About this Case:

The victim was located on September 10, 1981 in a wooded area near Clear Creek in northern Chaffee County. In 1986 more bones were found in the same general area which were compared to the ones from 1981 and ruled to probably be the same person in each finding by the original pathologist. There were three cartridge shell casings found near the second set of bones. Anyone with information regarding this case is encouraged to contact the Chaffee County Sheriff's Office.

Does anyone think this man is a good candidate?

Stephen Lee Murphy

He was just added this week to NamUs. His daughter will try to put her DNA into CODIS which also has John Doe's DNA. Murphy was 19 which puts him at the high end of the age range. He disappeared in 1976, 5 years prior, which is the PMI for the John Doe. The height (5'2"-5'7") and weight (130-180 pounds) for Murphy vary greatly, but it still makes him a suitable candidate.

I think it's worth sending it to see if it matches John Doe or not.

Stephen's daughter said in his WS thread that her dad served in the Army from June 1975 until being discharged in February 1984 for being AWOL (missing in action/unauthorized absence) and misconduct. So the chances of him being this John Doe is probably 0.

@Caring1 Hey could you post the current list of NamUs exclusions for this John Doe? I would greatly appreciate it.

Actually, a user got a hold of Stephen's service record. His last date of existence was November 1, 1976 and then he was officially designated a deserter from the army on November 22, 1976. So he's still a candidate for JD.

OK - OK- Stephen Lee Murphy, LKA sometime in 1976, not reported missing until July 2022.
