CANADA CANADA - 83 Missing & Murdered women of Edmonton, Alberta

From article linked in post #360, article dated 17 June 2005 -

Along with at least eight deaths that the RCMP are calling confirmed homicides, they're also investigating the suspicious deaths of two other sex-trade workers since 1998.

The bodies of 20 women have been found in rural areas around Alberta's capital since 1983. Four were discovered in the first seven months of 2003 alone.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/alberta-rcmp-offer-100-000-reward-for-serial-killer-1.557283

In this early article, 20 women have been found and Kare is investigate 10 of them.

Article dated 19 Feb 2006 -

Investigators believe the unknown serial killer is responsible for the deaths of some of the 12 prostitutes whose bodies have been found on the outskirts of Edmonton since 1988.

... Project KARE's 50 team members, says Purvis has been a valuable asset. He joined the task force in late 2004, nearly a year after it was assembled.

In this article less than a year later, 12 have been found.

Simply questioning the number 83 in the title. There really is nothing to indicate that imo.

Thank you for sharing some of the facts out there in MSM even though they really are all over the place. I am not one for conspiracy garbage.

An article from page 3, post #45 dated 14 Aug 2012 -

Police are assuring the public that the RCMP will still have 20 officers working on the KARE team and the public will not notice a difference.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/project-kare-resources-moved-to-homicide-unit-1.1284400

So in Feb 2006, Kare reported 50 team members - dropping to 20 by 14 Aug 2012.

Wow.....I think the public noticed a difference as there have been quite a few bodies found.

A reference to the number 83 - article dated 5 March 2012. This thread was started in June 2005, so info is being repeated. While the article is primarily an interview with an RCMP Staff Sgt, I don't read the '83' as being quoted by him. The article also conflicts in the number of bodies found and when that began. We now have 30 bodies since 1975 in this article.

At the time of KARE's formation, there were 83 cases of women who had gone missing under suspicious circumstances, six of whom had met with foul play.

The evidence found in those six cases suggested the killings were committed by the same person or people.

Also,

During the height of the killings, there were more than 50 officers working with KARE, but those numbers have now dwindled to about 14 to 16 officers.

Yet in Aug 2012, Kare reports 20 officers.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/edmonton_murders/

Police in Edmonton are looking for someone whom many people are calling a serial killer, targeting women. They have released a profile of a man they believe has killed several prostitutes and have offered a $100,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.

The profile prepared by the RCMP's Behavioural Science Branch suggests he:

Drives a reliable, high-mileage truck, van or sport utility vehicle, and is comfortable driving in rural areas.
Likes to hunt, fish, camp or participate in other outdoor activities.
Has a past or present connection to the area south of Edmonton, including Leduc, Camrose and New Sarepta.
May clean his vehicle at odd times of the day.

Since 1983, the bodies of more than 20 Edmonton women have been found. All are described by police as being prostitutes or having high-risk lifestyles and only five of the cases have been solved.

Members of Project Kare – the RCMP task force investigating 83 cases of missing and murdered women living high-risk lifestyles in Alberta

If he's been doing this since 1988 I'm sure he's been through more than one vehicle.

Unfortunately the article posted by norma is no longer available - but it is the same paper that re-quotes in 2012 that what happened to 83 women is under investigation.

From page 10, post #146.

Here are 60 missing/murdered victims from Edmonton. I still have names of approx 100 victims to find details for, so they are not included here. Where a name is shown as unknown or unidentified, that is because LE has not released names/details for some reason.

I suppose if we had access to RCMP/KARE files, we'd know how they came up with the 83 cases. And as for files being "reclassified", that certainly doesn't make them any less disappeared or dead. Sorry if I'm not big on the semantics of numbers or how many might be black, white or green ... but I do care deeply about the lives of these victims, their names, faces, families, and finding who is responsible for their disappearances and deaths.

ETA: FWIW, the one male victim in the above list, Jessy Alain Lessard, was at one time a KARE file. Don't know if he still is or not.

