An investigation is underway after San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department deputies found human skeletal remains in Joshua Tree National Park last week, according to a release issued by SBCSD on Monday.

The remains, which have not been identified, were reported in a remote area of the park on January 16 at 11:11 a.m. A Morongo Basin deputy responded to the location and sent photographs of the remains to a Coroner's Bureau official, who confirmed that they were human.

A hiker reported finding a partial human skeleton in Section 6, said Cindy Bachman, a spokeswoman for the county Sheriff’s Department.

Section 6 is roughly a square mile of undeveloped land east of Quail Springs Road, outside the western border of the park.

The scene was secured for the night and on Friday, Jan. 17, a helicopter crew flew homicide detectives, coroner’s investigators and crime scene investigators into the park, where they retrieved the bones.

Officials did not find any obvious signs of foul play or personal belongings nearby, SBCSD spokeswoman Jodi Miller said. There were no active searches for missing persons in the area at the time of the discovery. Investigators were uncertain how long ago the person had died or how long they had been at that location.

The partial skeleton was found just outside of federal land in the Desert View Conservation Area, which is near the town of Joshua Tree and north of Quail Springs Road, Joshua Tree National Park Superintendent David Smith said.

I found another article (posted over on the Barbara Thomas thread) which offers this interesting quote:

Jodi Miller, a San Bernardino County Sheriff's spokeswoman, declined to say where exactly in the park the remains were found. However, she described it as a remote place and said it would have been a treacherous hike to get to the location.

Hasn't this doe just been identified? Or are there two bodies found in this park?
