Fire.”

A 30-year-old U.S. Marine and his girlfriend are accused of killing a Murrieta man the girlfriend was also dating. The man's remains were found on June 2 in a shallow grave at Joshua Tree National Park

Twentynine Palms Marine & woman arrested in boyfriend's murder

Would military be the ones filing the charges? I wonder what was missing that the DA wanted/needed?

it sounds like they don't have enough evidence so they were released "2 day no complaint" this also happened with marlene santillan's accused murderer. I wonder the motive.

Snipped...
...Krueger and his girlfriend Nicole Ashlie Stapp were first arrested in August and freed from jail. Naval Criminal Investigative Service aided in the investigation, and Krueger was arrested for the second time on Dec. 13 on Camp Pendleton, California.

Krueger currently is detained at the Cois M. Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta, California, and is scheduled for felony settlement conference on January 15 — a possible motive still has not been reported, according to NBC.

He is being held on a $1 million bail.

the first link confirms that they let them go lacking evidence pending further investigation.

Wow. Thanks for the updates.

Lack of evidence? What about the army shovel that folds up? Not too many people have those unless you are in the military or like military surplus.

Couldnt they get DNA off of the shovel handle?

Im hoping they are doing more DNA testing on items like that. They cant just give up if they think they have the right people responsible.

Seems doubtful that she wasn't involved (AS)-was arrested initially, CK rearrested alone. Perhaps because CK did actual murder, and they felt they couldn't convict him without her testimony (obviously my speculation) Sounds as if there was loads of evidence-ie
"Stapp later told investigators that Stange was gasping for air as they loaded Stange into the bed of Krueger’s truck. They eventually drove Stange to Joshua Tree, where Krueger dug the grave and both of them buried Stange, Stapp said...
On Aug. 23, investigators overheard Krueger and Stapp talking on the phone about the killing of Stange. They were arrested Aug. 29. Stapp, after being told of her constitutional right to remain silent, spoke with investigators. Krueger declined to give a statement and requested a lawyer, the affidavit said."

Odd that they were released in late Aug, CK rearrested in Dec.
Stange, disturbing, dark case.
This seems to be the most recent news report.

That's odd. How do they go from each being held on a million dollar bond to no charges and released? :confused:o_O

We had a boy intentionally locked out of his house in the desert heat here and the same court did the same thing. The abusive parents got out on bail and fled to Mexico which isn’t very far.

We only have 3 Sheriff’s that patrol our high desert and no formal police department. As a result many ppl have a Wild West mentality of taking care of problems themselves. I had a robbery once and called 911 to get a response of “is this an actual emergency?” Bc no one was actually available to help and well if they were they couldn’t get there in time. So I own a gun for that reason (and I don’t like guns I have to say).

I suppose maybe the judge thinks that this couple executed some “neighborhood justice” on this poor guy and didn’t feel as much of a need to throw the book - or there’s a reason (I can’t ascertain as to why) the court puts these ppl back on the streets. It’s so messed up here.

"A second person was arrested on Wednesday, April 17, in connection with an investigation into the death of 54-year-old Henry Stange, a Murrieta resident, who was discovered in June 2018 in a shallow grave on the San Bernardino County side of Joshua Tree National Park.

Nicole Ashlie Stapp, 27, was arrested by the Murrieta Police Department and was transported to the Cois Byrd Detention Center and booked for Accessory after the Fact. Stapp's bail was set at $500,000 and she is currently being housed at the Indio Jail.

Curtis Krueger was arrested in connection with the same investigation in January and remains in jail.

Krueger from Twentynine Palms and Stapp, who was living in Joshua Tree, were arrested first arrested in August of 2018 on suspicion of murder and conspiracy in connection with the death Stange, but were released days later.

At the time, Riverside County District Attorney's Office spokesman John Hall told City News Service that the case is "under review'' but no criminal complaint was pending. He would not elaborate on the purported defects in the Murrieta Police Department's case.

There was no further information from the Murrieta Police Department as to why Stapp was arrested on Wednesday.

Strange resided in the 24000 block of New Clay Street, near Kalmia Street and investigators did not specify when he went missing, or if he was killed at his home."
