Police confirm that hunt for James Smith Cree Nation suspect Myles Sanderson dates back to May

New article from cbc.ca

RSBM:
"Saskatoon police confirm that they've been searching for James Smith Cree Nation suspect Myles Sanderson since May.

That's when the 30-year-old stopped meeting with his parole officer and was classified as "unlawfully at large."

Sanderson had been serving a nearly five-year federal sentence for assault, robbery, mischief and uttering threats. He made parole, and then disappeared."
That explains the "Wanted" article from May:

The last sighting of the two was last night around midnight in Regina, correct? Any idea as to why Regina?

Edited to correct midnight sighting to NOON. Thanks to @MistyWaters!

The possible sighting in Regina was shortly after noon time yesterday. It would be easier to hide out there as opposed to smaller communities.

12:07 p.m. – RCMP issues fifth update saying witnesses report seeing suspect vehicle in Regina on Arcola Ave. Residents asked to shelter in place. The vehicle is described as a black Nissan Rogue with Saskatchewan license plate 119 MPI.

Regina is a larger center and has a strong native population so it would be easier to blend in.

Did I read this correctly? They’ve been looking for them since May? Is that right? Thanks in advance.
Only Myles Sanderson. Nothing on Damien.

There are reports that one of them may be injured ….

According to the Associated Press, Doreen Lees, 89, said she and her daughter thought they saw one of the suspects in Weldon early Sunday morning.

Lees said a man approached them and said he was hurt and needed help but fled after her daughter said she would call for help.

“He wouldn’t show his face. He had a big jacket over his face. We asked his name and he kind of mumbled his name twice and we still couldn’t get it,” Lees said, according to the Associated Press. “He said his face was injured so bad he couldn’t show it.”

Another article stated the woman also said that this person was very “wobbly” on his feet.
I read this and thought it might have been a ruse to harm them (a la Ted Bundy pretending to be injured/handicapped and asking girls for assistance, etc). Whether it was a ruse or he had a legitimate injury, I’m glad the daughter didn’t invite him inside!

They made a lifesaving decision, thats for sure. Exactly what I was thinking, a ruse to gain entrance plus a ploy to keep his face hidden in case he was recognized.

Sadly it appears the majority of the other attacks occurred while the innocent, defenceless victims were still sleeping during the very early morning hours so they probably had no chance to defend themselves. Otherwise I’d be quite certain at least some of the victims had legal weapons (guns) for hunting and that’s why I think the vicious massacre was timed accordingly.

I wonder who housed MS who was on the run since May? There‘s a strong chance that’s where they‘re hiding out once again. JMO

As with the shootings 3 summers ago in Northern BC by the two young fellows who fled to Northern Manitoba, we learned that some early charges needed to be laid due to the possibility they had left the province, so a warrant could be issued that would enable them to be arrested outside of the province. I think that would be the case here as well, albeit precautionary at this point in time.

The linked article contains some new information:

  • The injured count moves from 15 to 18
  • One of the victims has been identified - Lana Head, 49 of James Smith Cree Nation
  • There is a correction to the earlier information regarding Myles Sanderson - he was NOT released on parole in May. He got a "statutory release"

Is anyone familiar with the difference between "parole" and "statutory release"?

”Saskatchewan RCMP have charged two people being sought by police and the injury toll has risen to 18 after 10 people were fatally stabbed Sunday in various locations in the province, including James Smith Cree Nation.

Police from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba are searching for Myles Sanderson, 30, and Damien Sanderson, 31, after the attacks prompted a dangerous-persons alert.

"To the people of Saskatchewan and beyond, please be assured that we are using every human, investigational and technological resource we have available to locate and arrest the persons responsible for this tragedy and to ensure your safety," said Rhonda Blackmore, commanding officer of the Saskatchewan RCMP.

Myles faces three counts of first-degree murder; Damien is charged with one count of first-degree murder.

Both men also face attempted murder and break-and-enter charges. More charges are expected as the investigation continues.….”

From Google:

Statutory release requires federally sentenced inmates to serve the final third of their sentence in the community. CSC supervises them and imposes conditions of release similar to full parole. Inmates serving life or indeterminate sentences are not eligible.

This is an informative link. In this particular case returning MS to society as a law-abiding citizen clearly was wishful thinking.

“Historically, many offenders were granted early release based on a calculation of time off for good behaviour. In 1992, the Corrections and Conditional Release Act (CCRA) replaced this with statutory release. It is a type of conditional release because the offenders are supervised in the community. Unlike day and full parole, however, it is not granted by the Parole Board of Canada (PBC).

Statutory release does not end an offender's sentence. Instead, offenders serve what is left of their sentence in the community. They must report regularly to a Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) Parole Officer and follow conditions. On statutory release, offenders have some time under supervision in the community before their sentence ends to help them return to society as law-abiding citizens.”
