''Madeira, who walks with a slight limp, was last seen wearing a dark or black jacket with A large white stripe on each arm, light khaki pants, white or light-colour shoes, and a baseball cap, and carrying his wallet and keys.

Michael Madeira, the missing man’s son, said he’s been stopping by his parent’s home more often over the last two weeks to visit his father as his mother was out of town spending time his sister and her family.

“I usually drop by two or three times a week, but I’d been coming by more frequently when Mom was away,” he told CP24.

The last time Michael paid his dad a visit was yesterday at around 1:30 p.m., but he wasn’t home. He came back at roughly 3 p.m., but his father was still out.

Michael said he and his family became “extremely worried” when their loved one hadn’t returned by 10 p.m. Minutes later he was on the phone with the police.

“My dad is always home by nightfall,” he said.

Madeira, who his son said may have some early onset of dementia, is described by him as a bit of “old school” Portuguese man.

He’s not one to carry a cell phone. He usually pays for things in cash. He loves walking around his community with his hands behind his back and often to hangs hanging out with friends outside Oakwood Village Library and Arts Centre at 341 Oakwood Ave.

“He always walks the same route and everyone knows him in the neighbourhood,” Michael said.

Madeira’s first language is Portuguese, but he also speaks Spanish and Italian. He can get by in English, but he’s not super comfortable speaking it, Michael noted.

Toronto police have set up a command post and are actively searching the area and beyond for Madeira.

Several family members and friends are also scouring the neighbourhood for the senior.

“We just want to do anything to get (my father) back home,” Michael said.''
Anyone with information is urged to contact police at 416-808-1300, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-8477 (TIPS) or www.222tips.com.''

''In the days since his disappearance, those who know and love Madeira have been putting up posters in neighbourhoods throughout the city’s west end and doing daily searches for him.

“We have no idea what happened to my father, but it’s getting to the point where it’s beyond concerning, especially with this heat,” said Madeira’s son, Michael, who asked people to check their yard, shed, garage, local park, and even laneway, for him.

“We’re just really trying to keep the word out. We need help to find him.”

Micheal said while his father is a strong-willed person, he’s likely afraid, confused, and disheveled after being away from home for more than a week.

Madeira may be in the early stages of dementia, his son shared. Michael said it’s possible his father may have experienced some sort of episode and became disoriented.

So far, there have been a few sightings of Madeira.

The day he went missing, he was reportedly spotted in the area of Bloor Street West and Dovercourt Road.

Over the weekend, a couple of people said they may have seen Madeira near Yorkdale Shopping Centre

Teams of volunteers, many of who are connecting through social media, are now scouring an area bounded by Lawrence to Wilson avenues and from Caledonia to Allen roads for Madeira.

Police are also working to collect any relevant video footage in an effort to track Madeira down, Michael said.

In a July 20 statement, Det. Sgt. Roger Desrochers, of 13 Division, said they’ve been searching non-stop for Madeira, who speaks Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, and a little bit of English.

“Investigators have been working around the clock following up on possible sightings of Antonio Madeira,” Desrochers told CP24.''

“We encourage the public to phone police the moment they locate a person that may appear lost or disoriented.”

Anyone with information should contact police at 416-808-1300, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-8477 (TIPS) or www.222tips.com.

People can also contact Michael Madeira directly at 647-282-8439 to report sighting of his father.''

The article upthread says "Michael Madeira, the missing man’s son, said he’s been stopping by his parent’s home more often over the last two weeks to visit his father as his mother was out of town spending time his sister and her family." Hmm, just trying to think of his possible mind-set that makes me wonder if he decided to go see his wife at her sisters - wherever her sister and family live - and got lost? Maybe they should at least check routes heading that way?

Sadly it looks like he is still missing. Where are you Antonio? I watched a youtube posted by the TPS of a neighbors camera where Antonio is walking down the street and advising others to watch his distinctive walk (slow shuffle) to help recognize him:

This afternoon outside 13 Division, Const. Laura Brabant along with the man’s son, Michael, appealed for the public’s help.

“We are appealing to all members of the community, both in Toronto and outside of Toronto, if you spot Mr. Madeira, please contact police immediately,” said Brabant, adding Det. Chris Monk from 13 Division and his team have been working “tirelessly, around the clock” to locate this missing person.

“We’re also asking, if you live in this community or in this area, if you have security surveillance or door cams/dashcam footage, check your video footage, it may be of use for us if you suspect that you see the some Mr. Madeira on your cameras.”

Michael Madeira and his family have been worried sick since their loved one disappeared.

“He’s been missing now essentially two weeks. This is unlike him,” Michael said of his father, who is known to take daily walks in the Oakwood-Vaughan area.

“This is obviously very concerning. …. There’s been a heatwave, storms.”

Michael said his father may have undiagnosed dementia and could be anywhere in the city at this point.

Like Brabant, he asked people to check their yards, garages, even around unexpected places like factories where a person could find a spot to seek shelter from the elements.

“It’s just really hard right now so we’re just waiting for all the help we can get from any where or anyone,” he said.''

