Police used a new & somewhat controversial “DNA dragnet” technique, after collecting DNA at the crime scene that indicated a suspect of Middle Eastern descent. (He is a Syrian refugee who entered Canada 3 months before murder).
Trial began on 3/17/23 with jury selection & ended on 3/23/23.

Jurors in a B.C. courtroom heard Tuesday from a doctor who took part in the autopsy of a teen girl murdered nearly six years ago.

Dr. Stephen Yip, a neuropathologist, took the stand for the first time, where he described examining the victim’s brain during the autopsy.

But he testified that during a subsequent examination two weeks later he was able to conclude the injury to her brain was consistent with hypoxic ischemia — the result of a lack of blood flow and oxygen.

The jury heard that the girl was likely still alive, but unconscious for between 30 minutes to an hour after the blood flow was cut off.

However, Yip testified he was not able to say exactly what the victim’s cause of death was.

Constable Ian Archie Robertson, who was with Coquitlam RCMP at the time of the victim's death. He said he was asked to assist with the crime scene in the morning of July 19. Trial continues on Wednesday, 5/10/23.
5/10/23 Wednesday, Trial Day 9: Crown witness: RCMP Sgt. Michael Urmson. As acting sergeant with Burnaby RCMP’s serious crime unit on July 19, 2017, it was Urmson’s role to decide whether the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team should be called in.

A B.C. jury saw disturbing crime scene photographs Wednesday, as lawyers for the man accused of murdering a teenaged girl raised questions about a homeless man seen in the area.

Coquitlam RCMP Const. Ian Robertson took the stand Wednesday, where defence counsel Kevin McCullough pressed him about the identity of a homeless man who spoke with police in Burnaby’s Central Park, near where the teen’s body was found.

The court also heard from RCMP Sgt. Michael Urmson, who told the jury the victim was found with her shirt pulled up and her breast exposed, and her shorts and underwear tangled to one side.

Jurors also heard from forensic identification specialist Cpl. Dominic Toa, who testified there were injuries on the girl’s knees and ring fingers. He told the court that a forensic light source detected no fluids, which would have glowed if saliva or semen were present.

"Ali’s lawyer Kevin McCullough asked Urmson if he ever considered if there could have been consensual sexual activity. He said he had not."

So it seems the defense is going to be that the sex was consensual but it could have been the random homeless man who did the actual killing?

The defendants DNA being found inside the victim and the way in which the body was left is very damming and solely points to the accused.

Jurors faced another heavy day in court, as prosecutors led them through more graphic photos of the scene where a B.C. teen girl was found murdered in a Burnaby park nearly six years ago.

On Thursday, Crown prosecutors played some of the last images of the teen alive, recorded at summer school on the morning of July 18, 2017.

Crown led the jury through police photographs of the crime scene, depicting her pink wallet and a cell phone found in the forest.

B.C. Supreme Court Justice Lance Bernard approved the release of the photos, which were taken on July 19, 2017, in the hours after the teen's body was found in Burnaby's Central Park.

Forensic identification specialist Dominic Toa testified that he took more than 300 photos of the crime scene that night.

During cross-examination, he said there were no clear signs of footprints or drag marks on the forest floor surrounding the body.

The forensic pathologist who performed the autopsy on a 13-year-old girl found dead in Burnaby’s Central Park in July 2017 testified in the first-degree murder trial of Ibrahim Ali on Monday.


Dr. Jason Morin told the jury he began by examining the victim's clothing.

While examining the body, Morin described finding evidence of an injury common in strangulation cases.

“They’re called petechial hemorrhages, which is a fancy medical term for a small pinpoint hemorrhage. So, that was on skin of the face, underneath the chin as well as in the eyes,” he said.

The forensic pathologist was asked if he had determined a cause of death during the autopsy. He said the victim died of strangulation, adding “there had been some sort of compression on the neck.”

''Penetrative blunt force' caused injuries​

“Do you have an opinion on whether the vaginal injury would have caused pain?” Crown prosecutor Isobel Keeley asked Morin, after taking him and the jury through a series of autopsy photos while the pathologist explained tears and blood he found.

Before Morin could answer, defence lawyer Ben Lynskey raised an objection, saying vaginal pain was not an area the doctor was qualified to give evidence about.

“I’m making an assumption that I don’t think the doctor has a vagina,” Lynskey said.''
Keeley reframed her questions.

Morin’s testimony Tuesday included more details about injuries to the victim’s vagina, anus and rectum, which he said were likely caused by a “penetrative blunt force.”

A “moderately large” bruise to the inside of the rectum was the most serious, according to Morin.

‘It’s not something that could be done accidentally’''​

''Because there were no obvious injuries to the girl’s neck, Morin said he couldn’t say whether she had been strangled by someone’s hands or a ligature of some kind.

To cause death, Morin said a person wouldn’t have to “squeeze as hard as possible” but apply a “moderately consistent, sustained pressure” to the neck.''

''Morin said it takes about 10 to 20 seconds for a person being strangled to lose consciousness and two to five minutes to reach a point of no return after which medical intervention won’t save them.''
