Missing Southern California man’s car found in Yolo County

Yolo County authorities are asking for help locating a Southern California man whose vehicle was found at a county park and whose last contact with family was nearly a week ago.

Rico Omarr Harris, 37, of Alhambra, was believed to have been driving from his mother’s Los Angeles County home to his girlfriend’s residence in Seattle, authorities said. He reportedly began the drive around 1 a.m. Friday, Oct. 10, his mother told Yolo County officials. That morning, he spoke with his mother at 9:45 a.m. as he passed through Sacramento and left a voice-mail with his girlfriend at 10:45 a.m., according to the Yolo County Sheriff’s Office.

The black Nissan sedan he was driving was found Monday at Yolo County’s Cache Creek Regional Park on State Route 16 near Rumsey by a deputy. When the deputy saw the vehicle in the same spot the next day, the deputy began a welfare check.

The department initiated a ground search of the area Tuesday and searched more extensively Wednesday with no success.

Then at 10:45 a.m. Friday, he left a message on his girlfriend's phone, saying he was OK and planned to get a meal and take a nap, KTLA reported. He hasn't been seen or heard from since...

Deputies have used all-terrain vehicles and an airplane in their search for the 280-pound, 6-foot, 9-inch basketball player at the park site.

The Yolo County Sheriff’s Department says there is no indication of anything criminal at this time. No leads were found from inspecting Harris’ car, as it looks like the car was just parked in the parking lot and had been left for two days...

Harris reportedly suffers from bipolar disorder.

Harris' Nissan was found by a deputy in Yolo County Regional Parks near Rumsey three days later, the sheriff’s department said. Investigators found his backpack and cell phone near the car.

We here in Northern California joke about Yolo county a lot, nowadays. Also, wow, he's a former Harlem Globetrotter? That's cool. I hope he's found.

Wonder why he got off the 5 to go to Cache Creek? There's a popular casino there; maybe he was going to hang out there a bit?

I was reading on Daily Mail, iirc, that he dropped off around the "Emerald Triangle" area of NoCal. Is that correct? If so, that's never good to hear . . quite a few cases on WS around that area haven't ever been resolved!

The address I find for the Cache Creek Regional Park is 1475 Hwy 16, Rumsey, CA 95679. There are two parking lots North of Rumsey before you get to the "Middle" site. I haven't been able to find out exactly which of the two "Lower" parking lots Rico's car was found.

Rural hiking to Frog Pond trail (5 mile loop), the Blue Ridge trail and over 54,000 acres of Bureau of Land management lands and trails. The trails are accessible by hiking along the rural adjacent County Road 40 which starts at the lower site entry. County Road 40 is closed to vehicles but is available for hikers, horseback, and bicycles. Potable water is NOT available and cellular phones typically do not work within the canyon parks. The "Emerald Triangle" is farther North than Yolo County. The triangle encompasses Humbolt, Trinity and Mendocino Counties. Maybe Rico was tired of driving along the 5 and wanted to make his way to the coast and drive up the 101 for awhile. If so, it would have been a beautiful drive though it would have added hours and hours to his trip up to Seattle.

Bipolar...That stood out to me. Is he on medication? Maybe he stopped taking his meds for whatever reason and is not in the best state of mind. When I hear bipolar I also tend to think of possible suicide pretty quickly...I hope he's okay and will be located soon.

Some people take the scenic route. When I go on road trips I often avoid interstates or get off them and take roads people would think were absurd. It depends on whether you're in the trip for the adventure or the destination or both.

Wonder if he was trying to find someone to jump his battery, or accepted a ride from someone? Or even if that was his backpack at all (like someone was trying to take the car, but it wouldn't start).

Edited to add: article also says he called his mom at 9:30am and said he was going through Sacramento. He was going to stop for breakfast and a nap. Wonder if he have drove to the park for his nap?

Hey, hey, you're talking about my hometown county (Davis, CA). �� There is not a lot there besides farmland, and Rumsey is way the heck away from civiliization. Cache Creek could have been his destination but I haven't been there since the casinos were built.

Ha, no offense intended - it only turned into a joke when the acronym YOLO got so popular. Bipolar + abandoned car with jumper cables and no phone call are not good signs. I hope he just had a bit of a freakout and took a bit of time to himself and is okay somewhere.
