Trial of Mark Redwine in death of son, Dylan, begins
Redwine’s public defender, John Moran, argued during opening statements that Dylan, who did not want to visit his father, ran away from home, and suggested he may have been attacked by a bear or a mountain lion, pointing to what he said was a tooth mark on Dylan’s skull. Moran dismissed that motive as made up by “Facebook vigilantes,” and argued that text messages show Dylan had previously confronted his father about the photographs during a cross-country trip without suffering any harm. The photographs “come from deep within Mark’s private life,” Moran said. Prosecutors won’t be able to prove a connection between Dylan’s death and the photographs, he said. “If the prosecution could find an expert to say people who do that are more likely to kill their child, that information would be given to you,” Moran said, suggesting that no such evidence would be presented.
Johnson said investigators found traces of blood belonging to Dylan in Redwine’s living room, and that a cadaver sniffing dog alerted to the smell of human remains in the back of Redwine’s pickup truck and on the father’s clothing. Johnson also pointed out that Dylan’s body was found without any identifying items, without his wallet or his backpack, which he said does not fit with the theory that Dylan ran away from home. “An animal would have no interest in taking that,” Johnson said. “A stranger would have no interest.” Johnson described a moment on the first night of the search for Dylan when rescue crews were stationed outside Redwine’s house, combing the nearby woods late into the night looking for the boy. At about 11 p.m., all the lights in Redwine’s house went out, Johnson said. “At a time when most people would have been out in the woods with a flashlight, a time when most people would know to leave the light on in case a child was lost in the woods…At 11 p.m., the defendant’s house went dark,” Johnson said. “Dylan was gone.”