Alberta RCMP offer $100,000 reward for serial killer

*snippet. "The person that killed the women is moving amongst the community."

Thanks for the good article, this snippet was also interesting, imo.

"Now they are referring to one or more "serial offenders," who may or may not be working together, in the hope that someone will come forward to stop the crimes."

Statistics.

"Unsolved murdered and missing

Criminal intelligence analysis of collected data will be necessary to ensure there are no previously unknown suspicious clusters of occurrences. While it is preliminary to draw any conclusions from the data, it appears that multi-agency task forces on missing or murdered women have been established in several of the highest volume areas of unsolved murdered and missing Aboriginal female incidents.

The total number of unsolved missing and murdered Aboriginal women occurrences as of the time of data collection was 225. This includes 105 cases of missing Aboriginal women categorized as "unknown" or "foul play suspected" and 120 unsolved Aboriginal female homicides. The RCMP is the police force of primary jurisdiction for about half of these cases (121), including 53 of the missing and 68 of the murdered".

Moving this list of 4 from the 1980's forward to continue on with 7 from the 1990's.

Here are the only 4 women from the 1980's that I can find anything on regarding possible investigation by Project Kare. The info has been gathered from numerous sources as not one article seems available that includes all pertinent or meaningful info - so no links.

Gail Cardinal 21 - reported missing April 1980, found 1983 10 kms south of Fort Saskatchewan AB, north of Sherwood Park area

Melodie Joy Riegel 21 - last seen 20 Sep 1986 Edmonton, found 21 Sep 1986 strangled in motel room at 10630 Kingsway Ave Edmonton (was or is called Pan American Motel)

Bernadette Ahenakew 22 - last seen Oct 1989 Edmonton. Found 24 Oct 1989 in a ditch in Sherwood Park.

7 victims from the 1990's Edmonton.

Joanne Ghostkeeper 24 - last seen mid Dec 1996 Edmonton, found 25 Dec 1996 strangled in her apartment Edmonton

Jessica Marie Cardinal 24 - unable to find a last seen date, found 14 June 1997 Edmonton - strangled in an alley behind a commercial building on 111 Ave

"The 'killing fields' of Edmonton

KATHERINE HARDING
Last updated Tuesday, Apr. 07, 2009"

"Not much has been said about whom the police think they are looking for. Officers have divulged only that they suspect he has a connection to the rural area east of Edmonton; that he likes to hunt, camp, fish or farm; that he drives an SUV or truck; and that he may clean his vehicle often or at odd hours.

The fact that many of the bodies have been left in easy-to-find places could be a telling detail about what type of person police are seeking, according to Elliott Leyton, a Newfoundland-based forensic anthropologist and expert on serial killers.

"It's just a contempt for what they are dumping, a contempt for the police and tremendous respect for themselves," he said. "That's a significant part of the kick these guys get out of this is the cockiness: the feeling that they are fooling and taunting the authorities. The whole 'Look, I did it again, you morons.' "

Snip>

"Like the police, Ms. King is desperately searching for anything to bring her closer to her daughter's killer.

She wonders why most of the dead women were petite and why many were found with few or no clothes; does that mean the killer is taking trophies?

She is also confused about why at least two of the women were burned while the majority, including Cara, were not.

According to Mr. Egger, the U.S. criminologist, that piece of information tells him the task force could be looking for at least two killers because of the different ways the bodies have been left. Project Kare has never ruled out that possibility".

Found this intriguing... " two unsolved Calgary homicides involving prostitutes in 1991 have been tied to Project Kare."

Before continuing with Edmonton missing and murdered news, want to share this o/t Alberta RCMP father with his son - a video making the rounds as 'The Dancing Mountie'. The reason for making the video is very heartwarming imo.

This guy is a true leader imo - if he can get this job done, pretty sure he can do many things. Way to go dad and what a lucky kid!
