Cat predicts patient's deaths

What a neat story!!! I sure hope the residents are unaware though...could you imagine if you knew and Oscar came up and nuzzled up next to you??? It is nice they are not dying alone :) Animals are so comforting.
I thought I read, at the time he comes to their side, they are most likely not aware he is there :)

That almost made me cry. Thanks for the post Flowerchild. Every animal I've belonged to has been amazing. My kids always laugh because strays always end up on my front door. In the last year 3 dogs and 1 cat has been waiting for my door to open. I never chase them away. Happily, they have all been reuinted with their owners. LOL...one dog came back a month later!

I think it is wonderful those people didn't have to die alone. If it takes an intuitive cat to make it happen...so be it! The people were given one last chance for love and goodbyes in life. What a great story!

Ditto what SS said.
What a blessing that this cat stays with the dying until the end. I think this story is lovely.

I was so touched by all your critter stories. I have a lot of 'em myself...too many to relate right now, but plenty to ensure it's just true animals have such special gifts for us.

That lovely cat is doing such a great service to the dying. Hope the friends and relatives of those folks realize this. I remember the hospice nurse actually doing something similar for us about my mom. She came in and showed us the "signs" of her imminent death. I'd much rather the cat had been there instead. Just my preference. Would have been more...natural. There was a cat and dog living in that place as well. They wandered in and out of the rooms and I just loved it. The patients did too.

I believe it's been proven just having a pet around lowers blood pressure and gives one a sense of calm. How can that be anything but beneficial!!!

Some pets are quite smart in adapting from being around you. I have a black lab mix that is crated during the day and evening. She knows that when I start cooking, that she needs to get into the cage and can be found in there before I tell her. I recently got a yellow lab puppy as a playmate for her. When the yellow lab is in the cage, the black one will sit outside the cage to help the yellow one from barking. I didn't train the black lab, I adopted her from someone that had in turn was holding her for adoption. Whoever trained her, I thank them everytime she act more than just another dog.

Our animal companions can do so many things for us - protect us in ways we don't even fathom, love us in times when we seem unlovable, guide us when we cannot see, hold us up when we cannot stand, hear what we cannot hear, lie beside us in our darkest hour. Some of the worst humans can be redeemed by the love of a pet, and some humans have forfeited forever their right to ever know the blessings of an animal's love again....and yet, our pet's capacity for forgiveness is so great, one would still try to love them.

Sometimes I wonder at the marvelous and mysterious bond we are allowed to have with creatures who are obviously wise in ways we cannot begin to understand or appreciate and who show us the real meaning of an unconditional love we can only pathetically aspire to in our finest moments. What do they see, I wonder, when they gaze into our eyes? Perhaps they see into our hearts, and touch our souls with theirs, theirs so pure and untainted and sure of their place in this life and the hereafter. Perhaps they are our earthly window, just a hint of what we can expect heaven's perfect love to be? I only know that they can look inside us and love fractured spirits whole again, if we only let them.

I believe some of the finest most perfect angels who walk among us have 4 legs, and fur.
Remember that an angel on four legs bearing a furry pocket full of miracles may someday come to your door ...and rely on the kindness of strangers.

Wow, that is beautiful. It made me cry.

That is exactly how we got our Dusty kitty. She came to us in our darkest hour, and she has shown us unconditional love and unlimited affection.

I caught a clip of what I thought was the Tonite show. The host made a comment about this story. Something to the effect of "maybe it never occurred to anybody that those people could all be allergic to cats".

I'm equally sure it DID occur to somebody. MANY nursing homes, care centers and hospice's have pets on premise. I am sure that is relayed to prospective residents and their families. It isn't like the pets are "on" the residents every second - one cat - 100+ residents. Perhaps, like where my own Grandmother lived in her last 3 years, they have "pet-free zones" where the resident critters are not allowed. Some residents should not be allowed around the animals as they are not in their right mind - pet-free areas are a solution that protects both the pets and the allergic residents.

And in this case, I doubt it has much relevance - the people Oscar lies next to are (as the story says) 4 hours (or less) away from death. These people are in a comatose type state, body functions shutting down - Allergies are really not an issue at that point - but the presence and comfort of Oscar MIGHT be (IMO, IS) a real comfort. IMO, Oscar is communicating peace and serenity on a level beyond that of the conscious mind.

