CO - Kara Nichols, 19, Colorado Springs, 9 Oct 2012, found deceased 2022 *arrest*

[…]

During prosecution redirect, Kelly stated that, if law enforcement had just found Nichols' body with no context, he still probably would have ruled her death a homicide, but may not have come to the conclusion that strangulation was the cause of death.

Kelly's testimony was the last of the day on Tuesday, with prosecutor Christina Perroni informing Judge William Bain she would be unlikely to call any additional witnesses on Thursday morning, when Hollendorfer's trial will resume.

Bain indicated closing arguments probably will be given by attorneys on Thursday morning, and that the 12-person jury will begin deliberations shortly after.

Hollendorfer faces two charges of allegedly killing Nichols: first-degree murder and tampering with physical evidence. If convicted of the first-degree murder charge, Hollendorfer will be sentenced to life in prison.

The Jury began deliberations around Noon 12:00 p.m. MST today so we are on Verdict Watch.

Cant find any outlets reporting about it other than Court TV, no tweets to link.

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) - An El Paso County jury found the Colorado Springs man accused of killing 19-year-old Kara Nichols guilty of manslaughter.

Joel Hollendorfer was originally charged with second-degree murder before the 4th Judicial District Attorney's Office upgraded his charge to first-degree murder in February 2022.

His conviction was handed down Thursday after the jury deliberated for a few hours. Hollendorfer will be sentenced at a later date.

Nichols' family is set to hold a press conference to discuss the verdict.

This is a developing story.

I really believe this 'man' will kill again. He is a career criminal. If Kara was his first victim (which I highly doubt) he escalated. I wouldn't be surprised at all if there were other victims or close calls. I don't understand why he got manslaughter! Anybody know what his record is? I'm 100% he will hurt another woman. This hurts my heart. No matter what, Kara didn't deserve that. No, no justice for Kara. It makes me sick thinking about it.

“She was a best friend. She was a sister. She was someone’s daughter… and she deserves the same life we all deserve,” said Autumn Hopfe, one of Nichols’ best friends.

“She made an impact in my life in only one or two times that I was able to meet her. She was so beautiful and so kind,” one community member said.

“In 2012, when she went missing, I thought that she maybe just didn’t want to talk to anybody. I would call her phone relentlessly… I always really wanted to believe that she would get to come home someday and we would get to see her again… I definitely didn’t think that she was in Black Forest this whole time,” said one of Nichols’ friends Erin Wyrick.

“First she’s found, then you grieve because we know she’s not with us anymore. Then we hope for justice, and then justice is not adequately served,” said Wyrick.

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- Justice finally came for family and friends of an El Paso County teen strangled to death by a man now convicted of reckless manslaughter. However, her family says it's not enough.

Inside an El Paso County courtroom Thursday, District Judge William Bain sentenced Joel Hollendorfer to 24 years in prison, including the time he's already served, for the killing of Kara Nichols in October 2012. She was 19 when she died.

After a two-week trial in June, an El Paso County jury found him guilty of manslaughter; however, he was acquitted on charges of 1st and 2nd-degree murder.

Judge Bain found that Hollendorfer was a "habitual criminal" during a court trial in July. Determining that allowed Hollendorfer to be sentenced at three times the maximum sentence for the manslaughter charge. The mandatory sentence for manslaughter is only six years.

Judge Bain, along with multiple detectives with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, and Nichols' friends and family expressed the vast amount of hurt and anguish that Hollendorfer's actions have caused them.

Nichols' family and friends said they will be at every single parole hearing in Hollendorfer's future. They stated their opposition to him ever being offered early release on a sentence that Judge Bain stated was "not commiserate to the pain in the courtroom."