''The elder Madeira was “fascinated” with construction sites, his son said, and would often make friends with the workers. Dog parks were another favourite destination.

So far, those familiar places haven’t led his family to find him, Michael Madeira said.
The senior likely only had $40 to $60 in cash when he went missing in the area of Winona Drive and Mulberry Crescent and hasn’t tried to access his bank accounts.''

''Police urged residents Monday to check their backyards, garages, sheds or anywhere someone might take shelter as well as dash cameras and other security footage that might help investigators track Madeira’s whereabouts.

Anyone who believes they see Madeira should contact the police immediately at 416-808-1300 and try to stay with the senior until officers arrive.''

Just wondering if Mr Madeira was drawn by the crowds and music in the distance and found himself lost in the High Park area? speculation, imo, fwiw..

“It seems as if, for some reason, he’s not been seen anywhere that you would think he would be,” said William Bolton, a senior trainer for Advanced Technical Training Search and Rescue which has been helping the family in the search. He says while they have scoured the local area, they still believe he has not wandered too far from where he went missing.

“The chances are he could be walking around in circles. He’s obviously lost, so we’re trying to keep it to a local proximity of just a few kilometres from his house.”

Bolton adds they plan to expand the search into the downtown area as well.

“Someone like this is going to stick out in a location where they’ve not usually been.”

Madeira is described as five feet five inches tall, 150 pounds and with a thin build. He has a tanned complexion, hazel eyes, balding short white hair, and a full white beard.''

''He was last seen possibly wearing a dark or black jacket, light khaki pants, white or light colour shoes, and a baseball hat.

The family told CityNews that Madeira used to work in construction and appealed to those working in the industry to be on the lookout for him since he would occasionally walk by local sites to see what they were working on.''

I wish Mr. Madeira's family would release a photo, if they have one, showing the big, white bushy beard. MOO I hope they find him soon.

“This past week we’re focusing on the downtown core, homeless shelters. We’re thinking maybe he’s fallen in with a group of people, and he’s just going through this state of mind where he’s not sure where he is. They’re maybe giving him water, food. So downtown would be the easiest to get all that. And walking, it’s not a ridiculous walk from where he lives (at Eglinton and Oakwood Aves.).”

“The main thing that is sticking out right now — we obviously don’t know if he has the same clothes — but one thing he probably still has is this big, white bushy beard because I doubt he would have shaved that,” said Madeira.

ETA -

I think I see his beard sticking out from under the COVID mask he's wearing in the pic posted above by @dotr. Sheez, I hadn't noticed that until I read it in the article. :)

'We haven’t found a shoe, a wallet, or a hat:' Search for elderly Toronto man Antonio Madeira approaches 3-month mark

Michael Madeira missing father

Antonio Madeira's son, Michael Madeira, holds posters of his father that have been plastered throughout Toronto since the elderly west Toronto resident went missing on July 12.

The search for Antonio Madeira is almost at the three-month mark and his family tells CP24 that they are no closer to answers than they were following his disappearance from his west-end neighbourhood in July.

Madeira, who is 76, went missing just over 10 weeks ago. He was last seen on July 12, sometime between 10:30 and 11 a.m., near Winona Drive and Mulberry Crescent in the Oakwood-Vaughan neighbourhood.

Described as five-foot-five and 150 pounds with a thin build, a tanned complexion, hazel eyes, balding short white hair, and a full white beard, Madeira wore a dark or black jacket with a distinctive large white stripe on each arm, light khaki pants, white or light-colour shoes, and a multi-coloured baseball cap. He was also seen carrying his wallet and keys.

Madeira, who speaks Portuguese and understands Spanish and Italian, but struggles with English, walks with a slight, but distinct limp, and often clasps his hands behind his back.

He is a well-known resident of the Oakwood-Vaughan neighbourhood and has called the community home for four decades.''

A number of citizen groups have also come forward to help with the search. Some organizations have even brought in special sniffer dogs, but so far no concrete information about Madeira’s whereabouts has come to light, his son said.

“The unknown is really weighing on us. It’s the worst thing in the world and it’s really hard to bear,” Michael Madeira shared. “We haven’t found a shoe, a wallet, or a hat. We’re just asking everyone to keep an eye out,” he said.''

The 76-year-old Portuguese man’s was last seen near Winona Drive and Mulberry Crescent, which is in the vicinity of Vaughan Road and Oakwood Avenue, on July 12, 2022 sometime between 10:30 and 11 a.m.

“A year to the day (since my father went missing) and we’re no closer to knowing what happened to him,” Madeira’s son, Michael, told CP24.com on Wednesday afternoon.
It’s been a year. It’s been tough.”

“We haven’t found anything. We don’t have any clues,” Michael said.

“The problem is we just don’t know where to be searching.”

Madeira’s case is now being handled by Toronto police’s Missing Persons Unit.

“We do not have anything new to share with the community in relation to this investigation, however we will be sharing his story on social media tomorrow to mark the date he was reported to police,” investigators wrote in a statement to CP24.com.

“We have also selected this case to be highlighted by the podcast 24 Shade of Blue that Antonio’s son will be partaking in.”
