A Grande Prairie man will avoid a murder trial after details of a long-expected plea deal in the January 2014 killing of 26-year-old Courtney Breanna Johnstone came before Judge J. Watson in Grande Prairie Provincial court on Wednesday.

Brian Hurley, the lawyer for Shane Gregory Babitsch, told the court his client will plead guilty to single counts of manslaughter and indignity to human remains. He was originally charged with first-degree murder, criminal negligence causing death and indignity to human remains.

Babitsch will be sentenced on Feb. 3, 2016. In the interim, a pre-sentence report will be completed.

Here's a story done on area where Courtney was murdered. It focuses on a couple of other cases as well.

Inside Grande Prairie: Horror and Hope in Canada’s Violent Crime Capital

When Courtney Johnstone went missing, Walter White learned about it the same way almost everyone else did: from the news. He listened to the police announcement of Courtney's disappearance and he continued to follow the news of their investigation. He heard when the police, looking for her body, sifted through trash at the landfill in Grande Prairie, Alberta—a city with the dubious distinction of being the violent crime capital of Canada.

White, who is Métis-Cree, had never met Courtney, and he never would. And yet, on a February day in 2014, something compelled him to show up unannounced at the landfill to ask investigators a favour: when they found Courtney's remains, could he please say a prayer, sing a song, help guide her to a better place?

"I couldn't imagine her spirit staying in that spot," White told VICE recently. "That unimaginable thought of a human being being treated in that manner, it was just appalling... She needed that dignity, that release, that compassion."

Shane Gregory Babitsch has been sentenced to nearly five years incarceration for the January 2014 killing of Courtney Breanna Johnstone.

Judge J. Watson imposed a complete sentence of six years: five years for manslaughter and one year for indignity to human remains. With credit for time served, the sentence amounts to four years, 10 and-a-half months.

That hardly seems like enough time for taking someone's life..

5 + 1 years? You gotta be kidding me! With time served he's out in 4 years. smh