My Opinion, Really

I heard a report that Oscar is heading to a bed in Cuba.
Here Kitty, Kitty!

My cat, Rose would never be like Oscar. I don't want to say that Rose is cruel, but if I were dying, she would be playing with the plug, trying to disconnect it.
She's one of a kind! And still I love her.

I loooove this story! What an awesome kitty! How beautiful of him to snuggle up to these people in their last hours. It is an awesome gift.

Animals really do read a lot more than we give them credit for, even the non-trained ones. A few months after we rescued our Malamute, my husband had been having really bad blood pressure problems and they had been changing his medications on him trying to find the right combination, they made him very dizzy. One day, he decided to take a bath and turn on the jets because he had fallen the day before and his muscle hurt. Well, when he went to get up, he slipped in the tub and fell because he was so dizzy!
Three of my dogs were in the bathroom and all started barking at him (my shepherd mix was barking but was barking from the carpet in the bedroom, she's terrified of tile...)The malamute jumped in with his front paws and started licking my husbands face and he grabbed a hold of his collar and Frank eased back out while my husband kept hold on his collar. When he got out, and laid on the bathroom floor for a few minutes my dogs kept licking his face (so much for that bath!) cause they were obviously worried and my shep just kept barking from the carpet....she couldn't get over her fear of that darn tile to come to the rescue! LOL! She slipped bad once as a puppy and has had a fear of slippery places ever since!
When I have kidney stones, my cat daisy kneads my side....I'd appreciate it more if she didn't have claws!

What a beautiful and faithful dog!

I like your cat...she sounds like quite a character! :)

This is so sweet. I hope the family members are grateful for the few hours this cat gives them with loved ones.

We once had a cat named Oscar, and he had a prickly temperament too. That's why we named him Oscar- after the Sesame Street character, Oscar the Grouch.

What a beautiful thread! Great sentiments, FlowerChild. Animals sense things we don't - that's a fact.

Our cat Maxine was always very stand-offish and kind of bitchy. We loved her desperately. All of the sudden, she started coming into bed with my husband and I at night and sleeping between us - something she had never ever done before in her years of life.

We found out not soon after that she was dying - she had a blockage in her abdomen. She slept like that with us every night before we finally made the decision to put her down.

I feel like she knew her time was limited and she really wanted to be close to her peeps. She was a terrific cat!

I agree with everything you said. I wish I had the youtube clip of the comment made by the comedian. It was supposed to be funny... and it did get a laugh. I love that the nursing homes allow pets, for those not allergic. It has a calming effect on the patients.

Cat predicts 50 deaths in RI nursing home

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/new...at-predicts-50-deaths-in-RI-nursing-home.html

The cat, now five and generally unsociable, was adopted as a kitten at the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre in Providence, Rhode Island, which specialises in caring for people with severe dementia.

If kept outside the room of a dying patient, Oscar will scratch on the door trying to get in.

Oscar the death cat goes to Hollywood

<TIME datetime="2010-08-23T13:47BST" pubdate>Monday 23 August 2010

Where some see the grim reaper, others are visited by Oscar the cat. Now, it appears, the feline emissary who comforts the sick and the dying at a US nursing home is to be the subject of a major Hollywood movie. The casting of Oscar has yet to be announced.

Variety reports that screenwriters Stephen Lindsey and Luis Ugaz have adapted Dr David Dosa's bestselling memoir Making Rounds With Oscar: The Extraordinary Gift of an Ordinary Cat for the big screen. The plot will chart the life-and-death dramas at the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Providence, Rhode Island, where the off-screen Oscar is still in residence.

My DH has been sick with repeated bouts of prostitis for the last 2 years. He is not one to complain and I have to drill him on how he is feeling and if we need to go to the hospital. I have learned to watch our black lab, Serra because she sits on his feet whether in bed or a chair and will not leave his side. After getting treatment for a few days, we come home and normally she jumps up and gives us a kiss...but for some reason when coming home from the hospital she greats us but never jumps up on him and is very protective of him. It's eerie...but true...at least IMO

If they knew some of them might die of fright. OMG the cat is here, I'm dying!
