GUILTY CA - Paul Pelosi, the speaker’s husband, violently attacked after assailant broke into their SF home, Oct 2022 *arrest*

DePape testified today.

The defense said DePape never intended to harm either Nancy or Paul Pelosi. After breaking into the home and jarring Paul Pelosi out of bed, DePape said he felt comfortable around him.

The defense has said DePape's plans were to use Nancy and Paul Pelosi to lure a person the government has labeled "Target 1."

That person has been identified by local prosecutors and the defense, for which she testified Tuesday, as Bay Area scholar and University of Michigan professor Gayle Rubin, a leading academic in feminist theory and queer studies.

DePape rattled off a long list of grievances — many of which regularly echo through far right circles — that led to the night he broke into the Pelosi home.

He said that before his arrest, he spent six hours a day looking for political commentary on YouTube.

"Everything was a lie coming from the press," said DePape, wearing a zip up blue-gray cardigan and tan khakis.

In emotional testimony that lasted for more than an hour, DePape offered detailed insight into his motivations that evening in October, which he described as part of a bigger plan to end corruption in the United States.

He wanted to speak to Pelosi about Russian involvement in the 2016 election, he said, and planned to wear an inflatable unicorn costume and upload his interrogation of her online. Instead, in the early hours of 28 October 2022, he found 82-year-old Paul Pelosi and bludgeoned him, prosecutors say.

From this article: The 43-year-old allegedly told a San Francisco detective after his arrest that he wanted to hold Nancy Pelosi hostage. So since he's admitted that Nancy was his target how can his defense claim that he wasn't going after her in her official capacity??? He told Paul that she was the leader of the pack.

From the above article: Closing arguments are slated for Wednesday and the deliberations are expected to begin later that day.
DePape wasn't out to kidnap Nancy Pelosi or do harm to Paul Pelosi, the defense maintains, but to use them to reach a person the prosecution calls “Target 1.” That person has been identified as Bay Area scholar and University of Michigan professor Gayle Rubin, a leading academic in feminist theory and queer studies.
That was another non-believable argument. If Gayle Rubin is your intended target, why go to the Pelosi's house rather than her Bay Area residence???

From the above article: DePape’s federal sentencing date is set for May 17, and he still faces charges at the state level in California. He has pleaded not guilty to state charges including attempted murder, burglary and assault.

Hopefully, he'll change his plea to guilty so the State doesn't have the expense of a jury trial.

I'm still disgusted at the rumors about Pelosi being a gay man. I hope Mr. Pelosi sues every one of them for defamation.

So many jumped on that "blame the victim" wagon, which was disgusting.

And, all for political reasons. I think it's awful how low our politics have become. When we can't even condemn an attack on an elderly man without trying to blame it on him--because of who he's married to--we're really in trouble.

What has happened to us?

BBM. Good question!

I think the "dark" money that has been allowed to advance political candidates is to blame. There are way too many politicians being financed by too many greedy corporate CEOS with agendas.

These people getting some members of the public riled up with outrageous conspiracy theories and rampant, dangerous paranoia need to be stopped. Civil lawsuits don't seem to be helping. It's a menace that's causing too much violence and unnecessary deaths to innocent people.

I hope they give him a long jail sentence. Civil lawsuits don't seem to be an effective deterrent. You break into someone's home, attack and seriously injure them, you go to jail. Just like every other criminal. I'm tired of these people getting off with a slap on the wrist just because someone is afraid to get them riled up or interfere with their "rights". They need to be off the streets where they can't harm others.

BBM. I meant Mr. Pelosi filing lawsuits against those, such as Elon Musk, who falsely accused Mr. Pelosi of being friends with the vicious attacker.

I hope DD will have to serve his entire sentence.

Elon Musk on Sunday gave credence to a fringe conspiracy theory about the violent attack on Paul Pelosi.

The new Twitter owner tweeted a link to an article full of baseless claims about Pelosi. The article was posted on a website that purports to be a news outlet. Musk, who has 112 million followers on the platform he now owns, posted the baseless story about Pelosi in response to a tweet from Hilary Clinton at 8:15 am ET. He later deleted the tweet around 2 pm, but not before racking up more than 28,000 retweets and 100,000 likes.

I agree.

Oh, absolutely, Pelosi should file suit against evil nuts like Elon Musk. I doubt he will, though, because those folks tend to like and respect other wealthy people. I would, though.

I would, too. Hate Speech is vile as a Judge recently made very clear to Musk.

One of the group's findings, published in June, detailed how "racist, homophobic, neo-Nazi, antisemitic or conspiracy content" from paid users went unmoderated on the site.
